You could've, I don't know, used an appropriate joke like "alldwarf" if you wanted to go full retard. Or do you use "everypony" also when you talk to your grandmother? Keep MLP stuff to MLP threads please. Leaking shit is what makes people hate fandoms.

People waiting for their turn shouldn't be forced of course. In the case of too many inane mandates the player can just use them as guidance or pick a few he'll focus on.
  • I say everypony occasionally in real life, even to non-Internet people. I also occasionally reference The Simpsons in threads that aren't about The Simpsons. Or is that not OK either?

Hint: every time someone says "Boo-urns" somewhere not in the specific context of The Simpsons, it's identical to saying "everypony."

I'll tell you why that's not the case. In 17 years time, no-one will be saying "everypony" and having a reasonable expectation of the other person knowing what the fuck they're talking about.
  • In 17 years, the 4-6 year olds of today will be the college students.

OK, a sincere question from an outsider: is the show honestly that popular outside the twenty-somethings following on the internet? Is it massive among the 4-6 year olds? Simpsons big?
  • That would require research and statistics. All I have is my niece, coworkers kids, and friends kids. One little boy REALLY likes Rainbow Dash.

I mean, last night I was talking with random ladies about Power Rangers and Voltron. Things don't have to be Simpsons big to be a cultural phenomenon among nerdy people.

You do realize that most younger people today have never seen old episodes of The Simpsons and would have no idea what "Boo-urns" is referring to, right?

I personally referenced the old "Nothing could possib-lie go wrong" bit at a convention panel, and it was obvious that basically no one in the audience understood that it was even a reference.

You put too much weight on your own perspective. They're the same level of reference, and neither is "annoying" unless the annoyed party is an oversensitive crybaby.
  • More generally, complaining that some particular popular culture thing is somehow "leaking" into discussions about other things on the Internet is a ridiculous complaint.
  • Unlike nine, I don't give a crap about stuff like that anymore. Quote whatever you like wherever you like as far as I'm concerned, just realise it can draw a sharp reaction from troglodytes like nine.

If I was making a point in my earlier reply, which I'm not sure I was, it would be that quoting The Simpsons is more acceptable than quoting the pony show because The Simpsons is a proven cultural touchstone. It has stood the test of time. MLP, from my understanding, is or was foundering in only its second season, which leads me to believe it will not fare well with the passing of time. That's all, no value judgement on it or the people who enjoy it.
  • It's not even about the source material at this point. The fandom itself has acquired an identity all of it's own that is worthy of my contempt and disgust.

A source material and a community are two separate things. I like the ony show, I do not like people who fap to ponies. I do like people who make pony fan art. I do not like the people who make erotic pony fan art. I like people who like ponies. I do not like people who like ponies too much.

  • Why does something have to prove a test of time to be referenced in conversation?

How so, and how differently from any other fandom? Lost fans were just as "annoying" when Lost was on, sportsball fans bring sportsball up all the time and get weird about it (e.g., the people sending hate mail to the victims of Sandusky in the whole PSU thing), Twilight fans do their crazy crap, etc... How are ponies in any way different?

Pony fans are willfully indignant to those who do not wish to be constantly bombarded with references to the show and purposefully inject ponies into every single piece of media. I think part of it is that they think they are more "open-minded" or socially advanced because 20 something men can enjoy a show meant for pre-tween girls. Surprise, you're not. I think it's clear that we just don't want to Rarity or Rainbow dash referenced in every single thread/video/picture/meme. Also, we don't give a fuck who is your favorite pony.

Also there is the whole creepy sexualization and objectification of animals. It's just a subset, but fuck...

One, the same could be said of Lost or Twilight fans: you just don't run in the same circles as them to see it.

Two, "purposeful injection?" Really? As opposed to just referencing a recently popular thing? All fandoms do that at all times. Dr. Who fans are waaaay guilty in this regard: ponies aren't special. You just happen to be in Internet circles where there are a lot of pony fans as opposed to other otherwise identical fandoms.

I think somepony needs to chill.

Yes, I also hate Dr. Who fans and Lost/Twilight fans for the same reason. But like you said they aren't here. Which is why ponies are the target of my ire. Furthermore, just because other fandoms are guilty doesn't make it any less annoying or frustrating.

  • If nothing else I'm a little sorry for causing a derail on this thread, but I'm not sorry for saying "everypony."

It seems a silly thing to bear any ire for.

Should I not bring up Justinian here in relation to the dwarves? After all, Roman history is an unrelated fandom, and I wouldn't want to offend your delicate sensibilities by referencing outside things. And, we all know that Rome didn't stand the test of time, so referencing is is especially annoying.

  • At least Romans are a little bit germane to the topic at hand.
  • Can we get back to dorfs now?

Let's play with the Dorf pony mod.

  • See ton of new posts in succession thread. Arguing ponies. :[
  • Fuck out of place references, be they Simpsons, MLP, or Dr. whoeverthefuckhaveyou. A reference that doesn't add to the conversation or make the comment clever, witty and/or funny is just obnoxious. A bad reference is worse than a bad pun, obnoxious, out-of-place and forced, yet fails to be so groan-inducing that a chuckle can be had over the crappy joke.

You wouldn't randomly shout out "Boo-urns", now would you? You would make that reference while in a group boo'ing someone. Or a whole group saying it while only one person says "Boo". "Nothing could possib-lie go wrong." is also a subtle reference that when ignored or missed doesn't stand out painfully in (speech) text and doesn't disrupt the conversation. Unless, again, it was just randomly put out there at which point it's as bad as someone randomly mentioning his car oil and that he's gonna change it tomorrow while you were in a philosophical debate about something utterly unrelated to car oil and the changing thereof.

Forcing references without being clever about them annoying as shit and looks like nothing more than a desperate attempt to garner some social currency. As I said before, if he wanted to make that reference, make it actually funny with something like "everydwarf". That way it's has become a clever reference to MLP without being obnoxiously obvious, out-of-place and in-your-face with it.
Should I not bring up Justinian here in relation to the dwarves?
In relation to being key here. The problem is that the reference was not in relation to dwarves. Instead just standing there like a sore thumb.

Also, Dr. Who fans keep more to their own than MLP fans. And I actively try to go around the MLP fans.
  • Nine pretty much said what I think about the subject except he worded it in a more Nineish way.

Saying "everypony" is also trivially ignored and doesn't disrupt the conversation in any way. ;^)

I disagree on Dr. Who fans. They invade general-purpose forums and take no prisoners.

Speaking as a Dr. Who fan, I've got to say, I haven't seen this. Ever.

Read Fark or have a conversation with someone at an anime con. ;^)

Except that it painfully stands out, especially if it immediately gets pointed out in the follow-up post. This does in no way change the fact that it was a bad reference that could have been made better, and thereby clever. In that case I would've said Andrew take a chill pill.
