Your standard of proof is inconsistent.
This is true. I get picky about things pre-Korean War (roughly). I get really picky about Third Reich things.

  • THIS GIRL SHOULD BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

"IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM"

WRITTEN BY A 21 YEAR OLD FEMALE

Wow, this girl has a great plan! Love the last thing she would do the best.

This was written by a 21 yr old female who gets it. It's her future she's worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she's being forced to live in! These solutions are just common sense in her opinion.

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco , TX , Nov 18, 2011

    PUT ME IN CHARGE . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good.."

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov't subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov't welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

Now, if you have the guts - PASS IT ON...I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET THIS BACK, IF EVERYONE SENDS IT, I WILL GET OVER 220 BACK!!! I WOULD KNOW YOU SENT IT ON!!!
  • $100,000 says the author is Christian.
  • Good luck finding someone to bet against it.
  • My dad wrote "Well what do you think of these ideas" when he forwarded.

    I didn't know where to start :-p
  • Here's a good place to start : "You say she should be president, but you KNOW that the republican party would freak out just as bad as when they made a brown guy president, because she's not a 50 year old white dude millionaire."
  • I'm confused.

    What are we talking about?

At face value, the email writer is worried about the "social welfare big government state", and is praising a 21 year old woman who has "found the solution" - an even bigger social welfare big government state.

  • Alright, yes. That is confusing.
  • Hmm... a couple of the ideas in that aren't that bad, but they get diluted by the crazy. I mean, free birth control for low-income people? That's a great idea. Making people who are physically/mentally able to work actually, well, work instead of sitting on their butts and collecting a welfare check? Not that bad an idea, actually, provided that ample time is also given for things such as job training and/or looking for a "real job."

The crazy comes in when she talks about people on government assistance having Xbox 360s, 22" gold rims, and what not. While I don't doubt some of them have figured out how to abuse the system and have that stuff, the vast majority of them don't. Oh, and the whole "denying people the vote" thing is just plain nuts. We may as well go back to the time when only the landed gentry can vote.

I'm also a member of the landholding gentry, and, by and large, I have to agree with you there.
  • True enough, but there is enough abuse of the system to seek some sort of reform. Every dollar/resource that goes to someone abusing the system is that much less for the people who need it.

It's really easy to get very embittered about social programs when your paying better than 25% of your income to the government. You see one guy pull up to the welfare office in a nicer car than yours and it stings. Three weeks later your friend gets denied unemployment on a technicality and that sting can get a lot sharper.

Definitely. My sister-in-law personally knows some people who are gaming the system themselves. She definitely feels that people in need should get help, but that something needs to be done so that people can't abuse the system either. The system could use a good bit of reform in order to reduce or eliminate (if possible) those who are abusing the system. While the notion of "welfare queens" has pretty much been discredited (despite still being a popular image), the fact that a fair bit of abuse still goes on does mean that it can be improved.

Or maybe taking people's quarters and putting it into washing machines for them, because that worked so well for the USSR.

My problem with the piece isn't even sociopathy towards the proletariat, it's the simplistic solutions to complicated problems. Yes, these measures would reduce the number of people who gain the system, but they aren't free. All those tox-screens will cost a lot. Is it actually going to save the taxpayer money? Will it cost him/her more?

  • Remember, it's not actually about small government or saving money. It's about punishing the poor, because poverty is a moral failing. That's what it's always been about.

Indeed... The solutions are overly simplistic. While there certainly are plenty of things that could be done (picking up trash, cleaning up graffiti, etc.) that apparently aren't done as a way to make sure people on welfare actually do something useful to earn their checks (again, provided suitable time is also given for job training and searching for "real" jobs), we also don't want to get into the whole make-work scenario that you mentioned as well. A balance needs to be struck, and to be fair if we count job training/education and/or attending job interviews towards whatever "work quota" you're required to contribute to in order to obtain welfare, that may not be so bad. Also, keep in mind that we do have the historical precedent of the WPA of finding useful things for out of work people to do to earn their welfare checks. Admittedly, the WPA couldn't find stuff for everyone to do, but a lot of useful stuff was done.

