  • Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by Oblivion too. It kept getting better as it went through, too. All the massive plot holes I thought were there at the start were cleverly explained away by the continuing twists and reveals.

The Riddick movies are B grade stories with A grade production values.

The dude killed a man with a TEA CUP.
I meant the Riddick (2013) movie. I agree with your prior assessments of B grade goodness for the prior movies.
  • A Million Ways To Die In The West...

Too funny. Whole theater was roaring.

Has the feel of Family Guy (random shit thrown in for five seconds) with a good story and enjoyable characters. Tons of cameos/homages to other films. Too many inside jokes to list.
  • I saw Edge of Tomorrow last night. I really enjoyed it.
  • I saw Chef. Not my normal movie. Kept expecting the usual plot devices. Never happened. It's just a sometimes funny feel-good type movie, and I pretty much never see those.
  • I'm late to it but I watched The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug.
Really enjoyed this more than the first instalment. It could be nostalgia with remembering all the bits from the book.
Benedict Cumberbatch is all the bad guys!
I liked seeing that the elves depicted as not perfect beings plus all the nods to the the Lord of the Rings.

Watching Sir Fry in this role seems to redeem him from his 24 hi-jinx.

It was fun to watch and funny at the correct times.
However I wasn't a big fan of the way the Thorin Oakenshield character is presented in the first, nor in the second instalment.

    I would watch this again.
  • Finally got around to watching -

    12 Years a Slave

What a great movie. Very few movies are able to constantly grab a hold of my emotions and this is one of them. I think a great part of it was that I wasn't taken out of the movie, possibly the only slight nudge was the appearance of Brad Pitt.

I can't believe there are people who believe American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street. were superior movies.
I guess every medium has trolls.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Holy shit. No seriously, holy shit. This is now the best Dreamworks film. The first movie is pretty damn incredible, but the sequel takes everything, raises the stakes and makes it better. Just the way that Hiccup, Astrid, Stoick and Gobber have developed over time is really shown in the script and the interactions between everyone. It's even ballsier than the first with the dramatic turns and questioning change with the villain and the dragons themselves.

And the animation...yee gods. The flying scenes are still breathtaking and the scale of all the different species from one another is incredible. What really amazed me this time is how much emotion they were able to get out of Toothless. I have so many unbelievably complex feelings from this one. Please, spend your money on it.

I think at this point, Chris Sanders/Dean DeBlois might be my favorite animation directors/storyboarders.

  • 22 Jump Street. Not sure if meant to be a parody of 21 Jump Street or a parody of Hollywood as a whole or what.

Regardless the movie is beyond funny. There was only one scene I did not like (fight or kiss). Lots of fourth wall breaking. Great acting by the two leads and Ice Cube.
  • We just started watching RoboCop (1987). It's a DVD. I have seen the movie many, many, many times before, though not for 15 years or more, but I realized at the first incident of violence that it was an edited version of the movie. What the fuck? I'm watching the movie to see the blood and splatter, not for the story or acting.

Downloading the movie now, even though I just paid to rent it. Sigh.
  • RoboCop is a lot of fun.
  • I recall their being a really good Criterion edition of the DVD that had my favorite cut of the film on it.
  • Saving Mr. Banks.

I was lead by reviewers to believe this movie was good. I disliked, to various degrees, almost everything about it. It was everything I hoped the movie wouldn't be, turned up to eleven.

The only good bits were some of the actors' performances, particularly those by Tom Hanks, Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak (Disney and the Sherman brothers), but even they were let down by the utter travesty of the story.

    Do not recommend.
  • Watched Superbad last night. Why were teen movies not like this when I was growing up? Superbad is the anti-1980's teen movie. Every where an 80's teen movie would have gone in one direction this movie went in the other.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy. A fun summer movie, but ultimately a forgettable one.
  • Was I the only one who watched Asylum's magnum opus Sharknado 2? It's a true achievement in bad film. It is clearly aware that it is a B movie, and embraces that. Where other films had tried to do this, they went too far and became excessively tongue in cheek (see Attack of the Killer Tomatoes), Sharknado 2 takes itself seriously enough to be a laugh riot.

I highly disagree. That movie is a quotefest of hilarity. I am looking forward to reviewing this with @Jason for Bunker Talk.

I personally thought Superbad sucked, I know overall I am in the minority but I was a teenager in the 90's and none of it was entertaining to me.
On the flip side I really enjoyed the hell out of Old School but many people look down on that film.

Superbad not only sucks, it's one of the very few movies I've just turned off early because I couldn't stand it. The name of the movie is extremely accurate.

I remember liking the scenes with McLovin riding around with the cops. The other two guys trying to get booze to go to a party was meh to annoying.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy is fucking legit. Don't take my word for it though.

No, seriously. Don't take my word for it. I like almost every movie I see. I don't have very refined movie taste.

I don't take your word. I take the general buzz in the Internet, which states that it's pretty cool film.
So I'll probably go watch it one of these days.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy is awesome. Ro and I have already seen it twice and enjoyed it both times. The second time around, we were able to see more details. The sound track is great, the humor is great, the casting is great. Vin Diesel is great as Groot, Bradley Cooper was awesome as Rocket. Dave Bautista was super awesome as Drax the Destroyer, Chris Pratt was amazing as Starlord (seriously though, he was awesome in Parks & Recreation and the Lego movie as well), and Zoe Saldana was awesome as Gamora. The supporting cast was awesome as well with Lee Pace and his foreboding Presence as the Villain Ronan, along with Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Riley, Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro.

I suppose knowing nothing (or near nothing) about these comic movies that are coming out allow me to enjoy them in a more pure experience without expectations of following comic lore. At the very least, it is an entertaining special effects movie with quite a bit of humor and some really great acting. Seeing it in the theater for those reasons alone is worth it.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy is loads of fun and actually really funny. Love that they were to take so many concepts from comics and actually pull them off in this form. Loved Star-Lord, Drax, and especially Rocket...I was pretty surprised how well Bradley Cooper was able to bring a lot into that characters. Lots of great scenes and "fuck yeah" moments.

I don't think it's Avengers-level good just because there's a large amount of exposition from most of the characters and the bonding seems rather sudden, but it's super enjoyable. Plus, that post-credits scene was AMAZING.
  • Just found out Guardians of the Galaxy is made by the same guy who made Super. Haven't seen GotG, but based off what everyone else is saying that's quite a range.
  • He also did the Scooby Doo movies.

Also the PG porn series. Not joking.
