This game actually finally got me to buy fraps. I got a video encoding, but YouTube uploads are so slow on Time Warner. You'll have to wait for me to go to Rym's apartment. Also, having a better video card now makes fraps not suck.
The best way to find ore is to explore natural caves.
This is true. But the safest way is to dig a pit straight down, 3x3, until you hit bottom. Then start branching out sideways. You'll not only get coal deposits, but you'll also hit redstone and the occassional gold and diamond.
I like the spiral stair case method, also once I found where my "home" is I build a giant lighthouse near by using water in the middle and a lot of flint and wood to get maximum lighting.
Or you could expand out the edges of your 3x3 shaft into a one-block wide staircase that circles the perimeter of the mine shaft. That's how I did it last time I did a straight-down shaft . Of course that was because I forgot to bring enough ladder sections with me, but that's beside the point.
If you dig down in a spiral, you're not exposing as much surface area, which means you're not finding as many mineral veins. That's why ladders are the best answer. Also, wood is cheap and replenishable, so go hog wild with it. Coal and iron are not replenishable.

More precisely, you think about it in terms of blocks revealed / blocks dug. Digging straight down gets you a 5:1 ratio, digging diagonally down gets you an 11:3 ratio, and a spiral gets you a 3:1 ratio.
The question is, is that difference worth the risk of a long fall into a cave or into lava? Personally, I'm inclined towards the diagonal approach. It's also nice not to have to spend so much time putting up ladders on your way up.
Granted, if you plan to re-use such a shaft often, you'll be somewhat faster going up and down using ladders, but I still don't think it's justified. In the long term, if you really want a fast way up and down, elevators are best, but you need a bigger shaft.
Notch needs to introduce a way to make elevators. Shit would be TIGHT.
If you were invincible, you could maybe do it by falling to go down and dynamite to go up.
Also, just make it so minecarts can go up stairs.
Minecarts can go up at a diagonal, so I don't get the issue there.
If you fall into a 2-block-deep pool of water, you don't lose any health. Also, you can set up an elevator by using a waterfall and a boat. Basically, boats always try to get to the surface, so they can go up waterfalls if you set it up right. See here:
Just remember: work before craft. I doubt you'll have a problem with it, but initially I didn't think I would either. Then, I started thinking about "smelting glass for a superstructure" as equally important as homework, and I had to step back and reevaluate.
The game can be a MASSIVE timesuck if one isn't careful.

This. I set up a track system running through the tunnels between my two towers and there's a height difference between the two main shafts where they cross. The tracks will run right up them on the diagonal. Stick a couple powered mine carts at both ends of a train to act as the engines, put an empty cart and a storage cart between them, and then just throw a hunk of wood into the powered cart on the end of the chain. I'm riding in style whenever I need to get from point A to point B and can bring my loot with me.
Well F**k, this is the problem with Minecraft; every time I feel like I'm done with the game someone shows me a new nifty thing to try out. Now I gots to install elevators in my fortress of Doom. (Also I think you could make long range transportation that doesn't need unsightly boosters by building an aqueduct just right... Damn).
