  • New Yorker article speculating on why children enjoy fantasy books
It's an interesting theory, although the author comes a bit close to being an apologist for Stephanie Meyer and Christopher Paolini.

Now this is a pretty good prank.

  • This makes me want a smartphone. It would be ridiculously easy to create a budget for yourself.

That reminds me of a story I saw today about Mastercard and a particular watchmaker teaming up to basically make a combination between the Mastercard paypass system and a cheap-looking watch.

Which immediately prompted the usual crazies talking about the mark of the beast, people being enslaved, and so on. But at least I suppose that lead to the amusing comment "So, you're a guy who fears that a being will punish them beyond measure and imagination for eternity, if you don't follow his orders and directives, but you're laughing at other people becoming enslaved by a low-limit credit card in a watch?"

There are many such apps already.

There are apps that allow you to essentially create an escrow account for yourself? I was unaware, but it's good to know!
I like the idea of saying "Okay software, my spending limit this week is $X, warn me when I get to 75% of that." Or if you sharing an account with another person, setting a max like $X a month or something so that everyone knows how much is left and how much can be dumped into savings later. Even better if the software would do the savings for you.

PNC already made an app that does this for me. I also have 3 bank accounts, long term savings, short term savings and immediate spending cash.

  • If you need a spending limit go with cash. If you don't have the cash don't make the purchase.

  • Isn't that a rugby chant?

No, haka are various maori dances, and are/were used for multiple purposes, from war dances, to amusement, to welcoming foreign dignitaries. That one is the Ka Mate haka, a haka taparahi - Ceremonial haka. It's about a ruse that an old maori war leader used to trick his enemies, and it's the most famous, because of it's use by the All Blacks.

No, It's not, that's just why it's famous internationally. Many of the NZ national sports teams do the same thing, from the grass hockey to the basketball. And haka have been performed since before rugby was invented. It's like saying grass is a rugby thing, because that's what they play on.

    Lulziest.

(Actually, it suggests PBR for things that are barely hipster. I'm a little disappointed, really.)
