Rumor alert: Some people on the Internet are saying Satoshi Tajiri (Pokemon creator) died in the earthquake/tsunami today. This is unconfirmed and there's lots of conflicting reports. Basically, nobody has any idea what's going on.
I hope it was not a radioactive explosion. A 10km Zone (yeah, I'm gonna capitalize it) has been cleared, and other sections of the plant are openly venting radioactive gas in an attempt to prevent a blowout. A meltdown is supposedly imminent.
Early signs are showing aerosolized cesium-137 coming out of the relief valves, and the radiation levels at the site are 10000x the usual. There has likely been a total meltdown, and 10km around the plant have been evacuated. Better than Chernobyl, but still bad.
And of course, this means another several million screaming that reactors are unnecessarily dangerous (they're not; it took two fucking tsunamis to knock one building out), and an increased death toll in Japan.
What are your sources for this? I don't doubt you, but my journalistic training tells me to verify this information before spreading it to my other friends for the very reason you stated.

NHK Confirms that information. In addition, they are using seawater as a means to cool down the plant and the explosion that released the cesium and iodine into the air was actually the collapse of the structure. The core has not been breached. 3 people are being treated for radiation exposure, but they are not showing signs of illness.
Wow, the first part sound like the Tardis breaking in time :O Who new something so scary, and catastrophic could sound so beautiful at the same time? :O Also, this could literally be the sound of our sphere!
I think they had them, they just got taken out by the tsunami.
Yeah, they had them but they busted too.
Also, I was freaking out about this on Friday, but I got in contact with my host family at the end of the day and talked to other friends. Japan is toughing it out, and I think that while this is a tragedy, they are incredibly well prepared in the face of these sort of disasters.
I believe the Obi-Wan is actually the SI unit for measurement of moral high ground.
I guess it could work, but it would be much like the bel vs the decibel, since in day-to-day use you would probably stick with milliObi-Wans.
I'm not usually one to say things like this, but if someone were to shoot Glenn Beck dead I would not shed a single tear.
There's not that many people whose deaths would cause me to shed a tear, and I think the same is the case for you and everyone else on this forum. To suggest that Glenn Beck comes anywhere close is laughable.
He gave up any residue of sympathy I may have felt for him for being crazy and having a mom who killed herself, when he threatened a bunny with a chain saw. I don't know what to do with him, this awful, awful man.

Fuck.
EDIT: Less biased numbers here. No meltdown reported yet, and it is officially considered less worrying than Three Mile Island.
And an Article about what we know.

Seriously, though, they are toughing it out quite well considering the sheer level of destruction.
