What was up with Xbox-Mii thing?
I mentioned this to my friend, and he said that all they are are avatars and that avatars have been around for a while and that they are not necessarily copying Nintendo. To that, really the only response that would have sufficed was "bull shit."

  • So apparently Sony is starting up a movie/TV show download service for the PS3. The interesting part about this is that they have a deal with Bones to release their new anime Bonen No Xamdou (or Xam'd: Lost Memories) exclusively on Playstation Network.

The trailer looks pretty badass, but I'm not sure if I will buy it. Its $2.99 SD and $3.99 HD per episode, so I may just get one to check it out.
  • I just finished watching, more like snoring, through the Nintendo Key note. Absolutely nothing. The only thing remotely interesting was Animal Crossing, But it's gonna be screwed up again with the friend code crap. And afterwords they talked to Reggie a bit, and he briefly mentioned friend codes and pretty much doesn't give a rats ass. I used be behind the Wii, but Nintendo is just giving a piss poor showing to the industry. they care more about grandma and moms playing than all us hardcore gamers. I fought against the 360 nuts and the PS3 Zombies and all I get from Nintendo is a plastic board and another game only grandma would play. I just don't see why everyone is crazy about the Wii. It's whole point and click and motion sensor is just a dumb gimmick. I'm not seeing the games I imaged when the Wii was first announced. Rather than trying to make interactive gamplay, Nintendo's too busy trying too sell a Wii to every Grandma becuase they now they can't compete harware wise with Xbox and PS3. So they duck tape to Game Cubes together and throw you a TV remote and tack on piss poor gimmicky motion sensor, and there fix is a extra $25 dollar add-on to get more money from you and a point and click UI.

I'm sick off Nintendo and the Wii has just been downhill from the good old days. Is anyone else frustrated with Nintendo's new Idea's, because ScRym don't think so.

Another huge problem with Nintendo is there lack of control on crappy 3rd party games. There's a bunch of Wii games and they are all crappy games.

That's been a problem at least since the GC, if not even earlier...

At this point the only things I care about are the DS and the PSP (and the PSP I barely care about). Really, gaming is going down the shithole. I wonder if they will be a turn-around at some point.

If you really want to you can sell the Wii to get a 360. That sucker is getting cheap and has all kinds of awesome games.
Really, gaming is going down the shithole.
There are plenty of games if you have a PS3, 360, or decent computer.
  • I didn't even realized E3 was going on this year... Man I used to actually care about this crap.
  • I believe this pretty much sums it up:

    Start naming.

As me and a few others were talking about above, the Wii is pretty much garbage. Then the 360 and PS3 aren't even that great. The amount of games worth playing on either console is countable on one hand. PC gaming has been [more or less] dead for awhile now. I mean, sure, the hardcore PC gamers are still out there, and games are still coming out, but the majority of people are console gamers nowadays. Then on the handheld front, the DS is doing fine, but what worries me is exactly what the Penny Arcade comic says, Nintendo is trying to target everyone BUT hardcore gamers. Sure, hardcore games are still coming out, but the ratio of crossword puzzle games to hardcore games is roughly 10:1. As for the PSP, it has a good set of decent games (less than DS, IMO, but more so than the 3 consoles) and then otherwise it's a big pile of shit.

Then breaking it down company wise...well, basically the PA comic sums it up quite well. Nintendo's targeting grandparents, Microsoft just doesn't care. They could release a massive pile of shit, label it Halo 4, and it'll be a best seller. And Sony has been on quite a downward spiral ever since the PS3 came out. Sure, their non-gaming products will keep the company nice and afloat, but they're just about fucked in the gaming department.
  • PC gaming has been [more or less] dead for awhile now.
Ummmm wrong? Also, what the fuck is a "hardcore" game? PC Gaming is far from dead.
  • Zombies on the Wii
I just wonder how bad that game is going to look?
Although at least you will be able to read the writing on a normal TV.

That's funny, because all I've been doing for the last few years is playing PC games.... (with some DS and a few Wii and PS2 games thrown in for good measure)

Good for you. You (and this forum as a whole) doesn't even come close to representing the norm with PC gaming. Let's say that 60% of people on this forum play PC games...outside of this forum the number is much, much less.
Ummmm wrong? Also, what the fuck is a "hardcore" game?
I think it's easier to classify non-hardcore games. A non-hardcore game is your Brain age, Wii fit, crossword puzzle games, 99% of the wii's library, 90+% of the DS's library...in general, games geared for your little sister and your parents. Shit like that.

Regardless, most people I've talked to think PC gaming is dead, and general gaming is going downhill (See: Today's penny arcade comic). And really, with PC gaming, all you got are FPSs (most of which are on consoles anyhow...), RTSs (which really aren't that great or popular, far as I'm concerned. I had a few friends big into RTSs back in the 90s, but now I have only one friend into RTSs, and he's only into Starcraft), and MMOs (which are shit...that's as unbiased as I'm getting regarding MMOs :D).

