    $30 round trip for transportation.
How the hell'd you pull this one off?
Bolt Bus. It's $15 or less (and four hours) from New York to Boston one-way. This is why I'm never flying to Boston ever again. It took almost as long to FLY there if you count airport security and transportation on both ends. I'll basically never fly again unless I'm going more than 800 miles or so.

  • I think you guys had much higher costs than I did. I spend maybe $100 on food, $30 on bus tickets, $50 a night for the hotel x 3 nights. $300ish total.

Yeap. Those are some way high numbers. I spend about that much to go to PAX Prime, INCLUDING airfare to Seattle.
  • Well god-damn, BoltBus was like twice that price last I tried busing to Boston, about a year ago.
  • Parking fucked me but there was no way around that.

When did you book the ticket? They start at a dollar and go up the close the date gets. I've never paid more than $17 though, even mere weeks before a con.
  • I don't necessarily believe your food numbers, unless people seriously bought you drinks. (and your not counting drinks you bought for Emily).
  • Still a few weeks away, as I recall. Them's some black magic goin' down, there.
  • I ended up at about 2-3 hundred including badge. Most of that is badge and hotel, plus the about $30-$45 for driving costs.

Park at south station. Hotel parking for my group as $40 a night, at south station $8 a day. We only ended up paying $25 for parking.

I didn't really eat breakfast any days, and I had tiny lunches. Dinner at that bar Saturday was way cheap for what it was. I didn't go drinking any night but Friday, and I didn't even eat dinner on Thursday night. There is no way I spent more than $100 on food the whole weekend. LTK was the most expensive meal I had by far, and I only ate there once.

I only bought Emily one drink, and it was like $11. I only bought one drink myself. Ro bought me one drink. I had one further beer on Friday and Saturday each. That was it.

  • My weekend was expensive, but I paid for both myself and Nuri.
  • Once again, getting rid of the car was the best move ever.

Quite. It costs more in GAS to drive to Boston than the BOLT bus. Then there's parking. Plus, I can't sleep or play games driving a car.

Eh. My transportation share was $40. My total weekend cost is easily $800. That's really small potatoes comparatively.

EDIT: That transportation cost includes the cost of parking. Gas is split between 3 people. It takes me a little over a tank to drive round-trip to Boston.

Time is worth more to me than money, though. The bus was cheaper per person for us than $40, and got there in about the same amount of time it would have taken to drive. But, driving would have cost the driver those hours of relaxation in addition to costing more dollars.

I watched My Little Pony (using the bus's free Internet) and then slept on the way home.

  • Yeah, cars are the best for me from the Albany area. There are 2 trains that run at bad times for getting to and from the con, and are not particularly cheap. Buses (greyhound) run better, and are comparable in cost to driving, but still notably restrict the times when you can do things. Overall cars are just easier to deal with and cost about the same as the alternatives for me.

I'm not denying that. We can travel very cheaply and easily partly because New York is a hub for both Bolt Bus and Jet Blue. As long as we're going to another city, travel is cheap and easy.

  • I easily saved $70 by not taking a shuttle like I did last year from the airport to the hotel. <3 to the Silver T line.

I think you might change your tune if it was 400 miles to Boston. That's why I flew, way faster than driving.

Also, I counted incorrectly, I only spent about $700. I ate out for every meal. This was very much a vacation for me.

Well, yeah, having the car in NYC is a really stupid move. For me, it's basically the same as taking the bus.

Thought, next time, I might consider that "park at a far T station and ride the train in" idea. Fuck you $32/day parking.

Ahh, but there's nothing 400 miles away from New York I care about except Rochester.
  • On the topic of Mansions of Madness, the tommy gun in my game was priceless. It dealt 3 damage and got to attack twice. Shooting through doors does sound awesome though.

As for $, this was by far my cheapest PAX. I got hotel and transportation paid for, although I did wind up having to spend most of Saturday morning and an hour Sunday doing media stuff (although I did get to use a locker which made life easier, and went to the private Mike & Jerry Q&A which was pretty cool). Marriott hooked me up with the concierge lounge on Thurs/Fri and a $20 Starbucks gift card since it closed during the weekend, so I also ate a decent amount for free. I wound up spending $115 between some nice restaurant meals and a $35 board game.

What's 800 miles away that you care about?

PAX Prime is more than 800 miles away, as is Costa Rica and Europe. Oh, Japan too. ;^)

800 miles is about the limit of what I would accept for ground transportation. It's a fairly arbitrary number.

I think it's much higher than what you'd actually tolerate. I mean 600 miles is around 11-12 hours in a road vehicle.
  • Let's see...
    $100 Hotel
    $55 Badge
    $33 Bus + $6 T Fares
    ~$90 Food
    $20 Scarf

So that's about 305 dollars for the whole weekend. Totally worth it.

I've been on train trips nearly long before, as well as road trips. Depends on where I'm going and why. Luckily, Most everywhere I go is either in the Northeastern Megalopolis or 1000+ miles away, with almost nothing in between.

That would be great for us (Bolt Bus), unless it's actually on the same weekend as PAX. ;^)

I live just outside of Reading. You think a city named for a train baron would have trains that go places, you know? You can't even get a non-charter bus from here to Philly.

I'm not exactly sure how much I spent in total but it was within my budget of $500 dollars. I was fortunate, that I drove from Pennsylvania to Connecticut where I meet up with my friend and she drove the rest of the way. So, gas wasn't so bad and we split the cost of parking.
