  • When new DS games come out that are worth buying and playing.
Shiren the Wanderer. Check it out.
    RPG, yawn.
  • Tokimeki Memorial: Girls side II. - Nintenboyfriends. A boy-touching game, Totally PG. Failed to get a fake boyfriend. I want to play the Ppoi VN instead.
-Gasp- Emily! I didn't think you were the kind of the person who'd be into dating sims?! Oh mans! Scandal time!

You obviously didn't read this thread by gomidog.
  • I'm glad that the DSi isn't coming to the US until spring 2009. I can see potential online store disasters when it launches in Japan. Hopefully we get an online store that works right off the bat. It's the feature that I am most excited about on the DSi. Think about it: Nintendo already have Wiiware, what is stopping Nintendo from doing DSware? I would love to develop an independent game for the DS through more legal channels. Imagine if we can play Mega Man 9 on the DS! I am also betting that Nintendo will definitely have GB and GBA games for download that we can save to the internal storage / SD card.
  • Well I like the DSi, look sorta nice. But what I dislike about the DSi the most is its battery life, it's only 3-4 hours (highest brightness). While the Lite is 5-8 hours (highest brightness). That's about the only thing I'm worried about so far.

No, it's a roguelike. There are RPG elements but the gameplay really revolves around puzzles. Dungeons are laid out randomly, each monster has different crazy powers, and deaths are permanent (you can't just reload a save). There are many threads on the net detailing the ways people have died but in most cases you can think of ways you could've survived by being smarter, in hindsight. I'd never played a roguelike before but I'm finding Shiren very addictive.
If you've already played roguelikes and don't like them, I don't know what to tell you.
  • No, it's a roguelike.
    Even worse...
you can't just reload a save
    ...and arbitrarily annoying. ^_~

If you're liking that, you should play Dwarf Fortress, and you should try Tendry's Tale.

They already ARE going to have something called DSWare, and they're officially changing "Wii Points" to "Nintendo Points" because of it.

I'm so glad I held out for this, I'm still on the DS fat. Why wasn't this announced at E3? Probably because they were too busy talking about how cool it is to wail your arms around like a fucktard at the Wii because hardcore games don't exsist on the Wii, and that being a gamer mom is awesome.

Mostly because the general media pays attention to E3, and they needed to concentrate on Casual news there.

DSWare- With homebrew, I cannot justify paying for shit like that on the DS. Then again, some stuff might be worthwhile. I'm a bit indifferent about this.
Camera- Don't care. I have my phone's camera if I need a quick shit-quality camera. As for games and/or apps that utilize this app, I assume they won't be any more in depth than something like the game boy camera. I'm open to Nintendo proving me wrong on this one, though.
No GBA slot- fucking lame. I'm still playing a ton of GBA games. I highly doubt this will increase the market for the SP and Micro, though. If anything, the Lite will receive a price cut when the DSi comes out...so it'll probably just raise demand for the Lite or used Phats (despite the shittyness of the phat, I'd take it over the SP for GBA games).
    Built in memory- cool
Built in browser- cool, but then again it'll probably be terrible.
SD card slot- awesome. This and the on-board memory are about the only features I'm looking forward to with the DSi. This is a large downer, though: "The DSi doesn’t have MP3 support outside of the box." (Source: Siliconera)
The fact that they're treating it as another console, and not as a replacement to the Lite and Phat- Annoying. I mean sure, the DS first came out in November of '04, so it's almost 4 years old. The DS came out only 3 years after the GBA came out (then again, it wasn't intended to replace the GBA, even though it did...much like how the DSi isn't intended to replace the DS, even though it will), so I guess it is about time for Nintendo to come out with something new. I'm kind of annoyed at how they want to pass this off as a "third platform" even though it's really not *that* different than the DS itself. Sure, the GBA wasn't that much different than the GBC (different button layout, shoulder buttons, bigger screen...), but it wasn't considered a "third platform", either. The DS, however, was drastically different than the GBA.

tl;dr: quite annoyed that they want this to be a "third platform" instead of just another DS upgrade (and really, why not? the GBA had 2 upgrades, 3 if you count the SP with a better light).
    Yeah, that's a no-brainer.
You can say that for sure, even though no price has been announced yet (as far as I know of, at least)?
Until the price comes out, I'm not recommending this to anyone. Plus the lack of a gba slot means that it won't be replacing my lite any time soon. It might be a complement, but not a replacement.

