GeekNights 20111006 - Shoes and Handbags

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the issues and debates surrounding proper footwear and matching bags. But first, they terk our JERBS (that we refuse to do in the first place), and funny looking shoes are about as effective as goggles.

    Geez, Scott. Way to be sexist this episode! At least you caught yourself at the end, but come on. A word that describes ~50% of the human species is not an insult. It's about as silly as a parrot looking at another parrot and saying "You're green! Baahahahaha, you're GREEN!"

    I know you are capable of more creative insults than that. But if you are hard up for good way to trash Rym that doesn't involve his sex or gender, I recommend going Shakespearean.

    So what is wrong with having a number of different shoes? I have my snow boots, my rain boots, and a few pairs of regular boots. Rym was like "you have too many boots!" However, those snowboots were super useful in deep snow and the rainboots came in handy last weekend when we were in the orchard. Think of shoes as the female tie - they typically use them as accessories.

    And why is it that "girly" is an insult that typically is used negatively and "manly" aspects are considered positive? It says something about our culture.

    If I was a girl and someone said something I was doing was girly, I would not take that as a negative. You generally insult people by saying they are things that they are not. For example, telling a non-smelly person they are smelly, or jews might insult each other saying they are acting like goyim.

    I don't consider being called girly an insult, but I am insulted when people tell me I'm acting "gay." That's probably a problem, but it is just honest, unfortunately.

    It's insulting because they meant it as an insult, not because it's a valid one. I think it's really more of a problem with our culture. When people use "gay" as an insult, they honestly do not understand that (or why) they're offending more than the person the one they're calling gay.

    Well yeah, but I also have been insulted when people question my sexuality in a more honest fashion. That's kind of a problem, as I understand it's a valid question, but I just dislike the idea that people would use stereotypes to legitimately question whether or not I liked girls.

    Yes, but as you said, if you were a GUY and they said that, typically that's taken as fighting words. "You throw like a girl," etc.
    The adjective "girly" in our culture: Weak, emotional, passive
    The adjective "manly" in our culture:Strong, logical, aggressive
    See what I mean? Really think about what people are trying to say about women when they use "girly" as an pejorative term.
    If girly is not an insult to girls, why would it be an insult to men? Why would men not want to be girly?

    This episode was very funny. I like how Scott immediately takes a position, and Rym rips it apart trivially.

    For the record, I have many pair of shoes. Also I have hiking boots and boots that are good for snow in Berlin. They are different boots. The snow boots would have killed my feet hiking these past few days, and the hiking boots are too cold for the snow. It's very simple.

    While I agree that in general a person doesn't NEED many pairs of shoes. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing. Me? I primarily have 3 pairs of shoes, a pair of Keen sandals for warm weather, a pair of tennis/skate shoes for colder weather or when I absolutely need a shoe that fits tightly, and a pair of dress shoes. Beyond that the only other shoes I can think I might need are maybe a pair of cold weather hiking boots as the Keens cover pretty much all warm weather hiking.

    Also How do people feel about skate (vans/air-walks) shoes for general wear? I find that they're more comfortable overall than just getting a pair of sneakers. They also seem to wear out more slowly than sneakers.
    Lastly screw hiking boots. I find most shoes uncomfortable and restrictive and boots really are just worse. The ankle support has never seemed like a particularly useful feature, and the water proofing has limited use.

    If girly is not an insult to girls, why would it be an insult to men? Why would men not want to be girly?
    Well, That's the thing, really. Most things are insulting to someone, somewhere. Saying someone knows how to drink like a champion might be quite an insulting insinuation, in a mosque or a Jehovah's witness temple, but a compliment in a barroom. Axel and I, we're bros, don't mind admitting we're a bit girly, and it doesn't bother it by itself as an insult - but what would bother us is that someone is trying to insult us, no matter what words they use.

    No, I said it's stupid to buy roller skates if you are not a specialist. If you aren't going to be rollerskating all the time, you should just be renting them the one time every few years you go to the roller rink. Just like you shouldn't buy your own bowling ball unless you go bowling frequently.

    There are jobs that need to be done in this world, such as picking food. It's not possible to pay the people who do this job a large amount of money. Imagine if we paid someone $60,000 a year for picking vegetables. The price of vegtables would skyrocket and people who have lower paying jobs wouldn't be able to eat. Someone has to do this work. Americans don't have jobs. Here there were some jobs offered, and they pussied out because it was too hard. Mexicans did the work without complaint.

    No, that's not what I mean. How do you decide who gets how many onions? Robots are doing all the work, so nobody has any money because nobody has a job. There aren't enough onions for everyone to have as many onions as they want. You need some system to determine where the onions go and how many go to each person that wants them.

    That's more an issue with Illegal immigrants not having a standing because the moment they complain, they're going to get punted back to whence they came from (or, if they're in the UK, given a care package and a free flat...) than it is with, say, Percy McDegree having legitimate hangups about spending time and body to pick vegetables for dickybird when he already broke his body getting a degree (been there, done that, still have the IBS).

    Like I said, it's nice to say "Oh you unemployed guy, go to shit job" when you're in the position of having a nice job and being in the enviable situation of being afluant.

    He actually hired legal immigrants and paid them the same he was going to pay the Americans.

    There's the separate problem that our society doesn't value certain things enough to pay what they cost to actually make, living on the subsidy of neo-liberal global economic disparities. But that work at that pay for that area was not that bad.

    Among people who did have a head start, or people who do have skills, I've seen too many who fail solely due to not networking and not being willing to move where the jobs are. See the people who stay in their hometown or college town over striking out to find work.
