Deus Ex: Human Revolution

So I'm going to whine about the controls.

Holy shit are the shooting and cover mechanics frustrating. I"ve played for ~1 hour but I've probably only seen 15min of the game because

1. it feels like a chimpanzee is swinging from the barrel of my gun when I aim (using mouse and keyboard)
2. it takes a fucking age for the game to load after you die
3. the game is gleefully ignorant of these things and kills you in like 3 shots

Also, when you are in cover, you can't pop out into iron sights (like in every cover based FPS in the last 3 years), instead you have to move in the direction of the edge you want to emerge from and it forces you to shoot over the shoulder (still no iron sites). To make maters worse, you can blind fire, but when you pop out of cover your cursor moves so you can't line up shots and pop out, resulting in you having to fight with the laggy cursor to line up your shot, resulting in you getting hit a bunch of times and having to hide for 10+ seconds while you auto heal.

Seriously, Mass Effect 2 had snappier and better cover and shooting controls.

I'm actually considering lowering the difficulty to easy and plugging in a gamepad. It seems like Eidos lied when they said that PC was the place to play (unless they think gamepad is how people play on PC).

  • I don't like the original Deus Ex. Got it cheap on Steam, it's not really very playable. No interest in the new one.
  • The shooting was shit in the first Deus Ex as well, but it was fairly optional (since Deus Ex wasn't a shooter, it was a first person RPG with shooting); you could approach a situation from any angle, decide on your plan of attack and engage... or not. You also had the option to avoid, stealth or hack the environment.

So far all I've seen it a hallway with a series of frustrating chest-high-wall gun fights with no side routes or options which is super disappointing considering how free and open the Statue of Liberty section of the first Deus Ex was (aka the first level). Hopefully I can just get used to their crazy mechanics and it becomes more open after this intro scene.

But I gotta say, its making a pretty shitty first impression.

You could actually make it through the game only killing one or two people, or if you take advantage of exploits, you can make a no-kill run.

You need the HD pack, probably need to tweek the audio and a 3rd party loader.

Maybe we should start a PC input standard test like THX is for cinema audio.
    -Raw mouse input as standard.
    -Hold to zoom option.
    -Begin phasing out inverted mouse.
-Reasonable variations in mouse sensitivity for zoomed versus unzoomed.

More focus on fast aiming and movement and less mandatory iron-sight headshots would be a plus.

With a digital release, why can't you release at the same time for the whole world and not screw over Europe with another week of waiting, I see you on Steam, Y U NO PLAY!

This seems at odds at what I have read around the net, The Escapist and Kotaku both loved it and noted that it was quite open.... I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow to see.

I remember trying to play when the game was a few years old, and the controls made me want to put a fist through a wall. I could never understand the attraction some people had to the game. From reviews, it sounds like they changed absolutely nothing about the abysmal controls, giant cone of fire, etc. which made me hate the first one.
  • I'm going to play it and find out for myself. I mean, Christ, I played through invisible war, and it cannot possibly be worse than that.

You can change your controls in the first game, and if you don't want a giant cone of fire than just specialise in weapons. If you want to be about all out confrontation than go ahead.

I'm waiting out on Human Revolution to see how things will pan out. There seems to be some good and some bad and I'm hoping it'll be patched up quickly. I especially can't stand games where the aiming feels sluggish or jittery like in Duke Nukem Forever or supposedly reported in Human Revolution.

Everything I read about it makes it sound more and more like a turd. I never asked for that.

Plus, isn't it only like 10 hours long?

Wasn't there a recent article about how 90% of gamers never get to the end of any given game?

I played Human Revolution for two hours last night and got to say I was quite happy with it. I did find the cone of fire to be a bit difficult to deal with at first but not more than any other modern game. The mouse movement wasn't jittery for me either.

It is quite a cinematic game and I am enjoying that the most.

I quickly found out that frontal assaults are BAD. You may think there are just two guys there but their friends will come and help and fast. It really does see best to skulk around and take them out silently one by one.

Maybe after I level up a bit and I can get more accurate with my weapon I'll go back to murdering everyone.

