  • Practically zero laptops have "good" LCD screens, so don't feel bad. =P They use more power.
My experiences mirror SniperDragon's. Alas, poor laptop monitors. I guess I'll trade it for more batteries.
  • Am I the only one who thought the filler text was awesome?
  • I very much like the logos behind the podcasts of that day - which, by the way, look badass in iTunes.
  • Am I the only one who thought the filler text was awesome?

Yeah, I noticed that.  It was pretty great.

The site looks fine, totally functional, but pretty bland.  Would totally work, though.

Minimalist is good. I'd be interested to see if the site would be readable with a text-only browser.

Hidden images are also good. I thought you did it intentionally. :)

The colors are fine. The internet has too many colors, dangnabbit! *waves cane*

The Internet, left to its own devices, always seems to become a sea of animated GIFS and autoplaying low-res music files... (I blame the brain-eating undead, personally.) If I ever come by the site and see this:

    My eyes!!! <img class=" style="border: 0px;" />

...I'll know that those bastards have finally won, and that the ends times will soon be upon us. :)

  • I'm having the same problem viewing the background images as other people are. I am running my laptop ( IBM Thinkpad T42 ) with an extra CRT attached. On the LCD I can barely see the images unless I change the brightness and contrast to a point where the rest of the screen looks far too dark. On the CRT Dell monitor I can see the image slightly better, but it still isn't that great. If you changed the shade of the background images to a dark/navy blue while maintaining the faded/transparent look It might work better, plus the page needs a little colour (or color, depending on where you are)

I just had a horrible flashback of the internet in 1997 and geocities...
  • I have three monitors on my desk. One Digital high-end color balanced beauty and the background looked awesome. The laptop monitor also looked fine (Dell Latitude with a bad light-leak).

My third cheap-o monitor that I can't get color balanced and seems to have a stupid blue hue that I can't get rid of for the life of me is not registering the background images. I use this for email and the contrast and brightness are way to high because all I use it for is text.

Frankly I think that the site design requires bare minimum in hardware and a certain knowledge for accurate color balancing works well for a slightly snotty geek site such as this.

I like the design but please make the grey a bit more distinguishable from the white. Some of us are using cheap LCDs which makes the background distractingly obscure.
Another thing you might want to do with colour (tones) is match the colour of sections that have things to do with each other. In this instance use the same set of colours to do "Navigation" and "Subscribe now!" then another set for the "Mon,Tue,etc.." menu (not in picture yet) and each episode of the week.

Just a hint. Take it or leave it.

You should have done the site up all web 0.0.01. for April fools. Either that or list the feed in opposite order.

  • Alright babies. You can't jump this high. Take this on for size. Keep the suggestions coming. If you see anything weird in your browser, make sure to take a screenshot, so I can see what's going wrong.

Awesome. I can definitely see the images more clearly now. Not sure if it was just your screeshot or not.

By the by, I'm on a shitty laptop monitor.

Worked fine for me even in 800x600. HAhaha.

I did change the color slightly. Also, let me know if the text is hard to read.

I liked it better lighter. With the darker color, it's harder to read on my nice monitor, but the background pictures look better on the cheap monitor.

I'd take easy to read on all monitors over easy to see pictures on all monitors.
  • At least as far as the Tuesday graphic is concerned, we'll be modifying it to ensure that it is proportionally the same size as the other three.
  • It looks beautiful Scott. =)

I'm looking forward to the change. But instead of the Geeknights logo, I think you should use a video of the paka-paka sequence.

    You mean the Wednesday?
  • You mean the Wednesday?
    Yes.
  • I think the Wednesday looks best actually - if the others were smaller, I think it'd be easier on the eyes.
  • I can see the background graphics much better this time, but I would make the following recommendations:

    1) The gray looks a little too much like the default gray of an empty HTML page.It would look much better in a darker blue, and that would also better correspond with the watermarks.
    2) The headers on each of the boxes (Search, About, Poll, etc.) should be a darker-colored box.
    3) If there's any way to easily round the box corners, that would look much better.

Otherwise, I fucking adore the new GN logo with the little man triumphantly raising his mic. The lack of clutter is also the win.

I almost feel guilty posting this. Design by committee is kind of a pain in the ass, especially when you get conflicting requests from people. In the end, if you're happy, Scrym, we'll be happy.
  • Once we go live with all of this, we'll be talking a lot about our artist, who is fairly awesome.  He designed all of the new logos.
  • The background graphics look way better this time around. I think this is a keeper. The new logo is excellent as well. The mic man is a great thing itself.
  • Okay, now that I can actually see the graphics in the background.  Seems fine to me.
I asked my friend who's sitting next to me (doesn't listen to Geeknights) for a second opinion, and he didn't really like it.  He said the layout and the colors were a little awkward.
  • It looks great but I think the one thing that keeps throwing me off is the top bar. Then I thought, "Self, could it be Safari?" So I opened it in Firefox, and all was good and my eyes no longer tried to hurt themselves. I'm not sure if the Safari population is large enough to bother with, but chances are if it's happening in Safari it's happening in other browsers, and it looks really off. (I don't have the Safari 3 beta to try that out in)

Yeah, I've seen that problem before. I fixed it for IE6, IE7, Firefox and Opera on Linux and Windows. I guess that Mac will come in handy for some Safari debugging. Every other browser can go fuck itself.

Wait... you mean there are browsers other than Firefox!?

    None that matter.
    I say, while using Safari...

I dig the boxy separations...makes everything a bit cleaner in my opinion. The logos are sweet too now that I can see them but I find them a bit distracting. The watermark idea is cool in concept but in practice it doesn't really work for me. IMHO they'd look better on their own off to the left or right side of their respective boxes where they could be a full on dark color and thus enjoyed in their full awesomeness.

The logo's also beg to be part of a nice "toolbar" of links so if you want to see the archive for all the Wednesday show's you click the logo/icon of the nifty anime guy. :D
