  • I think the only way a three sex species could be efficient is if you have one sex that are the equivalent of ours males where they produce sperm throughout their lives, one that produces eggs throughout their lives, and one that receives the eggs and sperm from the other two. The only way that would really make sense is if the one that produces egg throughout their lives cannot carry a baby due to the process of creating eggs regularly, or something along those lines. That system would be quite efficient in allowing for the creature to constantly have healthy offspring regardless of the parents age.

This is coming from someone who does not know all of the science behind this, I was just making a guess at how a three sex species could happen in nature.
  • I think Dolphins need a third party to help since it can be hard to mate i the water.
  • Would a three distinct sex species be viable? How would that even work?
There's probably some way to make it viable, but I doubt the selfish gene would jump for it.
You guys keep assuming a three-sex system wherein a member of all three sexes is needed for reproduction. That generally does worse than even asexual reproduction due to complexity, so we don't see that often.

But as I just said, we have multiple examples of species with more than two sexes where any two members of different sexes can reproduce.
Slime molds are weird. I don't believe such a thing has ever been observed in vertebrates.

I would also question how much "mating type" maps to "sex" as applied to a system of sexual reproduction - particularly in animals exhibiting sexual dimorphism.

Gotta read that paper through again. Good find.

  • How many pounds of nerds candy would I need to fill a bathtub?
  • I've noticed on the Origin store it says that Empire Total war and Rome Total war are now supported on Mac but it hasn't come up in my steam list as a game I can download. I don't want to have to buy the game is there any way I could redeem te two games from the Origin store so I could play on Mac.
  • How many pounds of nerds candy would I need to fill a bathtub?
    1. Find the volume of the bathtub you want to fill.
    2. Find the volume and weight of the nerds in an average box of nerds candy.
    3. Using the volume of the tub and the volume of the nerds, figure out how many boxes of nerds you'd need to fill the tub.
    4. Using the number of required boxes, and the weight of the contents of one box, you can now find the weight of nerds, in pounds, you would need to fill a tub.
  • How many pounds of nerds candy would I need to fill a bathtub?
Just out of curiosity, why do you want to know?

    Never mind fixed it myself.

  • Does anyone know the name of this song and/or the artist? Youtube video
I spent a good hour trying to find various ways to find out what the song was out of curiosity. I used Google searches on the lyrics, iPhone song recognition apps, and searching for terms to look up famous Jazz/Hip Hop/Rappers to no avail. Even the top comments on that Youtube ask for the name of the song. It's a mystery.
  • I know it seriously irritated me. I'm used to finding it out inside of 5 minutes. I may get desperate and finally turn to....... 4chan.

I have decided that "bathe in a tub full of something that isn't water" needs to be on my bucket list. Now I'm trying to see if nerds are feasible.

Well be sure to block the drain very well, lest you end up having to explain to your plumber why your pipes are blocked by Nerds.

Or just call him a little bitch when he asked.
  • Dude, they're made of damn near pure sugar. If they block up your drain, just pour hot water down it, and they'll dissolve.

I don't think you can get enough water down there to have a significant solution. You could at best get slightly damp nerds, which would be sticker than dry nerds.

It's just to unclog it, you don't need to make a solution. If the dry nerds are clogging, it's most likely because they're locking together by shape, not stickiness. Even if you just manage to turn them into a soft slurry, it'd do the job.

  • You could, I dunno, plug the drain before putting the nerds in. :-P

Unless you are planning on getting the nerds out by letting them go down the drain instead of eating them? You should totally eat them instead. And please, wash your tub thoroughly before hand. :-P
  • Isn't eating a bath tub of nerds the perscription for getting type 2 diabetus.
  • edited February 2013
I'm pretty sure if you managed to eat the entire tub in one sitting you'd skip type 2 diabetus and just go straight to death from insulin shock/stomach rupture.

I'm just imagining you sitting in the tub, eating, and meanwhile, also 'processing ' the nerds, never getting out of the tub. It's not a pretty sight.
  • I'm thinking of building a fairly big hex-shaped table. It would be 48 inches on each side, made from two (originally) 96 by 48 inch pieces of whiteboard-like material. I'm mainly pondering what to do for a base. I'd like to build it so the whole thing is able to be folded up and stored or something (I only need it once every couple months, really).

Any ideas? I have a single 96 by 36 folding table right now, but this thing will easily be the side of two of them. That's my simplest option, I think, to just buy a second table and put the two together under the thing.
  • You know what would be awesome? A big table whose entire surface is some kind of digital display. That would be the best board gaming table EVER.

Well let's do like Picard and Make It So.

GeekChic makes it. My mom has it in her office. It's way too expensive.
  • Yeah, I thought you'd have exactly that problem. It's just a matter of time until the technology gets cheaper, though.
  • I'm just thinking of making a hex shaped whiteboard table for my apartment. That's pretty cheap.

Is there software to go with it? It's only a good board gaming table if there's compatible software.

I think it runs Win 8, or that thing Microsoft released as a beta-Win 8.
  • Windows 8 is not a board game.
