Yeah the internet is so full of butthurt and fear right now. I don't see a FB acquisition stopping developers from making great gaming experiences on the Rift, or preventing consumers from buying an eventual retail version. In fact, the resources will probably make that retail version better.
And yet, Front page of reddit in a default sub right now, "HOW TO CANCEL YOUR OCULUS RIFT PRE-ORDER"
And plenty of comments about how facebook has bought companies and run them into the ground, and how everything they touch turns to shit. Like..Instagram I guess? Another commonly cited one is Whatsapp, and how it's competitor had a surge in popularity after the acquisition was announced - of course, nobody mentioning that this occurred before Facebook had a chance to do anything at all, and the cause of that was the same paranoiacs causing the grand furoar right now, rushing away from Zuckerberg's big blue beastie. It was 100% fine once that nonsense settled down, though.
I'm finding the shitstorm around this quite entertaining. A lot of entitled opinions being thrown around. "WE FUNDED THIS PROJECT AND THIS IS HOW THEY REPAY US?"
No, sorry, you donated to a project so they could build prototypes as proof-of-concept. You are owed literally nothing beyond Kickstarter rewards. You got to be an early adopter of a shiny gadget.
Not to say that Facebook will somehow be some innovative haven for the thing - but hey, you never know.
Yup. Taking VC money means that when Facebook comes calling with cash and shares, the company WILL say yes. The only reason they would say no is if they think they can get 2x money and shares from Google or Microsoft or Amazon or Apple or other.
I think it's really funny how butthurt people are over Facebook buying Oculus Rift. It's not that surprising, really. Facebook is a company and they're, logically, trying to diversify their assets. The Oculus Rift has a ton of potential for success but they already face competition with Sony developing a similar peripheral for the PS4. With Facebook's financial backing, they can now really play on the main gaming stage instead of in the ephemera of PC gaming.
I think it's really funny how butthurt people are over Facebook buying Oculus Rift.
Even funnier - they're saying basically whatever they like as a factual account of what will happen, and then when people from Oculus (mostly Palmer Luckey that I've seen - by the by, best name since Carlos Slim) come and say "No, that's not the case, we're not going to do that" they dismiss them as a facebook shill, and try to say that they "have to say that, because facebook owns you now."
People don't understand Oculus more than likely gave up direction of the company when they took VC.
More like definitely gave up direction. They took something like $75 million, right? Even if Kickstarter pledges were "investment" in the traditional sense, the proportional ownership would be so low as to be essentially non-existent.
What really amazes me is the degree to which people assume Kickstarter is something that it never pretended to be. You donate to see someone make a product, and you get rewards for doing that. What do you think someone's going to do with that product once it's made? They'll pitch it to actual investors so they can make actual money.
I'd like to see how many people would turn down a buyout package like that. We'd know who all the idiots are.
I think the anger is more that if they are owned by a publicly traded company, people are afraid the desires of stockholders will be more important than the "creative vision." But, only time will tell if that's true.

People don't understand a lot of things, especially the vocal majority of the Internet.
