  • The number four key on my laptop keyboard popped off and will not go back on. I am fucking pissed. I called Acer and they told me I'd have to mail them the computer for them to put the key back on. Can anyone tell me any reason why the fucking key won't go back on to the god damned keyboard??
  • Look on the back of the keys. They may have little clips that need to be lined up with the metal wires holding them in place.
As this may be different on your laptop, could you get a picture showing where the key should go, and the back of the key.
  • Maya 2010 + Newest Wacom Intuos Driver = Mac OS Kernel Panic.

Also, sometimes my video memory gets corrupted and it looks like stripes on the screen and the drop shadow on all the windows turns into a scary black mess.
  • Some dumb little thing on my key was partially broken, somehow, but I managed to snap it back on. It's not the same as before - a little lower than usual - but I can use it and that's what matters now. It was just causing me a ton of angry problems this morning.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wireless router for us. I don't wanna go over $75, and I'm looking for a Linksys brand. Our old router is a Belkin that's been getting progressively worse with time. We've gotten to the point where it drops our internet every few minutes each night. I hardly know anything about routers besides how to set them up, so any advice would be great.

    Any reason for Linksys exclusivity?
    Wireless type 802.11 g or n?
I would personally recommend a Billion wireless router, they're cheap and survive for many years.

Linksys WRT54G, if you know any techy friends, get them to put Tomato on there. I have not yet had mine drop out in over half a year since I got it.

The WRT160N is looking pretty good but has one hardware version which isn't Tomato compatible.

  • It might be just my computer, or it might be the forum, but about half the time I click on "Add your comments" it doesn't add the comment, but instead takes me to the "Start a new topic" Screen.

I've had that happen before as well. I haven't worked the cause out, though. If I recall correctly, refreshing fixes it.

  • So, my new RAM works, and the PC boots, but it keeps freezing at 7's little "Starting Windows" animation. Anyone ever have this issue? I've googled for it, and none of the other solutions help.
  • Run Memtest86+ ?
  • Run Memtest86+ ?
One of the ram slots was busted. While figuring this out, the mobo toasted both new RAM sticks.

This computer will have been sitting for a month and a half before being usable.

Heh, well, at least you bought something. I still can't decide on a laptop. It's much harder with those because you can't pick and choose every single component.

  • Can anyone recommend a Windows scanning program? Got a bunch of old photos my sister had that I'm going to scan.
  • So I have two monitors here, one of which is a TV that I use for media. I'd like to have Netflix Instant on fullscreen on that monitor while I work in Firefox on my main screen. However, the moment I click in the other Firefox window (or any other program: Skype, Chrome, Steam, OpenOffice), Netflix leaves fullscreen mode. Is there any solution to this other than something like Boxee?

I use photoshop, I can't think of a free version.
  • Wrong quote there.

I get like 10-20 minutes of decent Wi-Fi connection on my home network, then I get a connection speed that is soooo slow that it doesn't disconnect from the internet and pages won't load and will time out after 5 minutes. My only solution is to go into the network settings and renew my DHCP lease, which allows me to get another 10-20 minutes. Rinse and repeat. I don't have this problem anywhere else, just at home.

I'm using an 802.11G D-link wireless router and a Macbook Pro 17" pre-unibody running Snow Leopard.

Edit:I don't have this problem with my iPod Touch. when it is on Wi-Fi.

Then clearly the problem is in the Macbook somewhere.

Any good paintshop program should work - I mean, I use Paint shop pro 7 for my scanning, and it works pretty much as well as anything else.

I already took it to Apple and they swapped out the Logic board, it contains the network card, and that didn't solve the problem. I doubt it's a hardware issue since I don't have this problem anywhere else. Could it be that the iPod's and the Mac's wireless are some how conflicting with each other?

    Have you reset the router?

P.S. - The iPod shouldn't interfere with any other wireless device.

  • Is this the macbook with the metal shell (I don't know too much about macbooks...)? I have recently acquired one and had similar problems with random networks. What I have deduced from lots of googling is that the shell on mine is reducing the effectiveness of the antenna and causing many problems with maintaining or even finding a signal in some places. And apparently macbook pros are notorious for these sorts of problems.

I was able to fix the problem by manually setting the channel on my router to something that isn't as cluttered. Mostly with trial and error.

Windows' built-in scanning software should be fine, too.

Tried it. Turns out windows uses it's own standard which my scanner isn't supported by.

What type of scanner do you have that doesn't have WIA support? Regardless of that, most scanners are supposed to be TWAIN-compliant, so any app that has the ability to acquire from a TWAIN source should be able to handle it. I use paint.net for most minor image editing and I know it can acquire from a scanner or camera, but I'm not sure if it uses WIA or if it'll pick up on a TWAIN device. I'll have to test that when I get to work today and have access to several scanners.
  • If all else fails, GIMP can do it.

I've reset it more times than I can remember.

I know about the aluminum shell causing problems.

I thought about that but never tried it. Their is another router around here that might be on the same channel. If I remember correctly, their are like 11 channels and their are two really good ones right?
  • So lately my computer has been crashing. Specifically when I am watching videos and whenever I try to play 'real' games. Before that it was (and still is) unable to play 3d games even as basic as WoW let alone Mass Effect 2. I'm assuming there is a problem with my video card overheating, but want to be as certain as possible before buying another one. I built it myself mind you, and in the past it has well played WoW, Prototype, and Fallout 3 before falling into...whatever I would label this as.

    Ultimate 7 64 bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processort 6400+
    2.0gb ram
    ati radeon 2600xt video card
