Just watched Stray Dog. It wasn't about Samurai! It was pretty great, but I totally predicted the obvious plot point. All too easy.
Kurosawa doesn't just do Jidaigeki (period pieces), he does city style films in the modern era as well. In many cases, they match up to a lot of his jidaigeki. Don't limit yourself to just the period pieces, you're missing a lotta good stuff.
See I disagree with this because while the film is at least 60 years old, it really isn't something that should be spoiled because that one scene alone really adds to the overall experience. Statute of limitations whatever.
I think I like Takashi Shimura just as much as Mifune. He has the same level of awesome.
If that is the case, you will love Ikiru. Reason being that he plays a completely different role from Kanbei, but in the end you will see him from a very different perspective that will make his ranking in the awesome meter go up a few notches. Not above Mifune (you really can't), but at a very respectable level nonetheless.

It's really obvious if you watch the movie. I saw it coming at least 90 minutes in advance. You would have to be quite a dimwit to not see it coming.

Still doesn't make what happened any more or less tragic though, especially considering everything he did and said.
I thought I downloaded the Samurai Trilogy with Toshiro Mifune. I got the first one and watched it. Then when I tried to watch the second one, where was Mifune? Surprise! I got the wrong movie. I got the 1964 version, not the 1955 version.
Has anybody seen this french movie called "A Town Called Panic." All I have to say is encapsulated in this trailer.
I saw it with loltsundere and nillia the other weekend and we laughed up a storm. No other movie could make a scene which could only be described as "Steven eating the nutella toast" half so surreal and funny. For the next few days all anyone had to do was say Cheval (horse) and we would crack up.
Hey guys! I'm going to the university library to grab some movies in an hour because my ISP still hasn't allocated more bandwidth to our building (thus, no Netflix Instant, Hulu, or Youtube). Anyone have any recommendations? Stalker and Tokyo Drifter are already on the list.
Watched Hell Bound with my friends (complete with MST3K-esque commentary) followed by the greatest documentary ever filmed, Commando. We need more stealthy steel pan drum music in media.
Showed a friend of a friend the first five minutes of Repo Man tonight.
Heh heh. Like I alluded to in an earlier post -- the first five minutes is all you need to hook someone.
That's why I did it. I just met the guy, and it turns out we both really like movies. I had my laptop handy, and it was 3a, and we were discussing movies. He hadn't seen Repo Man, and was momentarily worried that I was going to try to show him the whole film. I simply said, "No, just the first five minutes."
I think the Iggy Pop theme did as much as the cop opening the trunk.

Shits.
He's coming over sometime for whiskey and Repo Man. Another day, another convert to the Way of the Shrimp.
