  • Just got back from Heathen Fest. We missed Kivimetsen Druidi, but managed to catch Vried, Alestorm, Belphegor, and Eluveite. Vried was lackluster, Alestorm was a hell of a lot of fun, Belphegor is now one of my favorite live acts (really, go see them; it's worth it), and Eluveite was pretty good. Overall, a B+ show.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing Nile with Abigail Williams. I predict sheer chaos.
  • I'm seeing Megadeth and Machine head on the 25. Don't know much from Machine head, since I have neglected them over other bands. Any tracks I should check out?

A metal solo contest with my and one of my friends. I'm the blonde one with the short hair. We're slowly but surely forming a band.

    You don't/can't.

    Not here, anyway.

  • New Krallice album just leaked. You know what to do.
Eh, it isn't doing as much for me as the self-titled.

Ah fuck. I guess I'll have to edit it for Youtube length.

    Agreed.
  • Still processing, quality will improve in a bit.

  • Sloppy riff salads are not welcomed. If I were you, I'd practice with a metronome. Also, please uses different sweep picking shapes. Your typical minor shape will only get you so far, maybe you should try some diminished arpeggios, those are popular in metal.

Pick up John Petrucci's Rock Discipline, it'll help you tons.

I didn't have a half stack until almost 10 years of playing guitar...

I have the DVD, but I do need to pick up a metronome. I'm not really well-versed in music theory, that's my next goal.
  • There are a myriad of online metronomes.

    Also, this.

Practice your riffs without distortion nor effects, once you can get them perfectly clean there, then you move onto distortion.

Thank you. If anyone else has more advice, it's very appreciated and welcomed.
  • Keep me posted, I'm interested in your progress.

I know someone who got a Marshall Full Stack after 3. Talk about unnecessary gear fetishism.

    It's called G.A.S.

    Guitar/gear acquisition syndrome. =P

I have bad cases of gas every now and then...

Indeed, I have my eye on a Schecter 8-string at the moment. It has a great value, and it's almost too good not to pick up.
  • As long as you take care of it, I once saw a kid back in high school smash a guitar just to show that he could trivially get a new one, I was about ready to behead him. It was a nice guitar too...
  • I don't know if this should go on the fail of the day thread but...

I quickly recorded something using a Line 6 spider II, just for fun. The tone is less than presentable.

    Beware of the tone.

I just realized about this thread...no one has talked about Testament.

Does anyone else enjoy their newest album? I personally really like it even though there are a few iffy tracks. It really feels like they move between metal genres. Absolutely love this song in particular.

My housemate is a Metal Guitarist, and When I moved in here, my room had more Marshalls than the Witness Protection Program, along with a big sound desk and more pedals than a church organ. I know exactly what you mean.

Oh, man this song is awesome. KindaReally reminds me of Metallica.
  • It really feels like they move between metal genres.
Hm, I don't think so. It's pretty much just balls-out thrash. Mind you, it's excellent thrash, and for once it's not another goddamn Bay-area band. I'm looking at you, Warbringer.
    Really reminds me of Metallica.
I get a stronger Megadeth vibe. Metallica was always a grand, epic band, closer to power metal than anything else. Megadeth is a more focused and aggressive band, though I always thought they were weak overall.

Metallica close to Power Metal? Nah. They had their moments when they were like hard rock, but I'd classify them as just heavy metal now. I don't think Metallica really dives much into any subgenre.

I'd agree that Testament is more like Megadeth as they are more aggressive and fast. Speaking of that, I should get to downloading Endgame...

Puppets and Justice were pretty damn close to power metal albums. They've carried that "epic" feeling throughout all of their albums.

In any event, I need to get that Testament album. That's the kind of thrash I like.

I've also heard that Endgame is not so good.

I do agree with the "epic feeling" you get from Metallica. Their concerts like that too.

With Endgame, I'm seeing a lot of critical praise on it, so I'll have to find out for myself.
  • Speaking of 'epic feelings'...
Fuck, I want to see those guys so much. They're #3 in my list of must-see live acts.

Because what Mario really needed was obviously more double bass...

  • Any suggestions for good prog metal? One of my friends is really likes it but I can't get into it for the life of me.
  • What music do you listen to normally? Tell me in bands, not genres.
