Honestly I doubt that would help since I barely listen to any metal or anything close to it beyond some classic rock stuff. I guess I don't really want to know any specific bands, I'm more curious about what the appeal is. For example, the other day my friend told me to listen to this song. He said it was one of his current favorite songs, and that he liked the solo at the end. After listening to it I told him that frankly, it was pretty boring. Am I going to feel that way about all prog metal, or is it just this song?
Alright. To pick a few, I like Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Beck, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, Deerhunter, DJ Shadow, and Caribou. Those are pretty much all drawn from songs I've thumbs up-ed on Pandora, so it should give you a good idea. And of course I like classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, and other stuff like that.
Oh yes, to update my opinions on Megadeth's Album Endgame?
I'm really torn on how I feel with it. There's an equal amount of great songs (44 Minutes, Headcrusher, Bodies, How The Story Ends) to bad songs (1,320, Bite The Hand, The Right To Go Insane, ...Sealed With A Kiss).
And while I'd admit that it's technically more impressive, Mustaine's thrash guitar is still amazing and his new guitarist is also great, it lyrically feels like it went down a notch. I know his lyrics are intentionally like that, but really it feels like they are just kind of juvenile in compared to his others, or more so. The Hardest Part of Letting Go is really, really was lame despite the awesome solo at the end of the song.
I've always thought that Megadeth spent too much time chasing Metallica. Dave stuck himself in Hetfield's shadow, and he's never been able to let go enough to get out of it. That's why they'll always be the inferior band; Metallica does their thing, and Dave follows behind.

I wouldn't call them inferior to Metallica, I'd put them equally. But to me, they have different cons to distinct them. They are just way too similar in their career.

Really? I think you need to really listen to more Metallica. I'm not saying that Megadeth is bad - they're a pretty solid band - but Metallica is really in a different league altogether.
I do think Dave is more technically proficient than Kirk Hammett, but Hammett's soloing always seems to fit the music, so I can forgive the lack of totally awesome shredding. Megadeth also has Chris Broderick, so the level of technicality in their music has really grown. However, Metallica writes a better song; they've written some of the best riffs in all of metal, and they add the right level of grit to make the music approachable.
I will say that Metallica are definitely studio musicians; they need time to sit down and polish something to get it perfect. Their live show isn't sloppy, but it's definitely rough and they do make mistakes. Of course, that just makes everything seem all the more approachable (which is why they're amazing as entertainers), but every now and then I'd love to hear a burst of raw creativity from them.
I bought Addicted by Devin Townsend, I absolutely love it, once again Mr. Townsend makes something completely different than his previous works. Supercrush! stands out for me with it's earworm chorus and hidden clever use of auto-tune.

I didn't know this was out now. I will make short work of acquiring this.
The pre-order bonuses were really good for the price you were paying, but I ended up not getting it due to lack of money at that very moment.
I found out about the pre-order packages after the t-shirt one sold out. It was 25 bucks for the album, assorted goodies, and a shirt. I'd pay 25 bucks for the shirt alone if I could find one in 2X.
Looks like I'll have to get my shirt when I see them live.
They are not coming anywhere near where I live, but I'm still really tempted to drive four hours to go though, Cynic AND Devin? Hope this spouts some collaborations.
Meh. Slayer is the only band I could say I remotely like out of those 4, although I understand why it's such a big deal.
Mustis and Vortex left Dimmu Borgir. There goes DB, those two made that band awesome, and they couldn't be the same without them. A bit sad, however I hope they both continue with their own projects, new bands, etc.
Yeah, if they come to the US, I'm so gonna be there.
You better be! Why do you even need to say it? We know you will.
EDIT: I don't particularly like Megadeth, regardless of that I'm still going no matter what for two reasons. Number one: Because I like Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica and the conception of them playing together is mind-blowing. I don't think face melt is the proper word to describe what will be played in this quartet. Number two: I'll go because this is a significant event in the history of metal and will be particularly remembered by metalheads for years to come, and I want to be one of those people who will say "I was there." just like how people are impressed when someone who went to Woodstock '69 admits that.

Really? No love for Metallica? The only one of the four I've yet to see live is Megadeth, and I doubt they'll be anything special. Metallica are far and away the best performers of the lot, and IMNSHO, the best overall band out of all of them as well.
Anthrax is pretty weak. Slayer is a good show, but mostly for the crowd; the band is alright. I've also fallen out of love with Slayer the past few years; I just don't hear enough truly "new" stuff from them. While Metallica aren't interested in pushing the boundaries of metal any more, they continue to push themselves as artists, and that's why the stuff they keep releasing is varied and interesting.
I maintain to this day that Megadeth could have been a great band if Mustaine would have just gotten over it and not tried to copy Metallica. Do your own thing, Dave. Also, it would help tremendously if Dave wasn't a giant douchecookie.
On a different note, I'm really really really stoked to see Nile live in January. Anyone planning on going to see them? Nile, Immolation, Abigail Williams, Krisiun, and Dreaming Dead. That show is going to hurt in all the right ways.
If this concert comes toward the East Coast, maybe some of us forumites and FRC members should get together and enjoy the concert together, who's up for something like that?
EDIT: Seriously...no one wants to do this? Oh well.
"This is a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity for Heavy Metal "Fans" to see the four greatest Heavy Metal "Bands" in American History back together on one stage" concludes MEGADETH mainman DAVE MUSTAINE.
...And yet they are not playing in America. Ironic?

Still don't understand how my roommates listen to grind/gore/pornocore and the various extreme variants of black metal, though...
While this is not strictly prog, I just want o get everyone listening to Toe, they are amazing.
There's heavier and far more riff-laden tunes in their catalog, but Divinations has the soft interludes that really characterize the piece.

I am going to see Nile in February. I'm super excited.
