Erm.. guys, you might want to put some guards by that lava or set up a tunnel with magma resistant bars to stop magma men running wild in your fortress.

    Aw shits. Awesome.
  • Thane, how can I put a map on that map archive thing?
    Just follow the diagram.

My strategy was raise the drawbridge, gather the troops, lower the drawbridge, and hope the traps take out 90% of the buggers.

Ok, so a couple of issues. First of all, I've had to restart the game about three times because it keeps crashing. I'm not sure if it's a version issue because I picked up the latest version of DF or if it's Vista.

Secondly, I did successfully repel the first siege with great ease. I created a large contingent of marksdwarves and stationed them on top of the walled fortifications. The goblins fell with great ease and we lost no dwarves. But alas, that game has been lost...

EDIT: Can anyone remind me of what version the original game was?

Awwww, ah well, at least it's known to be survivable, as for the version, eh, the last version to have come out afaik.
  • Are you sure? There have been several updates since we start playing, the latest one in February.

That's the one. I have used that one during my game. v0.27.176.38c to be precise.

    It's Vista.

Is there anything I can do about this? Is there a specific issue or what? I cannot play through a turn until this gets fixed. Maybe the next person should take over until I find a solution.

Did you try automatic seasonal auto-saves and auto-backups? Else you might have to downgrade to XP, which is probably not desired. Or try to run it on a Linux system with Wine. I haven't had a single major crash with Wine, only a few stalls which I killed.

Could you point me out on how to set up these automatic saves?

They're in the init file. Just read through it and you'll see it. You can also set various other things there, but the only useful ones imho are the skip intro, flow ammounts and auto-save/back-up.

That is, ./data/init/init.txt. Just to make sure.

  • Ok, yeah I need to skip this turn. Whoever is next, enjoy.

Shits. Other than booting into Linux and running it under Wine, I can't think of any way of fixing it.

I reinstalled and started my own game without any issues. I'll try it again tonight to see if it might be the save that is the issue.

Why would the save file be corrupted?

    That was a stupid question.

You can use a USB drive Linux with WINE and DF installed.

Ok guys, to hold you over I will post some of the screen caps from some of the games that have been lost.

    image
This is the first official siege we undertook. It consisted of several goblins that mopped up all loose dwarves who didn't make it in time to fort before I locked us up. They then proceeded to the main entrance. Luckily I had conscripted all the peasants into a crossbow squad and had trained them to be marksdwarves. I stationed them on the rafters of the main wall and awaited.

    image
    They quickly retreated.

In another save, I was ambushed near the forest where we cut the trees several levels up from the main entrance. Elves arrived at the same time and were quickly slaughtered. I sealed up the fort and just ignored them as my military wasn't quite up to par as the first go around.

    Well, guess what happened next.

FUCKING MIGRANTS, IN ALL OF THEIR STUPIDITY, SHOWED UP! WHAT. THE. FUCK.
    image
    WELCOME TO DRAGONSACKS!!

So, there it is. A taste of what is to come in a renewed year of warfare and expansion.

  • Isn't it beautiful watching how the idiots walk straight into a siege?

    I love this game!

These were actually two separate events while I was playing. Because of the crashes I have restarted my turn about six times now. However, I just reinstalled DF and I think that will solve the problem.
  • Just get a copy of linux that will fit on a flash stick and play it through wine.

Ok, yeah. With all the issues I'm having plus my schedule, I officially skip my turn.

On to me, I guess. This week is looking a little full except for Sunday, so it's possible may need a few extra days but chances are that some time will open up and I'll have my turn done on time.

Shit. I just know that I'm gonna fuck up these sieges somehow...

It's easy enough to do. In my latest fort I build a long corridor leading up to the entrance, and filled it with traps. Works like magic, and there's little chance of an ambush squad sneaking through your last line of defences.

I started trying to play my turn and realized that I'm having to relearn the game all over again because I haven't played for such a long time. This, combined with the fact that that I'm going to be on vacation in the next few days and am not going to be able to finish my turn on time anyway makes me want to just drop out of the game completely. My turn last time took me about 8-9 hours to complete and I don't feel like I am going to be able to make that same time commitment in the coming months because of junior year in high school chaos. Oh, and all that whole "getting into college" thing.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I feel I must drop out. May Dragonsacks prosper in the coming seasons.

  • I don't blame you Sail, it's a huge effort to get a turn done at this point. Infinity, are you ready to take your turn?
  • I think I'll pass. I've sort of lost my interest in the game at this point, but I might come back if significant additions were added and the interface was improved.
  • OK, this is grim. Unless a couple of new players suddenly want to step up and fill the shoes of departing players, I think we may have to retire the fortress. ;_;

Someone play a final turn and make sure the fortress dies in a blaze of glory.
