I'm also done with Geeknights podcast. Originally, I would lay alone in bed listening to Rym and Scott's dreamy voices as I touched myself, but alas, they no longer rock my socks off. I have moved on to better masturbating material such as Anime Pulse and Ninja Consultants.
The more and more I read of them, the more I enjoy Jen's posts.
The reason that topics sound thrown together is because they are.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well. Some of the RFID information was at the very least misleading, and it was said in a repetitive cocky manner. EverySome episodes drips with "you're wary of new technology, well you're stupid. look at them, they're stupid. we're smart. we love technology." You remind me of San Franciscans, maybe you should come out here.
Edit: Absolutes are horrific. I like some of what I've heard, otherwise I wouldn't have listened in the first place.
Geeknights somehow died for me with the episode on WLan hacking, instead of talking about the technology behind it, they rambled about the moral and ethics behind it. Overall it was more of a Thursday show rather than part of a science and technology podcast.

Wait, do you mean Geeknights 080728 - Stealing Wifi? I agree that it didn't have much actual technical talk, but we already know that they are having a hard time thinking up Monday shows. So you can't really blame them if they do something vaguely related to Monday.
I had the Same problem a while ago. Even though I want to hide this post under the rug, it might help you. Here
You made fair points that I think Rym and Scott should really think about, you just presented the points in a terrible manner (grammar errors, caps lock, internet tough guy, etc)...and as such, not many people took that thread seriously.
You were also being a dick in that thread when people were telling you to correct your grammar. Really, it's not that fucking hard to do, and it'll earn you a lot more respect than by acting like a 10 year old about it.

The hacking side of that particular issue is trivial and boring. Run a WEP cracker: done. If it's not WEP, give up. ^_~
Science and technology are permanently intertwined with morality and ethics.
Intertwined, maybe, but not all there is to it, like in your episode. Many people find things boring and trivial, which I'm intrigued by, something most geeks should be common with. I know that the technical side to most stuff is boring, but just scratching that matter would have vastly improved the episode.
Geeknights used to give me light introductions to things I didn't care/think to look up in Wikipedia, now it's braking things down to boredom, for people, who wouldn't even listen to Geeknights imho.
If Geeknights is too much work considering the final product, you guys should really step down and only do episodes when you want to do an episode. In the end you may consider something like "so many episodes a month, whenever we feel like it".

WHAT! The ethics and moral issues are a huge part of Science and technology. (this coming from someone who went to all the bioethics and techethics classes he could in college).

Yeah I know. I just expected something different from a Monday's Geeknights.

I think Mondays could focus/be influenced on tech news moreso than the other episodes. There's plenty of developments happening every day in the tech industry, why not have the "feature" be a more pressing issue (the iPhone episode is a good example of this).
I can't really say I am done with GeekNights, but I defiantly do not listen as often as I use too because I don't listen to my Zune at work anymore. Though I can't really throw away GeekNights only because it is a good resource for finding out about things that you would want to get into. Also I must really thank Rym and Scott for doing this show in the first place; because when I was at my old job it got me through nights when I worked alone during the third shift, and the only piece of electronics I had at the time was my Zune. So through Anime World Order I found this show, and after that I filled easily 8- 10 hours of my time. In that time as shitty as my job was it was awesome because your show made it that way. So yes I see where everyone is going with their criticism, and I agree with it but I am hopeful that once the fall/winter comes things will pick up.
I still listen to the show. While it would be great if ever show was super awesome. Duds are to expected, every content creator has their off days. Well except for Fast Karate and the Gentlemen. Everything Dave and Joel put out has been gold.
I understand why some like it and some don't, and I feel your pain Kilarney. There was a certain part about the show that I liked: two guys talking about their daily misadventures. My favorite episodes were always the ones were you guys just ramble on about the fun you had, like the Snow episode. I loved listening to Scott and Rym reminiscing. At other times I thought your shows were very intelligent.
However, I was always frustrated by their egos. They always seem to feel that they are the final say and that no one else matters unless they think highly of them or become convinced that they are right. They always said stuff was "awesome", when it would've sufficed to be a bit more humble. They'd never consider the possibility of being wrong; they're too egotistical to give up an argument. Sometimes it's good to be confident. However, to a guy who doesn't have a lot of confidence himself, someone who's able to see both sides of an issue and keep the possibility of being wrong open, someone who's respecting and humble (I know the irony of saying that, but I assure you, it's true. Maybe I'm just too weak to stand my ground ;( ), I just couldn't take it. I haven't listened since. I need to make decisions on my own, and two arrogant dudes telling me what's right and wrong just isn't going to cut it. Rym, Scott, I respect your intellect, your insight, and your confidence. I just don't respect your egos.
I will always and immediately concede a point if proven wrong. ^_~
More to the point, whenhavewe actually been wrong?
Is it even statistically possible for Scrym to be wrong? That might be a good topic for a mathematics dissertation. It's safe to say that they suffer from no human flaws or frailties. In fact, they're probably the closest thing to gods any of us are likely to encounter. But have they ever been wrong? I almost feel a little heretical for even entertaining the thought. It might be better to first decide whether they are, in fact, mortal.
What do you think? Is it possible that they are mortal? Is it blasphemous to suggest that they are?
Ummmmm . . . you are neither a radio personality nor are you famous.
You beat me to it! The whole reason I listen to podcasts is to get away from that stuff. For years, radio has sucked. If you're looking to copy radio personalities, you better think twice. The world has enough Rick Dees, Casey Kasems and Ryan Seacrests. Do we really need another "Morning Zoo?"
The reason we come across as never being wrong on the podcast is because we never talk about something we don't know about. When we don't know, we say we don't know. If we do try to talk about things we don't know about, we make it clear that we are just guessing. It's very easy to avoid being wrong. Just don't pretend to know something you don't.
The reason we come across as never being wrong on the podcast
And for the record, that's not really the issue I had. I don't take any pleasure in listening to people who are wrong. Rather, I enjoy listening to people who know their stuff. Whether or not you were humble enough to admit what you didn't know - that never really bothered me.
Ego is fine if it flows from the product. It's a problem if the product begins to flow from it. That's one of the reasons that I stopped listening. Ego doesn't bother me at all unless and until it decreases the relevance and/or entertainment value of the podcast. IMHO, that's what has happened.

All the time about anime and Japanese stuff. Like mistaking Tenipuri for Oofuri. How horrible a mistake!
Also, my all time favorite mistake: Scott: Mushishi looks better because it's using twosies. (He meant animated on 2's) Heeeheeehheee.
Anyway, just blow them off when they are full of themselves. Their constant refrain of "I'm so great! I'm so awesome!" gets a bit old, but if you can get past that, they are pretty cool. It only really gets to me when it becomes "I'm so great and everyone else sucks!" That makes me mad.

I'm not sure if this really applies to this thread. But hey, you can't go wrong with french toast (a.k.a freedom toast).
And I have to say, Jen is definitely awesome at the trolling business. Even if it is trolling.
VHDblood answered your question, I'm just posting this for future reference...
