That speech was really very good. The more I think about it, the more I like it. That's the type of exposition that schoolkids will be taught in the future alongside the speeches of JFK and MLK.
I was so moved to be there yesterday. I hurt all over today, and today will probably be a crazy work day, but we'll be able to tell kids in the future that we were there. Whenever we go by the Capitol in the future we can point to the place we stood and remember that we were there.

Where exactly were you? On the mall? If so, where?
Whenever we go by the Capitol in the future we can point to the place we stood and remember that we were there.
The key to MKL and JFK is that their speeches had a catch phrase that aught on. ("I have a dream", "Ask now what your country can do for you...") What is the phrase that you think will catch on from Obama's speech?
We're sitting in Union Station waiting for the train home. We had a great time. You should have heard the thunderous cheers for Obama and the kettle drum-like sound of boos for Bush.
We even saw Marine 1 (I'm sure it had a different call sign at the time) take Bush away. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
You are a very angry man. Instead of focusing on the great positives of the day, you choose to dwell on anger over what has passed.
Yeah, why be angry about a decimated economy, mounting unemployment, massive deficits, all of those that died in a pointless war that left the world less stable than ever, justifying and employing torture, politically based employment practices in the justice department, a depletion of a surplus withing months of entering office, a complete lack of responsibility for mistakes made, etc.? The problem is, we wouldn't need quite so much hope for the future if the very recent past didn't screw up quite so hard.

I had to quote this one because I want to be sure it is still here 4 years from now. I also want to see how many of these things are still going on under Obama in 4 years.

Obama can only play damage control and the full amount of shit has yet to hit the fan (as far as the economy is concerned). Cleaning up after the Bush disaster will take far more than four years. I am sure Obama will make mistakes, but Bush created disasters.

Another good question - since so many of the people who voted for him have such unrealistic expectations of him(which amount to Waving a magic wand and all of their problems and quibbles vanish), when these expectations are not met for the obvious reasons of Obama being the president, not the genie that comes from rubbing many ballot papers together, will they vote him in for a second term?

It's not unrealistic to expect him do things like stop torturing, close Guantanamo, stop the shredding of the Constitution that's been going on for eight years, pursue a realistic science policy that would allow for funding of stem cell research, and refrain from pursuing the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war. As of right now, it's pretty clear that all of those things are going to be done.
I think there is a lot of talk about unrealistic expectations, but I think most people know he isn't a miracle worker.
I can't say - I'm not American, and I don't live in the US - but I will attest that this is not the way it's portrayed in either the Australian or British media, by my admittedly unqualified analysis.
In the U.S. almost every story regarding the Obama Presidency includes some reference to the fact that expectations may be too high and that times are tough. I think this has put a damper on those that expect too much.

Who raised those expectations to such lofty levels? Why didn't Obama counter those people and say, "you guys are a little bit over the top in these expectations" or something along those lines?
I'm just so happy that he's President now. I don't remenber when I've been happier. Election night comes close, but this is like some kind of Nirvana. I am overwhelmed by joy.

When is he going to post the complete text of the Executive Orders I heard about on the news today? I want to talk about them but I can't until I can read the full text of them.
Obama takes presidential oath — again. I'm glad he did that. I was getting tired of the "he's not really the President because he didn't say the oath correctly" conspiracy nuts.

Yeah, they're almost as bad as those "he's not really the President because he's not a natural born citizen" conspiracy nuts.

Sure are. Too bad that SCOTUS decided not to answer that question and settle exactly what "Natural Born Citizen" means, eh?

Why? Your life isn't going to change that much. Be happy, but keep it in perspective. Next we'll be hearing about some sort of effulgent aura you witnessed.
You've never been happier in your life? If this is really true... err... well... I just hope it isn't.
My fear is that unrealistic expectations will only serve to make Obama look less than capable. They guy has a hard enough job. Let's cheer progress if and when it happens without being deflated when he doesn't walk on water. The path won't be totally smooth. It hasn't been for any president.
A successful Obama will be the best thing for America - for many reasons. But let's set the bar at an obtainable level. Anything else is just unfair.
BTW... you still haven't said how far from Obama you were during the ceremony. I'm curious.

Hey, it's not all bad, Steve. There is always the possibility that the orders he signed between before the second swearing in are not valid. Without a supreme court verdict on the matter, you and your "neocon" pals could dine on that tripe for years and years.
Oh, and maybe the second time around he swore on a Koran? Who can say for certain, there were no cameras! Enjoy, buddy, that one is on the house! Edit: My bad, I misread an article.

What in the world are you talking about?
Your penchant for pointless criticism of and believing conspiracy theories about Obama. I told you that you were going to acquire a reputation as a tin-hat person for holding so strongly to the "natural born citizen" silliness.
Now you're building up a reputation as a slavery supporter. Is that what you want?

My interest from the start in the "Natural Born Citizen" issue has always been that the term be clearly defined and that candidates be properly checked out before their name is allowed to appear on the ballot. I may have been sucked in briefly with the Berg hype but I have since seen through that to the real Constitutional issue of the term needing a clear definition and the Presidential Election System needing a clear policy on how the requirements for the office are verified before a candidate is allowed to appear on the ballot.
The only one painting me as a slavery supporter is you.
The only one painting me as a slaverysupporteris you.
No, you specifically said there were certain conditions under which slavery was morally justified. Specifically, you made the case that if a society's only option was to enslave people or to kill them, then slavery was morally justified. I contend that your underlying premise is flawed, there is never merely one option or another. "Give me liberty or give me death."
