So he's applied for asylum in Ecuador. I thought that might be the best idea from the very beginning of all of this. They've protected Assange for a long time now.
Kind of amused that his flight path is nearly every supposed anti-American baddie: China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela.
Venezuela's a bad idea. As out of character as it seems, the US has an extradition treaty with them.
But if he can get asylum, it may not matter. Generally, by granting you asylum, that country has voided any extradition treaty it has with your country of origin for your specific case.

Doesn't even have to be asylum. Most civilized countries for example have provisions in their constitution against the death penalty and will refuse extradition if it is reasonably certain that the person in question will be (or indeed already is) subject to charges that carry the death penalty.
I bet it's another trick. As soon as it is granted he'll turn up in Ecuador or somewhere.
Problem is, for him to go straight to Ecuador he's gotta fly through American airspace.
Not necessarily. For one thing, a Great Circle route to Ecuador (the most direct route on a globe) may not go through American airspace at all. If he's willing to go a complicated enough route, he can fly there while avoiding nearly every America-friendly country on the route. For example: Russia -> Iran -> Tanzania -> Congo ->Atlantic Ocean -> Venezuela -> Nicaragua -> Ecuador.
