What's going on with my computer? (The computer help thread)

  • I'm considering buying a few new hard drives and raiding it up. They're so cheap, and diskIO is actually the most significant performance bottleneck on my PC.
I wouldn't bother for that reason. I have my OS on a solid state drive now and it hasn't really pushed my computer to another level by any means. Maybe if you raid-0'd a couple SSD drives you could get some real speed, but that would be really pricey.

Video and audio editing, especially the former, are disk intensive. A RAID-0 would definitely boost my performance measurably, especially when editing multi-hour videos.

My OS is on an SSD already.
  • I'm probably going to add another drive soon just to hold all my media and documents. A 1TB drive is $60 now. Wrap your head around that shit.
  • I use an 80 gig drive for my os's, a 300 gig drive for my main storage, and a 250gig drive in a usb/esata dock for backups and storage of less important stuff. I pretty much see an OS as disposable now and I just reinstall anytime I have any serious problem. Its just easier. I'm probably going to buy a 1Tb drive or 2 when I have moneys.

How can I do this without destroying data on any of the partitions?
I'm pretty sure if you're in windows vista/7 you can just right click on the partition you want bigger and just select the amount you want extended and it just works. At least that's how its worked for me in the past.
  • I think that only works on partitions beside each other.

Partitions have to be one long block without interruptions. You could just make another NTFS partition in the space and throw any spare files into it to free up space on C: as a short term measure.

  • Alright, long story short I was installing Ubuntu on my Dell laptop from a livedisc. About halfway through I got an error telling me the installation had failed citing a disc error and recommending I clean it. So I turned the computer offr, cleaned the disc, put it back in and started the laptop.
When I tried to load the boot option screen it instead went to a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner. If I just turn it on and let it sit the same thing happens.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do?
  • Can you access the BIOS?
  • edited October 2010
    Yes

*Edit* changed the boot order in the BIOS and was able to boot off the live disc. Hopefully this install doesn't fail

  • Just so people are aware, it is possible nowadays to install Ubuntu from a USB stick. If you have a stick that is large enough (1GB), and your computer can boot from USB, then I highly recommend this method over optical discs.
  • So destructiod looks like arse on this laptop for some reason, it seems to want to load the font bold and with a crap-ass font, any help?

I know it isn't supposed to be like this (not bold for one thing) so can anyone think of anything that's causing it?

Search for and install a package called MSCoreFonts or similar, then restart your browser.

    MSCoreFonts
On a windows 7 PC and google returns MSCoreFonts as a linux thing. I understand the concept but nowhere links to a set, for legal reasons I figure.

  • Ah, I thought this was the Ubuntu guy from earlier. Have you tried pressing Ctrl+0 one the page.

Also, does it persist across pc reboots?

It does yes, but I've ran all the scans I run and the problem was on twitter's new settings and that undid itself a few days ago

Also Ctrl+0 1 only brings me to tab one.

    What browser are you using?

Oh, that was meant to say "on the page.".

Firefox, but the issue is on other browsers too.
  • Try Ctrl+F5. If that fails, go into options and find the way to clear the cache. It might be a cached CSS file goofed up somewhere.

If that fails, try Google, odds are that someone else will have the same problem.

Ok I'm back. I've been trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop and have had no luck. When I try to install from a live cd I can't advance past the "who are you?" screen. I entered my information, and the loading bar at the bottom says "ready when you are" but the forward button never lights up for me to be able to click on it. I've tried two dvds, and both work fine when run the trial, but neither will take me past this screen. I also tried using a usb stick, but can't boot from that at all.

  • Try download the alternate install ISO. It's all text based but it's a good backup for when a PC doesn't like the normal Ubuntu disc.
  • Just an additional on my issue: turns out I had a busted version of Helcavna Nevue from my old days of making adult swim cards for my anime club from Uni so getting rid of that sorted it.
  • Ah shit, I had a friend that happened to. Should've remembered.

Eventually it took poking in the CSS files to see what fonts it was picking.
  • Any ideas on what would cause files to get consistently corrupted (Had to re-download Batman Arkham Asylum a few times and it still doesn't work, several other games won't install due to corrupted data, chkdsk.exe finds corrupted stuff very frequently) on a brand new custom-built system? I can post my specs if you think it'll help.

Sounds to me like a new hard drive is in order.
Driver issues are another significant possibility, and so a windows reinstall should probably be the first thing to try.

  • My windows 7 computer often hangs while logging a user off, and I have to restart the computer.

Already did that twice. Do you think it'd be easy enough to RMA?
  • All of this stuff is downloaded. Is it possible that the built-in NIC is shit?
  • Doubt it's the connection, Steam is probably verifying the chunks of data as they come in.

Have you noticed the hard drive light stalling? The HDD light stays on and any program trying to access the drive freezes up.

Even though when I "verify integrity of game cache" it finds ~30 files to replace each time?

Only time I've noticed this is when installing games from an .iso, just before the installation gives me an error message about corrupt files.
    For example:
    ---------------------------
    Prototype(TM) Error
    ---------------------------
Error 1335.The cabinet file 'Art.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.
    ---------------------------
    Abort Retry Ignore
    ---------------------------
