    How is it deceptive?
It's labelled increases in spending, so even Clinton couldn't stop spending increases. The Bushes (both of them) are classic examples of deficit spending principles, the school of thought that spending money when economy is poor to help stimulate growth. McCain is a supporter of minimizing deficit spending.
You're getting a lot of people asking what "win" means. I think you should tell us, seeing as how "winning" makes you so hot to trot for McCain.
I didn't use the word "win" because I knew it would lead to this. It's not so much winning as not losing. If we leave the country now it'll likely collapse and destabilize the entire region. This sends oil prices through the roof among a lot of other bad things, but we'll feel that one the most here since we're looking at $4 a gallon for gas this summer.
I've always found it strange how people don't mind fronting the bill for awar(and risk lives) but find it outrageous to pay for social health care, in which the United States is the only first world western country who doesn't have it (as far as I know).
Our government is supposed to do very little, it's gotten out of control. Given most government programs I really doubt government healthcare would be good for anyone.

  • Iraqi Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds share power and wealth in a single state. Sectarian violence, as well as terrorism linked to Al Qaeda, are diminished but not eliminated. Overseeing all this are perhaps 30,000 to 50,000 US troops, deployed in Iraq for years, maybe decades.

That what a win would be like in Iraq.
  • I just love how they feel they have to stand up for "the rich", as if "the rich" are so oppressed and don't have anyone to speak for them.
Hey, I've got no qualms with people being filthy rich. I'm sure a small percentage of them even worked to get that way. I'm just tired of everyone jumping up and down claiming the Democrats have "socialist / communist policies against the rich" when, really, that's just how the system works.
  • BTW, if we want to talk about fiscal responsibility, most recent studies done about the cost of the Iraq war put the cost around $400 Billion dollars, or $200 million a day. That's about the GDP of Nigeria. Other estimates suggest that the war could cost up to one trillion dollars. Source.
  • That what a win would be like in Iraq.
...notice the scholarly grammar of the McCain supporter. WOOOO-HOOOOO! We gonna win in AAHHH-RAHK, boys! Fire up the monster trucks! YEEEEE-HAW!

So . . . pretty much what is was like before we went there? Maybe not the sharing so much, but more or less the same?
He doesn’t want to raise taxes to the heaves to pay for universal health care.
Sure, that'll cost a lot less than "universal health care". Just how do you propose to pay for 30K to 50K troops in Iraq for decades when, as Andrew pointed out, we're paying $200 MILLION A DAY now? Will the baby Jesus work a miracle?

    Seconded.
  • We're all throwing our vote away.

We just get to choose the direction.
    How do you figure that?
    This is a political debate.

I don't have to have substance. It just has to sound good.
  • Income tax is the only form of progressive taxation we have. Sales tax, gas tax ... this all hits the "poor" significantly harder.
Sales tax is a state tax and the Federal gas tax is less than 20 cents a gallon.
  • And where does Obama plan to fund this country? On good will and his amazing public speaking ability? I dislike Democrats cause they like to stagger the tax brackets in such a way to dick over the "rich." I'm not against paying more if I'm making more, but I think everyone should be paying into the government a good bit cause we all benefit from it.
Oooh, missed that one. Well, as far as I know Barack Obama wants to move out of Iraq. That is 200 million dollars a day less to spend there and can then be spend in the USA, for things like universal health care.
Our government is supposed to do very little
What exactly are they supposed to do btw? Sit on their asses all day passing a cigar along and chitchatting about their wives and children?
but we'll feel that one the most here since we're looking at $4 a gallon for gas this summer.
Let's see, one liter here costs at the moment 1.465 euros. One gallon is equal to 3.7843 liters and 4 dollars is equal to 2.5470 Euros. Don't you DARE whine about your cheap-ass gas prices.

A nitpick rebuttal, but I'll take it: those were simply examples, meant to illustrate what a regressive tax is. Bottom line: the income tax brackets line up as well as the can with the wealth distribution in the United States. To claim that the 10% holders of 70% of this nation's wealth are somehow being subjected to some grave sin is a fallacy.

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
The government exists to defend the union, administer justice, promote the general welfare (I interpret that is provide infrastructure).

You have to understand that for us this is a big deal. You guys have trains to move everything around, but the entire transportation system of America is setup for trucks. Increasing fuel prices means everything is gonna get expensive in a hurry.

That's not a fallacy, it's capitalist. This is why we call you commies, because this country is founded on the principle that is you work hard and make something of yourself you can be wealthy. I see a problem with punishing those that succeed in life. Again, I'm not saying staggered income tax is bad, I just want everyone to pay in a fair share since we all benefit from it. The rich don't get anything more from the far greater percent they pay.