You must be reading a limited selection of reviews, because it's sitting on a steady 89 out of 100 on Metacritic. I can't speak to the quality of the game, but the majority of feedback is positive.

Though, that said, doubtless we can find someone that doesn't like the game who will claim it's all cash for comment.

Eidos Montreal, the developer, put it at 25 Hours on a straight-and-narrow main plot run. They also say that if you investigate much of the side stuff, you can easily push 35.

  • After fixing the controls and playing through to first real mission I feel like I'm definitely going to want to play through this game more than once.
  • Yeah the intro mission is pretty harsh with the focus on the bust in there and murder everyone thing.
  • if you don't want a giant cone of fire than just specialise in weapons.
Wow, a mistaken pick for "then" vs "than" but in the non-usual way. This is a rare thing on these forums!

Generally volume reviews are not what I use for evaluating something. I participate in a couple of communities and I usually go by the testimonials of people who've enjoyed the same games as I have, or, more specifically, enjoyed the same thing about games as I have. Some of the stuff mentioned, like the load times or the effective inflexibility of what are supposed to be valid, different approaches to solving a situation turns me off. I won't know for sure until I play it, but a demo would have been nice.

35 hours is a good time, and I tend to run long on stuff so that doesn't sound too bad.
  • The costume design is crazy. I heard they actually got a fashion person to do the clothing as opposed to your typical video game artists. Kinda a cool approach.
Looked at it briefly at work yesterday, and it's pretty interesting. My coworkers are all playing it.
kills you in like 3 shots
That's totally Dues Ex for you. It's that kind of game.
  • I'm astonished you're hearing such bad things. It feels exactly like a Deus Ex to me, at least from the first five hours. There's air ducts everywhere, there's five different wants to get everyone's email password, there's racist caricature bums on the street, there's inventory tetris. In fact, thus far the only thing missing is that your shots go where you want them to without having to level up your pistol skill and I haven't (yet) heard "Saw someone... guy in a coat." To the former I say good riddance, to the latter: "...probably just some homeless guy..."
  • Im planning on picking up the game as soon as I can. It looks really good game and visually appeasing Also to all the nay sayers. You have robotic arms. Robotic arms that you can stab people with. They are robotic arms, that alone is a selling point.
  • The costume design is crazy. I heard they actually got a fashion person to do the clothing as opposed to your typical video game artists. Kinda a cool approach.
Check out the clothes they made from the game, if anything confirms that they have fashion people, this is it. Finally some game clothes that won't make you look like some basement dwelling man-child. God I want that coat so bad.
  • I am really happy with the game so far. The choice of how to play any given mission really sold it for me. After I finished the first mission I wanted to reload it again and try it over doing things differently. Things did not work out exactly as I had planned and I regret some of my decisions but I decided to keep playing and fix all the mistakes on a second run through. Any game that invokes these kinds of feelings really has me sold.

The load times after deaths are absurd. During one I got up and made a sandwich and was back in time to play. Also some of the cut scene's look a bit shoddy. The story is top rate so far can't wait to see where it takes me.
  • Good to see it's not terrible. I'll put it on the wishlist for a sale.
  • Shamus from Twenty Sided Tale is usually a pretty reliable judge for me on whether or not I'll like something, and he gives it a big thumbs up, so I think I'm going to have to give it a try. I was a fan of the original, although I didn't play it until years after everyone else was done talking about it.
  • I'm pulling my hair out with impatience waiting for this to finally be cracked so I can start playing. I already downloaded the .iso I just need the dang crack. I'm usually pretty patient about this stuff but I've been anticipating this game for a long time now.

I am seriously considering buy that coat over the reversible corduroy blazer/smoking jacket I've been eyeing.

    Goddamn that coat is sexy.
  • I would advise everyone against buying that coat - a coat like that for the listed price is going to be a cheaply made costume-quality piece instead of an actual coat.
  • edited August 2011
Yeah, I'm sticking with the smoking jacket/blazer. But damned if I don't still want that coat.

EDIT: Apparently the company has done some well-received MGS stuff. Looks legit.
