  • Ads are basically some company's attempt to brainwash you and control you into doing something that is more beneficial to them than it is for you. It's incredibly strange that someone would intentionally subject themselves to more advertising.
Perhaps I've developed an immunity to it. 98% of the ads never even enter my brain, I automatically filter them out. What does get through are things I'm genuinely interested in.
  • What does get through are things I'm genuinely interested in.
What consciously gets through. The fact is that advertisements affect you even without you realizing it. That's why they are powerful, and that's why you block them with technology. Even if you never buy what they are selling, they take part of your brain.

What George is saying is that his brain is far superior to your's in which he can easily ignore such things while your brain cannot.

Exactly, I'm not understanding what's so difficult to understand about this.

I'd say far superior since he's part of the forums, the crew, and he does have a degree, oh yeah and he drives a stick shift. So that definitely makes him vastly superior to you pussies that can only drive automatic.

  • I need adblock because I connect to the internet using a 3G modem. Pages load significantly slower for me if they contain ads. Unfortunately, 3G is really the only option where I live; I can't even get DSL.
  • For the record, I'm fully in George's camp as well. Being a Mac guy, I just use plain old Safari, nothing special added on or plugged in. The only reason I have Firefox or Chrome at all is for testing purposes (being a web developer and all). Ads don't bother me. Most of the time, I don't even notice them. And if I do notice them, it's like, "Oh, alright," and move on. If you honestly can't ignore ads when they're not in your direct field of vision or if you allow yourself to be "brainwashed" by them, then you just have a severe lack of focus. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, I just don't have that problem.

Why the fuck are people taking my not using adblock as some kind of personal attack?
It's not just that. The other shit you've posted in this thread in addition to not using ads that make you come off as computer illiterate.
Don't you have something better to do with your time than rant about how I'm not using my computer correctly?
I'm on Spring break...so no. Once Monday rolls around and classes start, I will have better things to do with my time. Plus if I can help one person use their computer more efficiently, that's all the better. You're just too stubborn to give a shit. Oh well. *shrug*

I was referring to the collective of those who can't. You're cool then. But not as cool because you don't win at Dominion. ^___~ Once you beat Jeremy, Lyddi, and myself in a game, then you will be UBER! :P

I paid $20,000 for my car. Motherfucker better do the shifting for me.

How much does an F1 car cost again? Though those have the rather awesome paddle shifters...

I'm actually an IT professional. So thanks, but no thanks. I think you're mistaking my raging at Scott and general lack of care about which browser is best for something it isn't.

Yes, but that's an application that makes sense for it. BONUS - You can manually shift gears in an F1 car - they have clutch levers on the steering wheel which are usually used to declutch while in the pits, but can be used for shifting if necessary(though they almost never are).
Also, Good luck to you trying to find an F1 driver who can't drive a stick.

Though, Honestly, it doesn't matter. If you want to get your vehicle from A to B, get an Automatic. If you want to learn how drive a car, get a stick. Yes, That's right - if you can't drive a stick, then you're barely, barely able to drive, and probably shouldn't be trusted in anything more powerful than a Reliant Regal. If that.

Highly doubtful. You might think those ads aren't entering into your brain at all, but that is highly unlikely. Sure, you might not consciously think about them at all, but that doesn't mean your brain doesn't expend any effort on them, and it doesn't mean the ads have no effect on you.

People should learn to drive stick to just know it. You never know when there might be a need for it, like Morse code.

Stop poo pooing on my awesome theory! :P
  • There are a couple of sites I turn Adblock off on, mostly because I don't find their sites particularly annoying and I feel like I should let them get some money from my visit. However, these sites are few and far between.
I do this, and also click them, with sites like cinemassacre or certain youtube channels.

    Andrew- that gif is awesome.
    I'm actually an IT professional.
I have a slightly hard time believing that given you said you don't like updating software when it comes out (which, as Scott already pointed out, makes you vulnerable to old bugs and security holes), you seriously believe that adblock plus has too many false positives to make it worth using (protip: it doesn't), and you also don't believe that ads can subliminally message you...You just seem really ignorant about all this.
What kind of IT work is it?

I don't like jumping on new versions (unless it's something I really want like a new version of android), I'm very quick to update my software that I use regularly.

    Thanks for the "pro" tip.

I just don't give a fuck. Ads are a part of everyday life.
You just seem really ignorant about all this.
That based on your expert opinion?
What kind of IT work is it?
    Nothing I'm allowed to discuss.

    Thanks for the "pro" tip.
You realize that "protip" is just a 4chan expression that people use when they're talking about obvious things? I'm not calling myself a pro by any means. Lol.
I just don't give a fuck. Ads are a part of everyday life.
I turn ads off on the internet. I don't watch TV (I watch TV shows on DVDs, Netflix, etc). I don't listen to the radio (mp3 players FTW)...as such, I see/hear very, very few ads on a day to day basis. Feels good man.
That based on your expert opinion?
    Based on extremely simple observations...T_T
    Nothing I'm allowed to discuss.
    Riiiiiiight...

I question your ability to question. It's generally known that, in enterprise environments, many sysadmins hesitate to update software immediately unless there are known big security problems. Just as we wait for months or years before changing OSs, we may wait a while before updating software en masse. On our personal systems, sure, we might go for the newest shiny, but that's just personal preference.

I'm pretty sure George is security cleared, if that helps to convince you.

Sometimes people's jobs require confidentiality. Doesn't mean they are lying about them.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, but weren't we only talking about our personal systems in this thread?

I was just being a douche. I'm convinced. And I do realize that confidential jobs don't mean people are lying about them.
  • I was just being a douche.
    I noticed and I don't appreciate it.
  • To bring this a little more back on track...does anyone know how to check updates for plugins in FF4? Before FF4, you could just click "check for updates" like you could with add-ons, but now I can't seem to figure out if that button is there anymore...

Go to the Firefox menu. The click add-ons. Then there will be a gear icon in the top right.
  • I saw that, but does that check updates for everything, or just add-ons? By the looks of it not bringing you to that plugin update webpage that they used to bring you to, I assumed that the gear only checks updates for the add-ons.
  • So, I'm noticing whenever I have multiple tabs & windows open and running Netflix, there is some lag. When I run Netflix on Chrome and FF4 for my internet browsing, no lag.

    Go fig.
