The internet has sped up everything, including the integration of hillbilly-esque crackpots that were previously left out of the national conversation. I don't think the existence of all this crazy is new, it's just that it's all being unearthed and embraced by the Right, many of whom I suspect feel validated that someone shares what they secretly believed all along (but felt too marginalized to speak up about.)
Word salad up there. Oh well I can't be arsed fixing it.
I'm actually starting to get for real worried about this. I mean, this is pretty much down to the wire at this point.
Bleeeeeeeh.
If you ignore the news, your every day life will be largely unaffected. Even if it is affected, there is nothing you can do. Worrying about it is as worthless as worrying about the sun exploding. Just live your life and ignore this bullshit, just like I do.

Because engaged activism never works, just ask Gandhi, MLK, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, etc.
Engaged activism on the scale required to fix the crony capitalist nightmare of the United States isn't likely to work any time soon. Progressives are too busy angrily drawing dividing lines all over the place while the lockstep, patriarchal, sociopathic, religious Right chortles and bulldozes them all over.

Kind of hard to ask dead people. Clearly it worked so well for them, seeing as how they are dead now.
This isn't the issue to get worked up about. I mean, yes it sucks, but it's ultimately fruitless. No one who caused the shutdown benefits from it, so it can't be sustainable. The issues to get worked up about are the ones where bad things are being done and people are benefiting from it.
Gee, thanks. I guess I'll tell my colleagues, who are also furloughed, to not get worked up when we don't get paid next week. While it's ideal to have savings, not everyone does and has to currently live paycheck to paycheck and are the sole providers of their family.
It's a big deal for a lot of reasons. Lots of people aren't getting paid. Lots of shit ain't getting done. If people don't care, shady government folk get to keep being shady unchecked.
Yeah, I guess the default of the most stable currency and economic system in the world isn't worth getting worked up about. I mean, it's only the basis for the entire global economy.
That's why it'll never happen. They have to raise the debt ceiling otherwise the world's economy, not just ours, will take a gigantic hit.
Sure, any sane person would agree with you. But the suicide caucus fundamentally believes that a US default would not be a bad thing. They are true believers, which is why they are so dangerous. Boehner can barely put together a coherent message, let alone pass a semi-rational bill in the house. Don't say it will never happen, because the fanatics are trying their best to make it so.
The people making this happen are immune to all electoral pressure. They live in monster districts gerrymandered to be uncontestable except from the right.

Getting worked up will not change the situation in any way other than to make your lives even worse. Not only will you have no moneys, you will also feel like shit for no reason. I honestly don't know why you showed up to work for no pay. If I don't get paid, I don't work. If my employer is unable to pay my check, I find a new one immediately.

It's a big deal. But worrying and giving yourself stress will not change anything other than to make you feel like shit. There is literally nothing any of us can do to change the situation, even if we all team up and combine our powers.
If anyone comes up with a concrete plan of action that has a practical chance of resulting in significant and meaningful change, call me. I will help you out. Every idea I have ever had is infeasible, ineffective, and/or crazy.
An asteroid is going to hit the earth. We are doomed. Nothing we can do about it. It's in the hands of other people. Don't freak out, just enjoy the time we have left.
I want to apologize on behalf of the sane folk of Texas for the fact Ted Cruz is a senator. Not many Texans go to primaries (which I can't understand why) and the somewhat sane candidate lost. It was either him or a Democrat who couldn't win. >_< Damn this state.

You have an unsupported underlying assumption: that getting "worked up" necessarily makes your life "worse." This is not always the case.
Imagine I have 1000 points of "I FEEL AWESOME." I decide to spend 100 of these points, making my "I FEEL AWESOME" bank go down. Objectively worse, right?
But with those 100 points, I bought something like, I dunno, "BREW A BEER."
Later, I drink the beer. Share it around. Learn a new technique in the process. I gain 200 points of "I FEEL AWESOME."
Net result: +100 awesome points.
Sometimes, we take a temporary inconvenience or dip in comfort so that we can invest in something that will bring us a greater sense of accomplishment. Sometimes, we get "worked up" so that we can go out and actually do something about it.
It does not necessarily follow that stresses in life make things objectively worse, and there are whole swaths of scientific research into the positive effects of healthy stress.
You need more information before you deem any of this stress being expressed to be "unhealthy."
Technically you can get involved in campaings in other states, it's common in this day to have people from out of state do the campaigning in some cases. You can start donating money to the groups or candidates in other states to help get them elected. You can start getting involved in your local races in hope that one day you amass a small amount of political power.
The ability to placate/eliminate the stress and depression brought on by disempowerment by way of entertainment, labor etc. is actually really bad and shitty IMO and, along w/ generationally pervasive + aggressive individualism, is a big reason why I'd also say change is pretty unlikely, and that you might as well not have the stress in the first place.
Of course, the reason that he wants that to happen is because he's absolutely convinced that it's the fault of those filthy statists, Hillary Clinton and Obama.

Does that mean Rym's still getting paid when the Government shuts down for reals?