I'm so impressed with your well thought out opinion on this point. Maybe you should go back in time to tell SCOTUS about this result you're produced out of your vast legal scholarship before they start deciding a long line of cases increasing the power of the federal government. You'll just have to go back to . . . maybe Reconstruction.
Again, I'm not saying staggered income tax is bad, I just want everyone to pay in a fair share since we all benefit from it. The rich don't get anything more from the far greater percent they pay.
Where'd they get rich? You don't think they owe something for being protected while they were becoming rich? Maybe they were using our infrastructure and out intellectual property law and things like that?

Are you rich? If not, why do you defend them? Do you think you'll ever have a chance of being rich? I can tell you right now, the odds don't favor your chances of becoming rich and the rich won't share their money with you for defending them on a forum.
. . . the entire transportation system of America is setup for trucks.

_CAN_ Of course it can also be used to pay back the debt Bush has so wonderfully managed to tenfold or so.

I am Dutch, I do not know Barack Obama's stance in detail, I however know enough to prefer him over any of the other candidates.
    promote the general welfare
Oh? So... to you helping people to get proper health care so they can get needed medication does not promote the general welfare of the US?
You have to understand that for us this is a big deal. You guys have trains to move everything around, but the entire transportation system of America is setup for trucks. Increasing fuel prices means everything is gonna get expensive in a hurry.
What prevents the US from building proper and more railroads? Do you think we don't have miles and miles of trucks driving after each other on our highways? Come on. Those 4 dollars you spoke of aren't even reality! When we already pay more than 4 dollars/gallon here.

Basically what the US needs to do is stop hogging 50 or so percent of all the oil in the world and start optimizing. Trains are faster and cheaper than trucks. What the hell happened over there anyways? Weren't guys "working on the rail road, all day and night" back in the day?

Ummmm . . . I leave in the east, where we have public transportation. I haven't paid for gasoline since November.
  • Likewise. As long as train prices stay similar, I'm cool. It's been half a year since I paid for gas.

Yes, for the record, I will be thrilled if gas prices were so high. Despite increasing prices, the US still pays less for gas than most of the world. Really, the low prices we have now are unfair. Jack 'em up I say. I want to see all those people dependent on fuel get their just desserts.
  • The rich don't get anything more from the far greater percent they pay.
Why not just instantly go all the way to let only those males who pay x amount of dollars vote? You seem to not understand that the rich are not being punished with higher taxes. Even with those higher taxes they still lead a better live than a single mother with three young children scraping by on barely enough money all because her husband prevented her from learning for a job to be able to support herself and kicked her in the face and in the dirt.

Come on dude, do you really think a grandmother with her little pension should pay the same amount of tax as some guy making 100k per month?
  • I want to see all those people dependent on fuel get their just desserts.

How dare we live in a part of the nation that doesn't have trains going all over the place.
  • Likewise. As long as train prices stay similar, I'm cool. It's been half a year since I paid for gas.
You might even see those prices coming down if there's a proper infrastructure, just because more people are using public transport.

    1. The rest of the world has higher gas prices cause they tax the ever living fuck out it. If you strip the taxes away we all pay about the same.
    2. Everyone is dependant on fuel, what do you think those trains you ride on run on? A lot of stuff in this country is shipped by Semi's (can't use the word truck it seems) and the remaining stuff is shipped by freight train. DIESEL POWERED freight trains.

He probably does. It's part of their delusion that, one day when they're just as rich as Paris Hilton, taxes are really gonna be hurting them. That's how the rich guys are able to sell them on the tax shenanigans: "Repeal the 'death tax' or you'll lose the family farm!", "Cut capital gains because one day, you might be an owner too!" If you get some talk radio types to say it long enough and loud enough, the average types start believing it. That's when they start voting republican.

Yeah. The public transportations is a pretty good idea. Then again, the red states aren't exactly known for their ideas.

Good. Tax it more. Raise taxes on everything I don't use. Especially tobacco.
    2. Everyone is dependant on fuel, what do you think those trains you ride on run on? A lot of stuff in this country is shipped by Semi's (can't use the word truck it seems) and the remaining stuff is shipped by freight train. DIESEL POWERED freight trains.
Yeah, but if it's only the trains that use fuel, demand will be much lower with supply unchanged. If we used more trains and less cars we would get the same amount of work done with less fuel. Oh yeah, also the train I take may be diesel, but most of the trains are electric trains. That means they could be nuclear trains! Actually my diesel train switches to electric when it get south enough to meet up with the third rail.

Also, the reason we got so dependent on fuel in the first place was because the prices we low. If the taxes on fuel were higher, shipping companies would have concentrated on trains or zeppelins. Because it was a better economic decision, they went with trucks. If raising the fuel prices will end the catch-22, then that's awesome.
How dare we live in a part of the nation that doesn't have trains going all over the place.
Where you live is your decision. If you choose to live someplace where there are no trains, and you don't make trains, you can't complain. You are free to move.
