When creating your first colony I suggest going at least 3 islands away. Also you want to build them in a line, not a square formation.
By spreading out in a line you make your individual trading posts on the other islands better as you will have less overlap. You will also find that it greatly benefits you to increase the size of your port. When you are sending 300 of something back to your capital at a rate of 10 per minute you are looking at a 30 minute cost. Level 2 makes it 30 per minute knocking 20 minutes off of that transport cost. You don't want to have too many ships backed up at your port waiting to unload.
I am also finding that you also want to spend the money to beef up your warehouse rather than buy defensive units. Money is super easy to get in this game as you sell your luxury goods for double the opportunity cost (if not triple) very easily.
Because you need to be around when things finish building to maximize the time cost of the game I tend to drop all research during the day light hours and flip them back on when I am going to be offline for a while. I don't want my warehouse getting overfull and have it raided while I am away.
Also, if you can spare the action point send two different fleets when sending more than 300 resources between cities. This way once the first ship is full it will leave rather than have to wait for all the ships to fill up.

Why 3 islands away? Wouldn't it be best to have the isles of your colonies directly against your main/first island? It takes a long time to travel from one island to one directly next to it, let alone 3 islands further...
An army. You need Sulphur to build some good troops and warships, care to trade some of your marble for my sulphur? Say, 1:1? I've got 200 sulphur and need 83 marble at least to upgrade my warehouse to level 6.
If you can contact me by IM or something.
Edit: forgot to add, you have to research the appropriate stuff to be able and train better troops or build better warships. Slingers only cost wood and have a low upkeep, but suck. All warships need sulphur though.
I'm in dire need of marble right now. If someone sends me some now, I'll give wine back at 1.5:1 when I get expansion in a day or two. Glass would be nice as well. Again, I'm in 11:54.
If one of your trade ships is returning, yes. I had the same message, but you don't get notified for it's just your own ship. Remember, it's only version 0.2.0.
Ok, I need more diplomacy points in order to allow people in and to get more points I need to upgrade my embassy. And in order to upgrade I need marble. So...if you want to join send me marble ^__^
Does anyone need Sulphur? I'll trade 300 Sulphur for 600 Lumber.
Is this offer still good? I'll send the lumber if you send the sulfur.
No, I got enough wood now. I'll trade 1:1 Suplhur for Crystal. Message me in game.
I reworked my numbers on my main island and started pulling in 200 wood per hour. Once I got enough I started building my governor's residence for my colony. My colony is only producing about 50 Marble an hour right now. I got the Sulphur because I was making a killing buying it for 10 and selling it for 25 but my buyer stopped buying.
Saving up for it now. I need to build on a wine island to keep the happiness flowing.
I'm debating on what kind of island to settle on. Every island has it's benefits, but knowing which one to choose is difficult. I'm thinking now that Ninjaned is so close to me with marble, that I might go with wine.
Howdy everybody, I'm posting this for my friend Orin over in the city of Tellius on Phiejeios[56:88]. He's got up to 700 sulfur that he's looking to trade for some marble or some crystal. Contact him in-game if you're interested.
Andrew, if you could add Orin, as well as Twasazerg on Shelios[87:33] to the collective list of us all, I'd appreciate it. They have sulfur and crystal glass, respectively.
I wish I were able to trade for my deluxe goods like you, Steve. No one in my range is selling any goods, or buying them it seems. I'm in the business of pillaging (mostly idle towns) for more Sulfur at the moment.
Question for those with colonies, or anybody who knows: Are cargo ships shared between all of your cities, or are they exclusive to the city they're built in?

Wine - Open a Tavern and give out wine. In return your population growth rate will go up. Marble - Needed to build most buildings. Crystal - Needed for Scientific Research. Sulphur - Needed for any military units beyond Slingers.
Wine is the best resource for your capital or island with the most advanced "resource creation" spots. Gaining extra population units every hour helps offset the production cost of wine. It looks like 3 Wine = 1 person. don't think of this as an opportunity cost of 24 gold to create a person because people are not used up after creation!

What exactly do you need to start raiding folks?
I still don't have the hang of this, but it's fun.

This is the second time I have seen this "attack" coming my way:
Am I attacking myself or something???
