  • Started Reading Ajin and watched the first couple of episodes when I realized the anime started airing. I like it, though its a bit torture-porny at times but it doesn't dwell on that too long. Kind of reminds me of Parasyte in that "I'm a thing and people and government agencies are out there trying to find the things and sometimes I have to fight other things" sort of way.
  • Started watching Utena yesterday. Nanami cracks me up!

Love the end theme, I almost forget how much it sounds like 'catwalk' music.

  • Haven't watched a whole lot of anime in the last year or two, but I'm catching up with some stuff.

Sometimes you watch anime and find a hidden masterpiece. Sometimes you watch anime and you find just a ridiculous piece of garbage. Prison School is definitely of the later. Gratuitous, perverse, and you should probably feel guilty for watching it, but hilarious and hilariously stupid.

I've also recently watched Himouto! Umaru-chan after hearing about it on AWO. Truly, the setup of the series makes things appear worse than it is, but is still not really a whole lot to write home about. I still couldn't get over the fact that the title character is the ultimate otaku-dream-character. Not only your beautiful perfect little sister, but also the mascot character that is too much of a lazy slob to take care of itself. Only thing missing was her not being quite human (i.e. a robot, alien or clone).

The first season of Nisekoi. I really like the manga which is a bit of a guilty pleasure as a romantic comedy. It is really funny though. SHAFT did well with the first season though I think they've cranked a little bit too much on the fanservice. They stuck to the most important story points and brought them across in a well paced manner. And holy shit the backgrounds. Some of it is a bit too detailed and nonsensical, but if you didn't mind the fact that the school building in Puella Magic Madoka Magica was basically entirely made of glass you shouldn't mind the design student fantasies in Nisekoi's animation either.

The first two episodes of Osomatsu-san. Not sure what to make of it yet because the first episode was just such a WTF. I'll see how it develops.
  • I dug the first season of Nisekoi, though the further along it gets the more it devolves. The second season was just too unbearable to get through the first episode of it.

Manga takes longer, but still devolves.
  • good to know!
  • Finished watching Utena. I'm kind of speechless, in a good way.

Not comparing the narrative, does anyone else see any similarities to Big O? Really love the music!

There's much to say about this anime, I can't articulate it all. I'm glad I finally watched it. Definitely see the homages made in Kill la Kill more clearly.

How is it that I cannot for the life of me force myself to sit down nowadays and watch actual high quality anime like Yurikuma, or New Lupin, or Death Parade -- and yet I have no issue watching garbage idol and magical girl anime by the bucketload? It's the equivalent of scarfing down 15 packs of Skittles in lieu of eating dinner. I think have a problem.

Anyway, I'm watching Pretty Rhythm, PriPara, and Aikatsu. Let's see which one keeps me goin' longest. Aikatsu seems the most well executed so far, as these kinds of shows go.

  • Found Erased from the Fast Karate forums. Mostly a thriller with some supernatural stuff (like he can sort of travel through time but I don't think he has control of it). The thriller mystery aspect has me hooked though.
  • Definitely enjoying watching Erased also. I like the protagonist also. Wonder if he is going to get others involved to help him out. Or will he have to be on his own.
  • So anybody else seen Pani Poni Dash and is watching Osomatsu-san? I ask because the opening for Osomatsu-san and the first opening for PPD strike me as very similar. Unfortunately I can't find a video on YouTube of the PPD opening I mean (at least not the original).
  • I enjoyed Himouto! Umaru-chan. It wasn't the most amazing show every but its just a fun slice of life. While I can see the character being a little pandering in design, I'm really glad it didn't turn into some really creepy moe thing which it definitely could have.
  • Started Juan Punch Man. Good shit.
  • Started watching Patlabor again. Easily one of my favorite anime of all time, especially the OVA.
  • Flying Witch is great to watch right before you go to bed.

I decided to start up Utena a while ago, like 1-2 weeks

I've been doing an episode/night ish. For like the first few episodes I wasn't sure if it was for me because, there wasn't a whole lot happening at first and during jgeeknigts presents, it's just a bunch of ScRym saying pay attention to everything. As it moved though, the show pretty definitively says stuff is actually behind the curtains here and became a whole bunch more interesting.

I'm at the point now where there's no more geeknights presents. Feels like baby bird leaving the nest, in a stupid sorta way. The shadow girls are more impenetrable now without the benefit of someone who knows more than me explaining what they're on about.

All that said, though, 10/10. Also the music which at first I hated, really grew on me. I caught myself humming the battle theme and was, just kinda like, why was I hating on this before?

  • Did Luluco just commit a hate crime?
  • Just keep watching Utena all the way through: don't wait for us.

You'll hit several "holy shit, what the FUCK?!" moments along the way. It'll escalate and escalate. You'll start learning about witches and cars and dark secrets. Let it all wash over you, and appreciate what meaning you can make of it before we explain anything.

You'll have to watch the whole show again anyway. ;)
  • Oh, I have every intention of keeping moving. Faster now, if anything because an episode of Utena is shorter than an episode of Utena + an episode of Geeknights Presents. It's just, it's a different experience, there's like 5 things per episode that I'm like: I know there's some deeper meaning there, and if there was just one or two, I'd sit contemplatively stroking my chin until I had it figured out, but there's too much, I just kinda have to accept there are things I won't understand for a while.
  • We could do a whole second run of GeekNights Presents if we assume we can spoil the whole show. There are things in even the first episodes that, well, might blow your mind.

If you want an example of this, listen to the sound that Anthy hears in the On the Night of the Ball episode when she's lost in the crowd. Listen really closely to it, and think about what's happening in that scene.

You'll hear that sound again in the last episodes.
  • This week on Flying Witch: stranger danger and casual sexism.

I really like this show. They give the little girl the best faces. How is she not already a meme?
  • I don't know if I'll be able to catch up on the C-Roll queue before PAX. Might end up watching ep 2-3/4 of all these shows next week.

Spring Fairy breaking all preconceived ideas of what a Spring Fairy should look like.
  • The studio behind Attack on Titan is producing a Star Fox animated short.

    Watch it here on Wednesday.
  • STFU Slippy!
  • Enemy shields analyzed
  • AAAAAAnd Saionji's back. I had shit to do tonight but that's all on hold until I find out what his deal with Wakaba is and why dude who's crushing on wakaba is unworthy of dueling, and why wakaba is almost certainly pulling a sword out of dude who is crushing on her's chest... maybe Saionji's chest. This show, man, this show.
  • Wait for Saionji to bust out the BBQ.
  • Couldn't really make it through the second episode of Stray Dogs. It's just leaning over into stupid a bit too much.