The sales numbers these days still to my knowledge don't take account steam or online distribution of games as well as the monthly cost of MMO's and other game services like Gametap.
  • I'll give you that steam is successful. It's hard to argue otherwise.
On that other hand, it's mostly Half Life, Portal, and TF2. Outside of that I couldn't name you anything else that's popular from Steam.

If you can't classify a "hardcore" game then there is no such thing. The idea that "hardcore" games are inherently better is complete and utter bullshit. Why don't you go back to playing GTA IV and Madden, and leave the good games to us.

Console shooters are shit, any decent gamer knows this.
RTSs (which really aren't that great or popular, far as I'm concerned. I had a few friends big into RTSs back in the 90s, but now I have only one friend into RTSs, and he's only into Starcraft)
Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Starcraft 2, Supreme Commander, Red Alert 2, Sins of a Solar Empire ...As well as non-real time strategy games like Civilization IV, Galactic Civilizations 2, and Heroes of Might and Magic V
MMOs (which are shit...that's as unbiased as I'm getting regarding MMOs :D).
Doesn't matter how good they are really. MMOs are part of PC Gaming and they are so fucking popular, it's crazy.

Not to mention all the bazillion mods out there for games the people still play and freeware games like Battle for Wesnoth and BSG:Beyond the Red Line. How about "casual" games like Peggle and Audiosurf.

My WoW playing friends have all told me that their servers used to be clogged as fuck...now it's tough to get people together for raids.
I realize that there are other MMOs, but that's just one good example of a previously crazy popular MMO going down the shithole.

I'll attempt to classify hardcore, then.
Contra, Fire Emblem (not the Fail Emblem Wii and GC games, though), most PC games that Rym and Scott talk about that the average Joe has no fucking clue about, Smash Bros (I'm talking the people that really get into it and enter tourneys and shit), Disgaea...anything from NIS, StarCraft, FFTA (The people who put in over 100 hours into it), Advance Wars (like how people dedicate themselves to it and put in a fuckload of hours)...

Essentially, games that fall in a niche or quasi niche genre that are subsequently quite difficult...and in general games that people tend to really get into and spend a ton of time with.

The fact that you've never heard people talk about "hardcore" games kind of staggers me, to be honest.

I know people who get really into and spend a lot of time in what you would call a "casual" game. I spent a shit ton of time playing Peggle, does that make it a "hardcore" game?
The fact that you don't know what a hardcore game is kind of staggers me.
Oh, I know what you mean by "hardcore", I just think it's bullshit.

Oh please, this is ridiculous. If you are saying WoW is going down the shit hole because your friends can't get a group together, you must be delusional. If you look at the subscription numbers, you will see it's still very much alive. Just wait for the new expansion to come out.

    subscription numbers
!= people actually playing the game.

Regardless, and back to the actual thread topic, e3 was shit, and it's clear that the big 3 console companies are going down the shithole. Ignoring PC gaming, I'd like you to attempt to argue my point.

I think it's just your friends server. What other MMO do you think the other people are playing?

EDIT: It seems a lot is going down the shithole. Though I haven't read anything about E3 that's what I gather from reading your comments.

But I don't disagree with your console point. I could honestly care less about how well consoles are doing...
  • Wait, all 3 companies are going down the "shit hole"? But everyday I read on the internet that Nintendo is "printing" money. Is it all wrong?

Is this supposed to be in green?
From what I understand from reading around Andrew's and Dkong1026's argument, the games are going down the "shit hole," not the company. The complaints are that we aren't getting any good games in their opinions, and this E3 was lame, so it's not a god sign. Or something to that effect. I got lost during the argument.

Oh noes, only 13% growth in the video game industry is predicted this year!!!!!

Ahh, so the real topic of argument is "The games of today are made of fail".
Again, we return to the topic of argument, I guess?

I only skimmed through what they were arguing about. So sorry, I can see how the games are getting worse.

For quite a few people, it rather seems to me that the real meaning of the term "hardcore game" is "a game of great interest to a hardcore gamer; that is, of course, me"

Sorry dude, I thought you were actually talking about something, now I just think you're whining because you don't like anything. You're more jaded than Rym and Scott ffs!

EDIT: Freakingly useless numbers in your username added to properly indicate the fool that's being quoted.

Don't worry, so did I, but I do think they said companies at a point, which isn't true. The DS prints money, and I bet Halo weapons shoot out rolls of coins.

Yeah, Dkong said it, but I guess he meant it in the sense that the only thing that can come out of a shithole is shit. Of course, that's giving him far too much credit, he just phrased it badly.

So, let's bring this back down to earth, shall we?

Discussion:- So far in 2008, what good games have there been? Why so few / many?
Not sure about the platforms, but Dkong wanted focus on Wii/Xbox 360/PS3
