  • Closing date should be January and I never have all my tax documents until February.
Can you ask if they'll accept an estimate based on 2011's taxes and various other documents you do have? I had to do something similar when refinancing due to my wife's home business. We couldn't provide all the tax-specific stuff for it, so instead we had our CPA produce a tax estimate that they said was okay until we got the real documentation later.
  • empties the hot water supply in record time
    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
  • Anyone know what is the hot new blogging site out there for making a good looking one? Is it still Word Press or is it something else?
Nope, it's still wordpress. At least, that is by far the highest quality per unit time out there.

Some people will tell you the answer is Tumblr. Those people are incorrect.
  • Tumblr is the newest porn site.
  • Tumblr is the newest porn site.
    And I love it.
  • Is Firefox still pretty much what everyone's using still? I dipped out of the tech world for a while, and was wondering if Chrome, Opera, or any other browser is significantly better/worse as of right now. There hasn't really been a time since '06 or '07 when I wasn't using FF.

Chrome/Firefox pretty much equal but different. Chrome is probably a little faster.

  • Most tech sort of people that I know are using Chrome. Basically, if there are Firefox-only extensions that you need, like Vimperator, stick with Firefox, by all means, otherwise jump ship for Chrome.
  • I will do so. All I use it Adblock and WOT, and Firefox has been kinda buggy for me lately. My PC is over 6 years old so it probably has some shit in there that I'm not aware of. I won't do a clean wipe since I'll be getting a brand new PC in the summer, but if Chrome is just even slightly better I have nothing holding me back from going that direction.

I use both chrome and Firefox. Firefox for most of my day to day browsing, Chrome on my netbook and for Manga(because AMR.)

Why use an entirely separate browser for Manga? AMR is chrome only, and does the best job of keeping track of my manga, which is kinda getting necessary now that I've got 186 mangas in AMR that I've already read, many of which are are periodically updated, plus 50 odd unread series. Also, syncing that list between my main desktop and my netbook - super sweet.

  • I, too, use Firefox and Chrome. Firefox on my PC for features, Chrome on my laptop for speed.
  • When did saying things were "a thing" become a thing?
  • Any good places online for cheap n64 controllers? I brought one of my n64's back after Christmas to give to a friend as a late present but I never got around to digging any controllers out and I'm afraid that most of my extras are kinda janky ones anyway. I'll check my local thrift shops but online all of them were at least $15 a piece and I figured that shit would be a dime a dozen; At least for the regular grey ones, anyway.

  • I'm working on the UI for BLOODCRUSHER II, trying to get a good mix of bulky old-style UIs without taking up too much of the screen. Blue labelled components fade when not in use.

Is there any glaring problems jumping out at anyone? I just wanna run it by some people outside of the team to make sure we aren't doing anything massively stupid.
  • It looks alright but a tad busy. You might want to condense a few of the bars into one corner of the screen.
  • Last night I uploaded the video of my "My Little Pony: Sound is Magic" lecture from Anime Los Angeles. This morning, I get an email from youtube that one of the songs I used in there was claimed by Disney. The song was "Hey Ferb" from Phineas and Ferb.
If I acknowledge the claim, the video will stay up, but will be blocked in certain countries (I don't know where). However, I feel that the usage falls under fair use because:
    • It was used in an educational context, using it as an illustration of Musical song in a lecture about sound design.
    • While the whole 2 minute-ish song was used, it is buried inside a 42 minute lecture and, thus, is not the focus of the video.
    • No one searching for that song on YouTube would be able to find this video, thus, it would make no impact on the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work.
I think I'm pretty safe, and there is the option to use "fair use" in saying the claim isn't valid. But should I risk taking on Disney?
  • I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice.

Your second and third factors have no bearing.

It's not fair use under education because you are not a school or university. Better to just reupload a version of the video where you fuck with the audio a bit there so it doesn't get flagged, or just cut it out completely and offer a link through an annotation to where people watching your lecture on YouTube can hear the song.

  • Offer a compromise: they can run an adv timed to the songs appearance OR run advs as normal but they only collect 3% of revenue based on how much of their song takes up in the full video.
  • Sonic really isn't in much of a position to negotiate this :P

Your second and third factors have no bearing.
While it might be iffy on the second one, the third one certainly does have bearing.
    3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
    4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
It's not fair use under education because you are not a school or university.
Actually, the fair use criteria aren't exactly clear on that:
    1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes.
I'm not making money through the presentation and it is to educate the audience.
Sonic really isn't in much of a position to negotiate this :P
There really isnt any negotiating going on here. Just your standard automated "Youtube found this content in your video" deal.
Honestly, though, Disney is not the size of company I'd want to go up against without a smattering of lawyers behind me.

  • No. Including the full work in another work, even if it's a small percentage, has been construed to be as infringing as a standalone instance, as the material can be derived from the work in both cases and used as an "effective replacement."

Ahhh... Well, that explains why they didn't nab it last time. I had to cut it off due to time. Meh, fuck it. Only seven people have watched it. I'll just upload a version of the video without the song.

Anyone have any anecdotes about what it might be like working for a software consulting company? I was contacted about interest in a position.

  • That could be a lot of different things, I think. The ones I've known basically functioned like an outsourcing company for different things and were in general reviled by most people that had to work with them at my company - but it might not have been bad for them/their employees. Also depends on your role, I imagine.
  • Well that sounds fun.

The one after Stimpy is Dennis Rodman, and the one after Finn is Mishka's Death Adder.
