Good points but saying you were there and being there. Total worth it experiences
What's the significance of standing in one geographic location during a scheduled event and standing in another geographic location? What's to be proud of about that?
Even worse, this is a planned public event. With tickets no less. We're not talking about some Boston Tea Party here. Getting tickets and going to see something doesn't make you special. People trying to get tickets to see you, now that's something to be proud of.
Who said anything of making myself special. I just want to see it in person for a change. I never been to anything like this. Totally new experience. Gotta do it once at least.

You're not going to see anything. You're going to stand in a crowd for many many hours. It's going to be uncomfortable. You better hope you don't have to pee, you aren't going to be going anywhere, or sitting. You won't be close enough to hear or see any part of the actual event, unless you get there way way way in advance.
But you know, if you've never been to such a thing before, you should go. Then you'll learn that I'm right.

Know what would be great? If Obama would come out and say, "no big party. We can't afford to waste the people's money on such things while people are losing their homes and jobs." Then he could have a private ceremony and just be President.

Do you mean the Inaugural Ball, or the ceremony itself?

The entire thing. Just have a small ceremony in the Rose Garden and be done with it.
Meh, the entire thing probably won't cost more than a good round of Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. I say let him and the citizens of this country enjoy something special. It might even do us some good.

Yeah, he shouldn't get to celebrate because he's not really president, right?
Sorry. he really will be POTUS. History books are not going to have an asterisk next to his name. As POTUS, he will have just as large an inauguration as anyone. Larger, in fact, because everyone except you tin-hat types loves him.

Hey, give the kid some credit, Joe. He didn't say that. You're just putting words in his mouth.

I agree with you. The government needs to do more business and less exhibition. The inauguration should be a bare-bones affair that minimizes expenditures. If the DNC wants to fund the party, that's fine. If NBC, ABC, and CBS want to foot the bill, that's fine. If Bill Gates and Warren Buffett want to pick up the tab, that's fine. It shouldn't be done with tax money.
However, John, it does sound in the context of your other posts as though you want Obama downplayed simply because he is Obama. Maybe you don't mean it that way. Regardless, that is how our keen, oversized, sexy minds are perceiving it.

You make a valid point, considering all the other stuff the government pays for the inauguration is a rather minimal cost. Most of which is going to pay for the people working overtime (ie: police, and secret service,) who aren't the worst people in the world to be giving more money to.
I agree with Jason. If he wants a big gala event do it on the DNC's dime not the American taxpayer's dime.
As for you Joe, you just don't seem to understand that a supporter of a politician is still free to criticize that politician if they do something that the supporter does not like. The blind faith in Bush that many Republicans showed used to bug the shit out of you so why does it bother you so much when the parties are reversed? Obama is not made of glass and blind faith is a bad thing.
I understand your desire to stay silent during the election so as not to provide ammunition for the opposition party but he won the election, in a landslide no less. He's not going to be forced out of his POTUS job because of citizenship issues either (even though the "who has legal standing" issue is a question you should care about). So why are you acting like a jack-booted brown shirt who can't tolerate any form of criticism of Obama?
With the Presidential Inauguration just around the corner next week (and with my tickets en route to my house) I thought it would be beneficial for me to touch upon the misinformed ideas regarding who pays for this costly event. I've read on various blogs and political websites complaints that $40 Million dollars in tax payer money is going to waste on the Inauguration set to take place next Thursday.
This is a common complaint made by the public, especially from members of the losing party, to make our re-elected President seem like a selfish fool (something he is most certainly not). In actuality, the entire inauguration, including all of the fireworks, parades, parties, and events are paid for by donors. Not one cent of tax payer money goes to paying for the events, and in this inauguration the only tax payer money even being used is D.C.'s homeland security money to cover the increased security measures (something the city would be responsible for anyways). So efforts like Alternet's "Not One Damn Dime" are fruitless, mislead attempts to make a point that is already moot.
In fact, it's no secret as to which corporations, businesses, groups, and private citizens donate to the cause. The inauguration planning committee plans on raising $40-$50 million dollars for the event, and so far they are right on track. For a list of all the major donors (who can't donate more than $250,000), visit the Official Inauguration Donor Page on the Inauguration website.
I am quite interested to see how all of these events are going to play out next Thursday, when I drive down to D.C. with a friend of mine. The events should be televised on all the major media stations, unless CNN finds footage of a cat in a tree. But for you liberals out there freaking out about paying for an inauguration you don't want... rest easy, this one's on me."

Johnny, so far the only things that have come up here is your stupid idea that Obama is not a natural born citizen and your stupid idea that the inauguration should be a small affair. Saying that these ideas are stupid is hardly blind faith.

I don't even know what you're talking about. Is English a second language for you? Try again.

If you don't know what someone is talking about you have two options:
1. Ask for clarification. 2. Don't respond.
Instead you choose to respond and come off sounding ignorant or just plain stupid. Even worse is when you put words in people's mouths because you don't understand what is begin said.
Well I want to try to make it but I dont even know if my job even offers vacation time, On top of that I dont know if I can afford it cause im a poor kid.
We bought our MARC tickets on December 20 (my birthday). MARC actually did a good job of keeping the enormous line of people moving (I bought our tickets at Camden Yard), but their website was down for most of that day.
Now we just have to walk down to Camden Yard that day, a trivial distance, and we'll leave the car at home. Excellent. Also, we've been invited to a reception for the NH delegation. That should be pretty nice.
Rym, are you planning to be there Tuesday to Wednesday? or Monday to Tuesday? I in error thought it was on Sunday.. Now I have to think about taking a day off.
I wanted to go but Washington will be close starting Sunday, the only way for me to get there would be by taking the bus and then the metro :S. traffic will be allowed from Maryland but not from Virginia :S
Didn't Lincoln skip Baltimore because of an assassination threat?
Obama hosting pricey party in a dicey economy$150 million? That sure would go along way if it were spent on things like vaccinations or helping people avoid foreclosure on their homes. You would think that in this down economy the inauguration should cost less (not more) than the previous one. Isn't a 3x price increase a bit extravagant in our economic times?

Think of all the people who are getting paid that night :-p
Just a note I found interesting.

I just checked our congresswoman's site. They've been in high demand so maybe I wont be able too. (T_T) The downside of living in a place that was 95% Obama.
