Just converted my desk at work from a sit-down to a stand-up configuration. This should help deal with some health problems I've had (it put me into the hospital a couple years ago -- more details if any of you are curious), but we'll see how comfortable I am with the setup. Supposedly standing up is healthier for you than sitting down -- at least when you're doing it for hours at a time anyway.

Let me know how it goes. I also have seen lots of real research that standing is better. Except I already have an expensive chair at home. And it would be really weird to stand all day at work when everyone else is sitting.

I didn't get a mat yet, but my neighbor here at work (who's also doing the stand-up desk thing) has a spare he said I could use.
I'm also considering getting an extra tall chair in case I wanna take a break from standing while still doing work (again, my neighbor has one as well), but I'm going to try just standing for a bit and see how things go.
Finally, as far as my health issue, I basically developed a bipulmonary embolism (in non-doctor speak: two blood clots, one in each lung). As a result, I'm basically stuck taking blood thinners (and getting regular blood tests to adjust the dosage as necessary) for the rest of my life as the doctors haven't been able to find a true root cause to their satisfaction. However, I suspect the cause is a side effect of the so-called "economy class syndrome," where you develop blood clots due to sitting in one place too long on an airplane during a long flight. In my case, it wasn't due to being on an airplane, but due to sitting way too much without getting up to stretch my legs, etc., during a high stress project at work (I tend to get wrapped up in my thoughts and such while working and lose all track of time, etc.). While the doctors agree that this is a likely cause, there isn't enough hard evidence to confirm it -- hence the blood thinners as a precaution -- especially since not only could I get another pulmonary embolism, I could also have a stroke as a result of the clotting.
In addition to the mat, make sure you have good, supportive shoes. And you may need to buy new shoes more frequently, as you'll be putting wear on them faster.
Let me tell you, support mats may not seem like a big deal, but OMFG do they make a difference.

I typically wear high-end running sneakers or similarly high-end hiking boots (depending on the weather and time of year) when at work. They seem comfy and supportive enough, but again, I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the tip.
Everything I've read about Vibrams is that one area they lack in is support. The idea is that your own arches, etc., will handle supporting you. Even hard core marathon runners from Ethiopia, Kenya, etc., who ran and trained barefoot all the time before reaching the "big time" laugh at Vibram users. They typically say, "Yeah, I ran barefoot, but it was on soft dirt/grassland/etc. I'd never be stupid enough to use those things on pavement!"
Maybe Vibrams are the way to go for standing all day?
I think barefoot is better for being in motion and shoes are better for standing still. I have no idea where I heard that, so I'm probably just making shit up here.

One other thing to keep in mind is that even our hunter/gatherer ancestors would sit down on a convenient rock, the ground, etc., when they needed a break from running around. I don't think that you can imply what the best situation is for standing from their model as even they don't spend 8-10 hours standing still all day.
I just realized Geeknights did a shout-out/mention in an episode to one of my favorite blogs, Dr. Nerdlove, who is one of the various co-hosts to Spill's podcast "The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen."
The good doctor in question recently wed his long time girlfriend, and his friends (various members of the League) created this as a wedding gift:

I don't know why, but all this "I'm a 90's kid" stuff really annoys me. I don't mean the nostalgia stuff, but just the attitude that some people seem to have about it.

There is a large one on Facebook and across memes. Some people who grew up with 90's stuff are very much "We were raised in the 90's, our stuff was the best, it's better than what's happening now, everything on T.V. should just go back to what was on in the 90's, and all the games, etc."
It seems odd to me, because I recognize most of it, and I was born in 96. If a group is going to identify with a decade, you should have to be able to remember that decade to be a part of that group.
Yeah, that's mainly what I am talking about. I think part of it is that many of the people who seem to have this attitude are younger than me which makes it worse. I love 90's shit but their air of superiority is really annoying to me.

The 80s and 90s both sucked. There was some good stuff coming out, but it was mostly in an ocean of shit. That's the same for every era, and it's immature to think otherwise. Remember that the sample size of the great stuff you remember is colored by nostalgia and a limited intake of media at the time.
