Dexter

edited July 2007 in Everything Else
Half way through the latest AWO episode, Clarissa and Daryl mentioned a show called Dexter. They both seemed to really like it, so I decided to check it out. Being incredibly lazy, and lacking Showtime (the channel which broadcasts the show), I decided to just watch it on Google Videos. My goodness, it was awesome. It's about a serial killer who kills serial killers. He claims to lack emotions and is fucking insane, although he is portrayed as a calm, charming man. He reminds me of Light, in a way, except for more bad ass. Sometimes, like Light, he allows his emotions (even though he claims to have none) to get the better of him. But, unlike Light, he usually takes care of things, and always covers his tracks. The show is based loosely on a novel written by Jeff Lindsay, called Darkly Dreaming Dexter. After seeing the first episode of the show, I really wanna pick up the book.

Anyway, I was wondering if the rest of the series was as good as the beginning, or better. There are only twelve episodes out so far, and the first season is already on DVD. Should I buy it?

  • My friend was telling me about this... I keep meaning to look it up... Maybe I really will now.
  • Wow, that IS really similar to MPD Psycho.
  • Great show...can't wait until season 2 starts.
  • As sick as it sounds, I feel a connection with Dexter and I somehow can relate to his inability to understand the attachment to others that people feel.
  • It's about a serial killer who kills serial killers.
Do his nanomachines activate to 40, 60, and 100 percent?
  • My wife and I watched the first episode of this and it was quite good. Missed episode two and since I have to watch things in order, I decided to wait for dvd. If I recall, he is not only a serial killer who kills serial killers, but also a crime scene forensics guy too. CSI gone bad.

I'll be adding this to my netflix queue right now....

Yeah, he's a blood spatter specialist, I believe. I just got the book the series is based on from my local library. I haven't read it yet, though.
  • Excellent series, it just started here in the UK but i couldn't wait and used veoh to watch all the episodes. Really great show that kept me guessing on what will happen next till the end.
  • I know I'm reviving a dead post, but I'm bored and I can't find anything interesting to say about other topics.
I just finished the first season of Dexter, and it was great. The main actor, Miachael C. Hall was awesome, his delivery of Dexter was great, likable in front of others while still having his very very dark side, it's fun when you're watching a show and you are rooting for the killer to not get caught. While some of the side stories were blah the pacing of the show was great, answers were given in almost every episode and the final big "revelation" was delivered perfect without unnecessary foreshadowing. Looking forward to the new season, I believe the first two episodes are online already.

  • I watched this on the forums recommendation and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how they're going to do the second season however. I think the first (mini)season was a solid, complete storyline and I'm not sure they'll be able to create the same sense of mystery and "revelation" as the first season. I'm hopeful though so we'll see.

Watch the pre-air videos, season 1 left a lot of things unresolved.

  • My friend convinced me to watch this series. Fortunately, both season 1 & 2 are on Instant Netflix. This series is so creepy, but I can't help but watch. Just hearing the thoughts going through Dexter's head is intriguing. As others have stated, it's fascinating that part of me relates to his detachment to people and emotions and his thoughts of it. I enjoy getting into new series to where I don't have to wait to watch the next episode.
  • I used to sub this in Finnish a few months back. I really liked the series, but haven't watched it after I left the subbing group.
  • Whoa, the latest episode (S04E09), "Hungry Man", was pretty difficult to handle.

Yeah, when Arthur called his wife a (naughty latin word), my stomach turned in a way that hasn't happened since Hank Kingsley called Larry Sanders' wife the same thing.

    Also, the finger breaking.
  • I watch it and love it, although lacking Showtime, we get it off of PirateBay. :D
  • I haven't started season 4 yet, however I really enjoyed season 3 because of Jimmy Smits. It will be interesting to see Dexter with babby.
  • All I can say about Season 4 is that John Lithgow is great at playing a creepy guy.

John Lithgow? I did not know he's the new star this season. Now, I'm really intrigued. If it wasn't for the fact that I need to finish watching Red Dwarf before it ends on Netflix Streaming, I would totally watch Dexter all weekend.
  • I'm currently half-way through season 3 and am absolutely adoring this show. Is it wrong that after the first few episodes, the show didn't really get to me any more? At the beginning, I was thinking that a lot of it was severely fucked up, but that feeling definitely went away.
  • I just finished season 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope to buy season 2 on DVD today.
  • I'm a huge fan, but I still feel that the show peaked at the end of season 2.
  • The end of the latest episode was simply awesome.

Have you seen any of this season?
  • Ouch, way to crush hope.

Shocker of a season finale. So many plot lines to go with. 9 more months until next season and excellent acting by John Lithgow.

  • Season 3 ended? Oh shi-! I need to DL me some of that.
  • My brother was very dissapointed with the end of this season. He was hoping for a shocker, and it was. However, he is fearing that Dexter will go back to his old ways during the whole next season and just getting (if someone can get better after what happened to him) by the end of next season.
He told me that it looks like Dexter jumped the shark on the season finale, but what do I know I don't really watch the show.

    Season 4 ended, even.
  • As long as Season 5 doesn't tread on any of the books' storylines I think it'll be at least interesting. So help me god though, if he starts training Cody and Astor in the Harry-Code? I'm out. (Does this forum have a spoiler hover-over tag or the like?)
