  • No to the filming, so no on mic visibility. Random locations, probably public/homes. I'm going to be getting myself a new laptop specifically for this, past that nothing. Budget is whatever I need it to be; this is a long term project I'm planning so I'm willing to sit and save in order to buy the good stuff that I'll need. No clue. No clue.

Alright, here's my list of recommended tech.

Tascam DR-40: To record without needing to start up the laptop every time. Its a fantastic bit of tech. Also, you'll want to get an SD card for it. Class 4 is fine. If you can find the DR-40 as part of a package with accessories, all the better.

2x Shure SM-57: These mics make a good sound and are solid as a rock. For recording in an uncontrolled environment, you want these. Also, they're dynamic mics, so they don't require phantom power.

2x Locking windscreens for the SM57: ESSENTIAL.

2x microphone stands. These ones are desktop stands, cheap as chips, and look solid enough, but feel free to pick another if you think it wont suit your applications.

2x XLR cables. I know you can probably find cables for cheaper, but cables are the one thing you really don't want to skimp on. Trust me.

And, for putting it all together, I can't recommend Adobe Audition highly enough. I'm biased towards version 3.0 (which you'd have to pirate to get now) but CS 5.5 is still good.

  • Just get SM-58s for like a dollar more and you won't need the additional windscreens.

    Derp. Yeah, that.
  • I'm currently in the market for a good set of earplugs. I'm using them for a band I recently joined, so I'm not looking to lose the ability to hear clearly, I'm just looking to attenuate the sound a bit and keep my hearing intact. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? I'm looking at these and these so far.

Seconded. I got some Etymotics a couple years back (after Scrym recommended them on a podcast episode) and they've been excellent.

Oh, and for some reason, Chrome's spell checker suggested "dildoes" as a correct spelling when I typoed "episode."

I'm a fan of Ear Pro myself

Rad. Time to start saving and planning how I'm gonna do this.

  • What happens if a fetus gets YY chromosomes to determine sex? Does it just self-abort or do we get a mutant?

I know it's not possible in nature, just wondering what would happen if someone in a lab made a test-tube baby (could be an animal fetus, not a necessarily a human fetus) with YY what would happen?
  • I don't think it would be viable. The Y chromosome contains very little information, and without at least one X you don't have enough to get a human.

It doesn't need to be human. I'm not picky.
  • YY is lethal, the X chromosome has genes that are necessary for a fetus to be viable.
  • Part of my brain dregs up something about XYY chromosones being more common in prisons than usual.
  • Would a three distinct sex species be viable? How would that even work?

You could have one that was able to act as universal? Im asking my biologist girlfriend. Yeah no she called me a tit.

Edit; There is the chance that it could be dominate due to flexibility but it is more likely that the YY group would die out due to Y being recessive. Also it wouldn't really be a human as it would be missing bits that make us human. (Put in layman terms for me).

There are probably mechanisms by which it could work. To my knowledge, it's never been observed in nature. A two-sex system is more efficient anyhow, so I imagine there would be a selection pressure in favor of two-mate reproduction.

It's obviously fiction, but an interesting suggestion in one of the Culture novels. In Player of Games, there is the Azad, a race with three sexes - Males, Females, and Apex. Males have a penis and testes, Females have a uterus and a retrovirus, and Apex has what is roughly a "reversible vagina" and ovum. They take the sperm from the males, combine it with the ovum, and then implant the now fertilized ovum in the females, at which point the retrovirus modifies the ovum further, and starts the gestation cycle. At least, that's my understanding of it.

Why do literary analysis papers have such generic names? I'm looking things up for an Oscar Wilde paper I have to write, and I keep on getting papers like "A Review of The Importance of Being Earnest," "An Essay on The Importance of Being Earnest," or "The Importance of Being Earnest: Overview." I'm not expecting anything crazy or awesome, but could they at least say what they're about?

Actually, there are varieties of slime molds with many sexes. Physarum polycephalum, for example, has been found to have at least ten distinct sexes. The trick is that a member of one sex can mate with one of any other sex.

There's probably some way to make it viable, but I doubt the selfish gene would jump for it.

You guys keep assuming a three-sex system wherein a member of all three sexes is needed for reproduction. That generally does worse than even asexual reproduction due to complexity, so we don't see that often.

But as I just said, we have multiple examples of species with more than two sexes where any two members of different sexes can reproduce.
  • Does anyone remember the old tablet PCs with the swivel screen or laptops where the back of the screen came off so you could use them with the non-digital overhead projectors?

Don't remember laptops with removable backs, but I do remember external panels you can attach to a laptop or any other computer with a VGA port that you can use with those overhead projectors.

Maybe I am thinking of that?

I can't find anything on Google except digital projectors and iPads.

I think this may be what you're thinking of. It's at least the kind of panel I'm talking about.
  • No, not what I am thinking of. Pretty sure it was a laptop or old-style tablet PC where the back of the screen came off to use it with the old overhead projectors.
