I am in a good mood. Don't make me regret it.
  • Thank you Jason, I am most grateful.

Now I pose some challenges to the bravest among the server players. The only equipment you are allowed is a sword and a pickaxe. You may only take one treasure per day.

In a verdant forest glade lies a pool, beneath the surface there is a powerful spade.

Where eagles dare there is a clutch of most precious eggs.

In the dwarven mines a miner has stashed all his earthly posessions.

In the tomb of the last king of the proud dwarves lies the only coins that remain of the dwarven treasury.

Finally in the remains of a once glorious temple there is the culmination of hundreds of years of dwarven craftmanship.
  • Ok, I was away for like 30 mins. Who built that ridiculously long vertical hole in my area?

    That wasn't cool.

That was probably me; I didn't really know where I was.
  • No worries, I closed it up. I finally got a good idea of what to build. This should be fun. I hope it turns out alright.

If it was a large, perfectly square hole that went down all the way, that was a loading error. You can get rid of it by logging off and on again.

Though you might want to look down it first to see if there's anything worth mining nearby.

  • Nah, it was probably a vertical shaft I dug.
  • There was some griefing last night with lava. I had to roll back the server to about 1 a.m. EST. If you were on after that, you've lost some work. I apologize. I'm looking through the logs now and am furious. There were only four people on overnight and two of them are not suspects.
  • I just want to say that that blows goats. I was on from midnight to 2 AM PST and I got a good amount of things done.

Several of us were in the GeekChat with Churba, who showed us some stuff; he messed around a little with the members of the chat but it was all consensual, hence not griefing. At one point he had an accident with fire - did it cause anything serious? Sounds to me like you're overreacting.

Someone poured lava down the stairs of a tower and punched holes in its walls, lighting fire to a dense forest that had been grown around it. The entire area around it burned down and the fire started spreading across the server.

    Pro-tip: Don't tell me I'm overreacting.
  • LoL. Every time I complain about Minecraft not knowing whether it should be LEGOs or fighting monsters you tell me that's just how Minecraft is. Well, people screwing up your shit is just how Minecraft is. It's ok if the AI smashes your LEGOs but not if another player does? Why even have a server? Might as well just all build separately and share save files.

Hey, I thought you were talking about a minor incident.

I think the tower you're talking about may have been the one Grey was working on; he told me the holes were actually supposed to be part of the tower's design, there to make it look like the tower had been blasted into from the outside, for a "dynamic" look to go with his adventure theme. If that's the one you're talking about, the holes definitely were not griefing. If you're saying it's that enormous forest around his tower that burned down, then that is serious indeed.

Why do people complain about rape and murder? That's just how life is. It's okay if an earthquake kills people, but not if a person does? Why even have society? Might as well just stay in a concrete bunker and live as a hermit.

The social contract is in play.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't an act of griefing, but I think that fire was the result of an accident by Churba. I remember having trouble getting back in to the server for a fairly long while, likely because of the size of the fire. Do you know when it occurred?
EDIT: I think it happened at around 1:55AM EDT. Does that match up?

JOSH. You mined straight through my mine and my house! And ya nicked one of my water falls!

When you dig, keep in mind you have neighbors.

I'm really sorry Sonic. My idea was to dig under and around you place. Secret passages and what not. But I failed and I meant to go back later and fix my mistakes. I've been having to deal with some family drama and haven't been able to get back on. It won't happen again.

  • This is why I build massive structures away from people. To avoid accidental digging and accidental OH SHIT EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE!!!11!!

That was definitely not me - despite the playing with lava, that was all with other players, and I was sure to clean up after myself - I did Accidentally start a forest fire at one point - I was trying to create a short tower of dirt to see if I could get up on top of that tree, and flicked to the wrong space in the hotbar when I tried to place the block - but it did come under control eventually, as best I know, that was not near anyone's place, as best I know, and was started with flint and steel, not with lava. I certainly didn't punch holes in any walls - there were no walls around to punch them in. I did, however, re-add the lava flows which were coming from the dragon head at the side of my mountain - however, that flows into a cave that links to my mine, not a forest, and I know it doesn't burn anywhere it hasn't burnt before - those two lava streams have been there a long time before, and nothing happened.

I know I didn't pour lava down tower stairs, that's for sure - the only lava falls I had any part in were one which was off my own balcony (And I fixed with water, then mined out all the cobble it left, it was right over the lower mine entrance), and one off the edge of a cliff in the middle of nowhere, with nothing in the way of construction around, only ice below. I did make sure to eyeball around before placing.

The forest fire was indeed a serious goofy-ass mistake - but I don't think it's the one you're talking about. If it is, I accept whatever punishment you want to give.

  • Oh man, had a minor scare when I read this, as the focal piece of my hut is lava running down a set of stairs. If you see that, it wasn't grief. Purely intentional : )

Sad to hear about griefing. Totally agree on the social contract. It's fun because we all agree to play a certain way. If you don't want to do that, you can play according to the Scott Rubin no-fun plan of having seperate private worlds.

lackofcheese is correct, I poured lava down the stairs to make them harder to traverse, the only situation in which the would have escaped the tower is if someone had tried to dam it. the holes in the wall and stairwell were also there to make the traverse more difficult, I'll go and see if it spilled out and how. aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm banned again.

EDIT: I take it was because what happened to the forest. So what if that ended up accidentally getting burned down? I planted every individual tree in that forest.

That was my tower, as I was no longer planning on using the server as a vent for my creative energy, I converted it into a sort of adventure for the other players, punching holes in the walls and stairwell was an important part of the conversion, they made traversing the tower more dangerous, danger which would be rewarded with the various treasures that I had secreted away in chests around the tower and it's associated caverns. It's unfortunate that this leaked out into the forest I made to seclude the tower from the rest of the server(as this was meant to make the search for treasure more of an ordeal), but that's the price you have to pay if you want have lava dripping down from the very top of the structure to the bottom.
  • Well, it clearly wasn't griefing; it happened in Grey's own area and by all accounts it was an accident.
Sorry if I accused you, Churba; I was just relating what I knew of the situation.
  • Hmm, wouldn't it be a fun contest to split the forum into two teams and have them both build a fortress impermeable to attack. Then, have them hide inside this fortress an item, perhaps a sort of flag, then have the other team attempt to capture said item and bring it back to their fortress. Capture the flag on minecraft? Fuck yeah.

It would require modding to split the the player base into factions, and then being able to ration off an area only available to each team during a building phase. There's still a lot of rules to work out before it can be implemented, but I think that would be a good idea.

Hmmmm...if only there were a game that already did that...
