It's so bad, you guys. It's terrible.
    • It's basically Facebook or Google+.
    • There are no circles or privacy settings or anything like that.
    • The no privacy settings thing would be fine if it were more like Twitter, but anyone can comment on posts you make. There's no way to prevent this, though you can remove the posts after they're made.
    • They're missing a lot of details. Like, you can't unlike things once you like them. Accidentally click on the smiley face? Too bad, you've liked it permanently.
    • There's a lot of emphasis on search - Basically, the whole thing is supposed to get you to use Bing search.
    • Their servers are getting pounded. The thing is getting hardly any media attention, but still Microsoft can't handle it.
    • The only even mildly innovative thing they've done is the "video parties" feature. It's basically just a synchronized YouTube playlist. It's essentially the Google+ Hangout's YouTube feature, but without the video chat.

    So without the good part?

  • Synchtube does that too, I wouldn't call it innovative.

Basically. This is a really weak effort from Microsoft. I don't know what they were thinking.

Apparently, if you don't want to write Metro apps for Windows 8, it will cost you at least $499.

Edit: Small correction: This is if you want to use Visual Studio Express 11. For some time, at least, you can still download Visual Studio Express 10 to do desktop apps, but who knows how long it'll be supported.

So, Microsoft launched a social network like thing.
    It's http://www.so.cl/ if anyone's curious.
You can sign into Socl with Facebook. Great job, MS.
It's just one of their research projects, I think you expected too much.

"Desktop" apps are legacy win32 apps in Windows 8; I'd be surprised if they're still available in Windows 9. Metro WinRT based apps are the future of Windows. (They still haven't clarified their game development situation to anybody's satisfaction.)

And that's the problem. Metro apps are full screen, can't multitask, and are very much handicapped compared to desktop apps.

Metro works fine for a tablet or a phone, but on a desktop machine with multiple 20+ inch monitors? It's stupid.
  • Wow, Windows 8 is going to suck dick.

If you're a power user, yes. If you're a grandma who only uses it to check email, weather, pictures of cats, etc., then it'll probably be the perfect OS.

Yeah, but fuck that. You shouldn't be building an OS for those people. There's vast amounts of science and design software that runs on Windows, and Microsoft is about to alienate that entire user base. Linux blows for most of that, and I'll be damned if I'll enter the Walled Garden of Mac OSX anytime soon.

  • Windows 8 has a classic desktop mode though, iirc.

Microsoft doesn't care about scientists and designers. They care about Grandmas and Facebook users playing Farmville, obviously.

Hell, I can deal with an OS that has a "Beginner" and "Advanced" mode -- I'd put mine in Advanced mode and leave it there. However, Windows 8 seems to be heading down the direction of only having a Beginner's mode with no way to put it into Advanced mode.

FYI, Metro apps can only be acquired via Microsoft's own App Store, so they're going down the Apple-style Walled Garden path as well.

Yes, but they're making it more difficult to take advantage of. If you want to use the latest versions of MS's compilers to develop for the classic desktop mode, for example, you have to pay a minimum of $499 to Microsoft. The free Express editions of their compilers will only let you write Metro apps.

  • After a while, I see Microsoft getting a big backlash from all this shit, and windows professional will probably be compatible with legacy shit while the home edition will just be metro.
  • Also don't forget that you need to buy the codecs for dvd playback in windows 8 to "save money for those who don't need it."
  • Does Professional have no metro?
  • Does Professional have no metro?
All the versions of Windows 8 will have Metro.

The only edition that is only "Metro" is the ARM version for tablets.

All that software will still work, and even if Microsoft doesn't want it to happen, people will release libraries for desktop apps to look more Metro, to fit in better with the rest of the OS.

As for the fullscreen issue, the Snap feature, allowing a Metro app to use 1/3 of the screen leaving the rest of the screen for another Metro or Desktop app will fit > 90% of peoples needs. Also, all power users I know use more than one monitor.

In the end, you can always use Windows 8 like an updated Windows 7 machine.

Aren't they killing the start menu and replacing it with metro? Cause that makes it pretty unusable in my opinion. Microsoft seems to be be forgetting that a large part of their user base are corporations that don't just dick around on their computers all day.

Desktop apps can be pinned to the start screen, I'm not sure what's your complaint.

If IT/Management doesn't want people to download apps they'll lock down the OS as they always have.

Not doing that. For Windows, one should always skip a generation. W8 is going to be riddled with holes and memory leaks and bullshit just like Vista was, while 7 is a mature OS with the versatility I need to accomplish what I do. I'll wait until W9, thanks. Hopefully Microsoft will unfuck themselves and start making software I actually want to buy again.

Microsoft is still having trouble getting businesses to upgrade from Windows XP. With these radical changes they're making, I predict lots of guides on how to downgrade your new computer to Windows 7 in the not too distant future.

That's true, and a lot of the same people hated Windows XP when it came out because they hated the "Fisher Price" interface changes.
  • Jason, I just told Jeremy about your theory on The Last Starfighter, because he plans on showing it for movie night. I should have recorded the look on his face when from the realization of how it could be true. It was priceless. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Jeremy is currently not happy with me because he had a lot of fond childhood memories from it.

    Had.
  • As always, disclaimer: That is Paul Chapman's theory.
