  • So, I was asked to dress up as PSY for Halloween, but I fear that it will be massively overdone. Do you guys have any other geeky costume ideas that I can wear to work? It can't be too obscure, unfortunately.
  • Steve Irwin.
  • That's random.
  • I was picking the equivalent "topical" and overdone costume from a few years back.
  • If you do, be sure to carry a sign protesting whatever random brand of sunscreen you have to hand, because it doesn't protect you from harmful rays.
  • Hah! That's kinda funny, but I don't think I can pull it off. YOU can, Churba, for obvious reasons. Any other ideas, guys?
  • Im going with Homeless Ash with a sign saying "Beat Elite Four Still Poor", along with a beard, brown bag of booze and ragged jeans.

To make it even more sad, you should somehow tie it to the Pokemon World some more. Maybe you gambled everything away at the Rocket Game Corner.
  • I was going to have a friend dressed as Pika'chu would would do "Tricks for rare candy".
  • Is fancy dress cosplaying?

    Fucking Voltorb Flip...

  • Is fancy dress cosplaying?
If it's based on a character of some sort...yes!

  • I'm still a little hazy on what make "cosplay" different from "costuming." According to Wikipedia, cosplaying involves focusing on a character and trying to adopt the persona of that character in actions, words, etc. Although that last part could be argued that its not a requirement. It also seems to matter what event the costume is for. If the event is known for cosplay, like an anime convention, then you'd be considered a cosplayer if in costume. If its generic Halloween and you're not at a specific "this is cosplay!" party, you're just costuming. I feel like in general that stuff from anime, video games, and sci-fi/fantasy media is cosplay, but other stuff is considered just general costuming. But there are many arguments for exceptions, and this is why I'm still confused about it. :-P

  • I just went with that as there are so few costumes that I can full off with out looking painfully bad. That and I love the idea of what happened to the kids from Pokemon after they had beaten all the bosses. Brock arrested for harassment, Misty settling down for a quiet life and Ash haunted by a life of lost glory and hollow victory.
  • So this counts:

The pose was from memory, so sorry for the wrong handedness.

I think I might try a Sweet JP costume for Halloween, since my girlfriend wants to dress up as Crab Sonoshee. Not sure where to find the racing suit, or a proper wig, though (I don't have enough hair to make a GALACTIC POMPADOUR on my own).

EDIT: Also, I'm nowhere near as attractive as this guy:

  • I have been trying to grow a pompadour for a while now. I am now certain that my girlfriend is cutting my hair in my sleep.

The distinction I've noticed is entirely is this a character or a "archetype". Cosplay is almost always "I'm X from Y", where costuming is more "I'm a X". The difference between I'm the wicked witch of the west vs I'm a witch. The taking on a specific persona is just more of a requirement of being a specific character.

There was a guy at Otakon that cosplayed JP by using an inflatable pompadour. It was very fun.
  • Went to NYCC doing a mediocre approximation of Jack Harkness today. Should I try to find pics of it to post here?

Okay, should I cosplay as death (cheap, easy) or Darth Vader (monies, more awesome) for halloween?

    How tall are you?
    About 5'7" to 5'9", I think.

  • That's too short for Darth Vader. Go for Death instead. Or Dark Helmet.
  • edited October 2012
I'm 5'11" thank you very much...
Also, if I WAS to be Darth Vader, I have the means to play the Imperial March wherever I walk using a non-obvious speaker.

Which Death? Have you worked on your All Capital Letters voice?

  • Death as in from Grim Adventures? That would be fun.
