Ikariam

Ikariam. It's basically a web version of Civilization. I'm going to try it out.

  • I registered for world Zeta. I chose that one arbitrarily.
  • Ok, I am liking this.
  • Gah! I've tried to ignore this for a long time. I am playing too much browser games as is.

That, and Nexus War > any other multiplayer browser game I've seen out there.
  • I'll have to check this out later, it looks very interesting.
  • I'm in Zeta as well.
  • If only I had internet at work this would be such a great way to pass the day.

Oh, and I'm on Zeta too... somewhere.
  • One thing I miss from the days of the BBS is the turn based gaming where you only did a few things once a day. I don't have the time to sit down and play long-haul games for hours and hours at a time. I do have five or ten minutes a day I can devote to playing a game where I just enter in a few orders and the game chugs away on its own until the next day when I get my results and make more choices.

Yes, they were just computerized PBMs but they were enjoyable and did not put me in the Civ-catatonia where the world would pass me by as I trudged away with that one charioteer exploring the whole world by himself.

Like Kingdom of Loathing or Legend of the Green Dragon?

Never heard of those. I used to play Empires on some Wildcat BBS systems. Heck, I even ran one on my 1200 baud modem for a while!
  • I am also in Zeta, on Crokios(27:9)
  • I'm on Cusoios (68:91). My special resource is sulfur. We need to establish an alliance and begin trade routes.
  • I don't know about Legend of the Green Dragon, but we did have Legend of the Red Dragon. And Forum Warz is a lot like a bbs game, and it is pretty damn awesome.
  • We have wine on my island. I just upgraded my town to level 2 after getting a port, academy, and building a trade ship. This is a neat system. We'll see how it pans out.
  • I'm on Herios 91:46. I gots wine.
  • I just read up a bit on Alliances and diplomat points. It looks like you have a limited number of treaties available to you, and you can only form one after a bit of economic research. I have my full power going towards it, so we'll see how long it takes. Anyone want to volunteer and be the alliance former? I will if you all like, but it's really up to you.
  • I have stones, so I think this will work well. We all have different resources.

I'm on Zeta at Leryios [11.37] as my forum name. I have wine, by the way.

  • I think that if you are too far away from a town, you can't trade with them. I still need to validate this. Sounds like we may have factions in the forum...
  • Yeah, Me and Kiey have wine, Scott has stone, Andrew has sulfur. All we need is glass now.

So, how are we gonna decide the leader of the alliance? There is a leader, and three other management positions in the alliance. The Interior Minister handles all inside affairs and recruitment. Basically second in command. Then there are the General and the Diplomat, which rule over the armies and some of the economy of the alliance, respectively.

The only deciding factor in leader and Interior Minister is that they get resource bonuses. Does anyone care?
  • Man, I don't think I'm near anyone here! This sucks!

Anyone know how far away you can settle when you get a palace? You can settle on other islands, I'm just not sure the distance.

Edit: Looks like you can settle across the whole server. We need to make a Geeknights island group.

Don't you mean conquer the whole server?

Oops. Typo. Obviously an easy mistake to make.

It appears that you can get a palace as soon as the third research level of Seafaring. Looks like that is my next track after some economy research.

  • Is there a way to build more than one building at a time?
  • Is there a way to build more than one building at a time?
Looks like there's not. The only way to get more then one building going is to settle more towns, but that would still be one building per town.
  • So, this is basicaly Ogame/Civ?

If so, I refuse to get suckered into one of those again

I think this is made by the same people as ogame (on account of the Ikariam Plus thing looking the exact same as Ogame Commander or whatever), but I can already see that this is a huge step forward from it. Maybe I will change my opinion, but I am much happier with this than I was/am with ogame.

  • OMG. Did anyone look at the bullshit that is Ikariam Plus? Basically pay money to get ahead in the game. Nobody pay.
  • oh... now I know what this is all about
