  • What the fuck is that thing. It looks like a bloody pie.
  • One of my good friends grew up in Maplewood, NJ and his description of new york pizza doesn't sound like something I would particularly like. There's a place in Seattle called Big Mario's Pizza whose pizza I've heard is an accurate analog to NY pizza and it's pretty decent. I guess the benefit of NY is that it seems all the pizza is going to at least be good.
  • While I've only had actual NYC pizza once the one time I was there on a class trip about 18 years ago, I don't remember it being overwhelming good. I must say I am a fan of Chicago style, but there are limits.
  • Burgers!

Pizza can get its own thread elsewhere.

Pizza burgers are pretty fucking awesome.

Except for stupid pork-based pepperoni and its proclivity for making me violently ill.

    Pizza bagel also pretty good.
  • A few nights ago I tried Korzo Haus in nyc. They make a good burger. It's Slovakian style. They blacken the burger on both sides but leave it nice and medium rare, then wrap it with toppings in yeast risen dough and deep-fry it. Served with halusky and some pickled veg and their house special beet ketchup. Recommended.

Not sure if good, but this is news: http://gothamist.com/2014/02/06/deep_dish_pizza_nyc.php
I will do some recon and report back.
    Burn the place down. Literally.
I went. I tried the pie. Yes. It's actually a good pizza. Sauce is boss. Nice and tart. They cut the pepperoni there. Thick. Not that pre-sliced shit. Crust is thin but texture of a biscuit with crunchy edges. If you go, sit at the bar. Owner works it. Soundtrack is boss as well. Set rivalries aside. No burn down.

I had a steamed burger a little while back, I was told it's a central CT thing... But regardless of its actual progeny status, culinary etymology, or rarity or whatever, it was high on both the WTFISIEAT and OMGDELISHUS scales and was perfect for a day of paintball.

  • New burger joint opened near University , ok burgers (much better than fast food but not as good as home made).

Offered free burgers on the opening evening. Went with some friends it was kind of a stupid line when we left people had been waiting almost 2 hours in line we only waited 30 minutes but had unlimited burgers. Realistically I should have only fit in 1 burger but something about it free made me get a 2nd plus they were selling one of my favourite Pale Ales (Little Creatures).

Lamb burgers are surprisingly good here because the lamb quality grading is all export level so is dramatically better than burger beef grade mince.

It's one of those franchise places you would visit that is above fast food but below good restaurant grade food.

There is something to be said for that tier. I consider In'N'Out at this level even though it is technically fast food. Where I am in Southern California, my burger options at that tier are too small. Red Robin, which I'm not at all a fan of, and Slaters are about it. Luckily for me, Slaters is AMAZING. 'Merica burger ftw.
  • I agree, you need to have these mid tier places to provide slightly higher quality versus fast food options. They also tend to have alcohol licenses and there aren't 10 kids running around the place.

My GI system was shocked when I sampled University food and forgot that food sold to students is generally trash yet priced as high as anywhere else.

Luckily there are good cafes and these mid tier places a few minutes away.

That's the upside to UQ and QUT - they're both in the city, and close enough to residential areas that you both have decent(And in some cases, like the Pizza joint out the back of the Schonell theatre, really good) food on campus, as well as being very close to all the other food options you could want.
  • QUT is definitely better than UQ as far as food variety within walking distance is concerned, although Hawken Village does have some nice food.

The pizza place is definitely pretty good, though.
  • Long term project: Find the best burger in Berlin.

Location: Room 77 (also known for being one of the first three places in the world to accept bitcoin payments back in January of 2012)

I tried the Jimmy Carter Burger, which has peanut butter on it. It was good, but I should have stuck to the bacon cheeseburger variety so I could directly compare with other burger places. I'm going to have to go back some time to try something more standard, because while the burger was good, I don't feel like it showed off the best side of Room 77.

  • Juicy Burger has amazing buns, but I'm not impressed with anything else they had to offer.

I had this reaction as well. Great bun, exceedingly mediocre burger. Five Guys is a better burger overall, and a full meal there costs less.

I should fucking make burgers out of brisket. Need to get some packer cuts.
  • Albany is getting a Smashburger on Wolf Rd.

  • Hm. At first I was like, "What's the big deal," but then I realized they have shakes.

I will totally patronize any establishment that has both burgers and shakes.

Placing calories next to menu items makes it nearly impossible for me to order a burger and shake without going through some soul searching crap. Those things are like 1,500 calories together not counting fries.

  • I'm just too old to wash down a fatty burger with a fatty milkshake. I had some of Pete's bacon over the weekend and I was wrecked for the evening. Plus I think I'm lactose intolerant.

    Often literally.

  • This thread is important. People have forgotten that Five Guys is deeply mediocre. ;^)
  • you go to Five Guys to feel bad about yourself.

    yourself and your country.
  • I should update this thread with photos of all the burgers I've eaten since 2010. I take photos of most of them!

    They have milkshakes now.

Though I'll say that Brown Bag in Troy, NY is probably the best fast burger joint around. There is no reason to go anywhere else if you're near it.

There's a long-term photo project. Every meal of a particular type you've ever eaten as a time lapse.

Every Chipotle burrito bowl from the last two years scrolls past, and they all look the same. I feel worse about myself.
