  • I think you mean George McGovern there. McCarthy never got to a general election.
What? You don't remember the"Clean-for-Gene"?campaign? He ran in a general election in '68, '72, '76, '88, and '92. His only real shot was in '68 when the kids were so strongly supporting him
I'm not sure what you mean here. Certainly, McCarthy ran in the primary in '68, as well as '72, but he was never nominated as the Democratic nominee. It's true (and I admit, I didn't know) that he was a write-in candidate in '68 and an independent in '72, but frankly that was so small that it doesn't really seem relevant.

If you're talking about youth support fading for a once-favored candidate, I really think McGovern is your go-to example. But you do have a point, and in any case this argument is needlessly pedantic...

But . . . Obama is not the nominee either . . . yet. I think that Obama/McCarthy is the better analogy at this point than Obama/McGovern because of where they are in the campaign. Also, the youth support for McCarthy was more fervent and remarked upon at the time as more unusual in McCarthy's '68 campaign. That's why Obama '08 reminds me of McCarthy '68 at the present time.

Yeah, I guess I'm looking ahead to the future. Counting my chickens before they hatch.
