The weird thing is that is actually recorded that way. It sounded fine while we were recording it... *Shrug*
Super strange - it definitely sounded fine at the time, you're right. Maybe if you and a guest records it, if it happens again, you can fill in the blanks with the second recording?
Maybe, but I have a feeling this was a one off event that would have gone away with a reboot.
I don't know, man - all of the audio I've recorded is direct from my board(when I have one) so it's not an issue I've had to deal with. At the least, I'll probably record it on the side when I'm on, and if it happens again, I can shoot you over the file, if not, I can just delete it, or archive it, or whatever else. Not like it costs or bothers me any, and it's always nice to have a plan B.
Though, we did get a glimpse of slightly more regular episodes in the blooper reel - "But, ah, as I was saying..."*BEEP*
I suggest making the beep between blooper reel sections lower in tone. Lower in tone, more of a boop than a beep. I wish I could describe it to you in a more technical fashion...down around roughly 200-300 htz, maybe? I don't know.
I had to stop listening to this. By the end of the first topic there was a massive delay on sonic's audio track, so that there would be a massive delay before he started talking, and then his audio would play over the next person to speak.
Victor, don't you listen back to the final file before you upload it? Because if not, you really should! Either do no editing, and release the file as is (knowing no errors could have crept in) or do a thorough edit and then listen to the final result. Really, this is basic quality control, and lets the listeners actually enjoy the show. I mean, it was just impossible to listen through to the 20 minute mark, let alone to the end.

He did say before that the original recording is like that, and if the original recording is like that, there isn't much he can do about it - chopping out the big pauses are about all he can do about it, if that's the case.
This was due entirely to my experimentation with a new editing method I was trying for the first time. Since I record two audio streams (one for skype and one for myself), I edit in multitrack mode. Since I talk less often than all of the guests, in order to reduce noise, I decided to delete parts of my track where I'm quiet. I then lock the two track segments together. This, combined with some other editing tricks I've learned, saves me buckets of time. Unfortunately, I forget to lock some of them, so when I shifted segments, my voice got de-synced (as you heard).
Looking at the tracks, though, it looks like the problem only happened in the first segment and the beginning of the second. It looks like it was because I added the opening music after I had done the rest of the editing. The rest of it looks fine. I've fixed it so I'm re-rendering and uploading.
@Luke I listen to it while I'm editing and generally listen to it once it's rendered. But this time around I was in a rush to get it done because I knew I'd be useless on thursday and friday. But you are entirely correct.
@churba That actually wasn't the error I was talking about. I was talking about the occasional skipping in the skype track.
Rym, I've not listened to an episode of the SFBRP for several years either, or at least not between recording and uploading. But the difference between us and Sonic is that we have a reliable workflow and the skills the back it up, and Sonic doesn't.
Sonic, you have to care. Don't say you care and then not do the work, because not doing the work means you don't care. And when there are other people involved, and you make them sound bad, letting errors like this slip through is just unacceptable.
I also had a listen and some parts are really rough to listen to due to technical hiccups. The most noticeable things were the few times we had an echo, and most noticeably the constant cutting and skipping in the audio. It hasn't happened before, or if it has, it was not as bad as it was. The number of times there was blank empty space. The episode definitely needed some editing.

Don't do it that way: it's really easy to cock it up (I speak from experience).
If you're multi-tracking anyway, make and apply a noise gate to each track with a long ramp-up time (300-500ms) and a very short release time (1-5ms). Tweak it from there for each track such that it basically mutes the track when no one is speaking on it, but otherwise has no effect on the audio.

Yeah, I only get away with this for having made almost a thousand episodes of GeekNights and for having had a long history in audio engineering prior to "podcast" even being a word. It took a while to get to this point.
Sonic, in the early days of GeekNights, I was up for 3-4 hours some nights tediously listening to and repairing poor recordings or recovering from irreversible and stupid editing mistakes. It sucked. Hard. But the benefits of never rushing it are innumerable. We'd rather get the episode a week late but listenable. ;^)

THIS. I know it's easy for me to say, because all I do is show up and mouth off, but still.
Man, next time I am on, I'm going to work on my freaking crutch words. No more "Like, you know"
I have some breathing issues. Particularly breathing out my nose. I need to watch that next time.
I really would like to be on the show some time. Just so when I try and talk about Alabama's broken immigration law, everyone else is not talking about how sexy Kelly Ripa's high heels look...

I think it's safe to say that I won't be speaking about how sexy Kelly Ripa's heels look, because I've not a single clue who that is.

Same. I will, however, Google her because now my curiosity has been piqued.

Episode 51! New Coverart, new theme, slightly new format. I was thinking about naming the episode "The one where adam didn't show up" but I thought that would be too mean.
Also, Ray is on this episode! That's right, He's BACK!

EDIT: Ninjad.
Gotta say though, cheap as it was, my new mic sounds pretty alright. Far and away improvement over what I was using.

Edit: Oh, "Regis and Kelly" Kelly Ripa.

Hey, the next episode would make it a whole year since I started hosting the show, it would be great to have you on again!