That's probably where a lot of the crazy in that letter comes from. The whole tox-screen thing comes from the notion that if you're poor, it's your fault for being a drunk/drug addict/etc. A somewhat more enlightened solution would be that if you're a drug addict who wants to go on welfare, you should be required to attend rehab on the taxpayers' dime as well. Denying a drug addict welfare as a matter of punishment won't help anyone. Forcing a drug addict to go into rehab at no charge to them in order to receive welfare has the benefit of hopefully allowing said addict to eventually contribute to society and get off of welfare by holding a steady job without the addiction interfering.

This would certainly be good. I didn't mean to say that the suggestion didn't have merit, but that the simplicity it was proposed with made the author sound more communist than hard-core capitalist -- which is probably the last thing she was expecting.
  • I've been told that in England, there are places that are run by the government that look around and see what is needed out there, so if there's a lack of say, cooks, you could go and get paid to learn how to cook and get placed into a job potentially. I've always thought that was a useful idea. Castrating the poor is um...less so.

I think you might mean the Job-Center, who also handle unemployment. It's a great idea in theory, but from everything I've heard and seen(but not personally experienced, admittedly) the execution is rather less than brilliant.

This. Absolutely this. The vitriol is based out of a bitter, politically-vamped schadenfreude informed by fuzzy logic. Like this:

  • Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25% highest in country.
Man, who WOULDN'T kill for such a low sales tax? I ask you, wouldn't you?

    IN GOD WE TRUST

    Dear Fellow Conservative,

We've known for years that the Obama Administration is anti-faith and that they despise the Catholic Church. But now, with re-election a distant worry, they've taken their hatred to a new level.

Right this very moment, there is a petition on the White House website that condemns Pope Benedict XVI's address to the College of Cardinals and the Catholic Church. Please follow this link right now to make an emergency donation of $16 or more to show your support for Pope Benedict XVI and the Church.

Signers of the petition want to declare the Catholic Church an official "hate group" because of our views on same-sex marriage—and unfortunately, the number is growing. I've taken a screenshot of the website for you, just in case they pull it down before you're able to check it out for yourself.

This petition is truly shocking, and it's an attack against ALL people of faith, not just Catholics! That's why I'm so urgently asking you to stand with Catholic Advocate today and help us launch an all-out campaign against the Obama Administrations hateful, secular agenda. Please follow this link right now to make an emergency donation of $16 or more.

Today it's Catholics who are under attack. Tomorrow it could be Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians or Jews. That's why we need to put a stop to this vicious culture of hate once and for all! Every dollar you give will go directly towards rallying Americans of all faiths to bombard the White House with emails, phone calls and petition signatures to STOP THEIR WAR ON FAITH!

So will you take a moment right now to donate $16 or more to stop the White House and protect your faith?

Thank you in advance for your urgent support.

    Yours in faith,

    Matt Smith
    President, Catholic Advocate

P.S. The White House has allowed a petition to declare the Catholic Church a "hate group" on their official website and Catholic Advocate won't take this attack sitting down. But to be effective, we need men and women of all faiths to stand with us and call on the White House to STOP THEIR HATEFUL AGENDA. Will you make an emergency donation of $16 or more to support our efforts? Your faith could come under attack next, so please stand with us today.

For the average person then yeah you hit up the job center, they offer some training. There are some courses like that but they are few. Often they would be an apprenticeship linked with a college. Some jobs pay for you to go on courses and train you with in the company. My mums hotel runs a course where they climb a mountain to visit the arcane monastery so as to understand the booking soft wear.

If you have a specific skill, say for instance a welder then you might be hired through a recruiting company and then onto the actual job. One of my dads friends works in the sector, for instance we have a shortage of osteopaths in Blackpool. He was contacted by one of the health companies that sends osteopaths to do home visits for elderly people to hire some. From that he went on to jewelers and then saddlers for some reason.

Problems come about when people leave uni with a pants degree or a low grade and can't find any work in their sector or in general. Coupled with a pretty easy benefit system you can end up with a bit of a mess.

  • Honestly, Ampersand, that sounds ideal to me. I've been stuck in retail sales for a long time and had a hard time moving on, so learning a new trade could be quite useful.

On a side note, I wish that the people writing these long winded emails would learn how to actually write instead of using this rushed gibberish approach.
  • @Jason: lolwut? Was the English?

It takes a long time to get there however. As I said the system gets abused to hell at times. One of the best ways here to to find the trade or skill you want, say stone mason, and see if it were possible to do a paid apprenticeship. It is not the best system and it needs a bit of a change but seems better than most.