  • The lack of GBA slot sucks, since I broke my GBA SP. But the great trade off is the SD card slot which while make the DS so easy to do firmware hacks.
  • Now we just have to wait for the DSi: Miami...
  • I don't have a DS, nor a GBA or any GBA games. I was going to get a DS sometime in the near future, but now should I wait for the DSi?

    Depends on a few things...
    1. price
    2. whether or not you want to play GBA games. If you do, get a lite.
    3. how patient you are. Some sources say that North America won't be getting the DSi till late '09, which is a year away...

Personally, I love the GBA and the DS. Finding a used DS Lite (probably around $100) would be a good idea if you have the money right now. Also, you may as well just invest in a R4, M3, or Cyclo and then you won't have to actually pay for any DS games...

  • What's to thinking they're going to be selling GBA games cheaply via download?
  • If I ran the company I would resell as many of the old GBA and even GBC games on their network to try and squeese more cash out of those dead franchieses. I wouldn't make them cheap per say bit more reasonable. I dont know how the 'nintendo points' system works, but I'd charge at least $5 for even GBC games based in popularity. The more they sell the less I have to charge to make more $$ on it.
  • What's to thinking they're going to be selling GBA games cheaply via download?
It's a great idea, so I doubt Nintendo will do it...<_<
Yes, I love Nintendo and all, but they really have a knack for dicking over fans.

Then again, I could see them doing a sort of "handheld Virtual console" type thing and offering GB/GBC and GBA games. I mean, they want to have a store and all.

In that case, it would change my opinion slightly, but not by much. No way in hell would I re-buy games that I already own cartridges for just so I can play them on the new DS.
  • If they really want to do something good they should let you transfer your virtual console games to the DSi. I doubt that's a possibility, let alone letting you download any old console games for it.

Of course they'll do it! They'll be able to sell more Mario and Zelda and Metroid and Pokemon that way. Consider for a moment how many times they've re-released the original Super Mario Bros. and the original Legend of Zelda. If people are willing to replace their DS with this one but still have a desire to play GBA games, Nintendo will no doubt start a Virtual Console sort of thing that sells portable games for the DSi. That way people could play old GB-era games on their DS, as well.
  • Looks like I need to get me a GBA original (for the backward compatibility) and maybe this for the DS games. However if the key is if the "hacker" scene is going to use the SD card to create a portable home brew channel...that might tip the scale.
  • Well, the good things is that if they release one or two GBA games then they need to allow loading GBA code from the slot and that shouldn't take long to crack. I'd guess it might be cracked before it get released in the west in spring.
  • Well GBA is really the only tipping point for me. I can already play NES, SNES, Genesis, and GB/GBC on my DS with my Cyclo. I can't play GBA without the 3 in 1, which I really have no plans on getting. Therefore, I need a console to play my GBA games. Thus, GBA is really the only thing that matters to me. If Nintendo decides to have downloadable GB/GBC games for the DSi, it won't really matter much to me.

Then again, for the non-pirating public...selling GB games would be a fortune for Nintendo.

Sorry for the double post, but I just want to bump this.
After seeing this article, I'm about done with caring about the DSi. Seriously, being region free was one of the things I really loved about the DS.

A commenter on DS Fanboy said:
You're only going to shoot yourself in the foot by forcing some importers into outright piracy.
Indeed you have, Nintendo. This importer is now going to pirate a hell of a lot more now.

  • I'll bet you a) They're not really giving much of a rip about this anyway (even Reggie isn't excited, "This isn't my problem until 2009") and b) This will be the second coming of the Virtual Boy.

With the onset of all this fucking nonsense they have on here ("Oh! You will only be able to play your own region, enjoy "Imagine Babyz[sic] i, Europe!", Nintendo Points cards are bound to one System, hope you have £14 spare if you want both Megaman 9 and [insert name of DSi Virtual Console game here]) they're going to have to pull out a game that is on the level of Super Mario 64 in terms of greatness and reinventing a genre (that is not "casual") for me to even consider getting rid of my DS fat (You fucking heard me, Internet, DS FAT) with it's copy of Disgaea DS in there.

At this point, I highly doubt that Nintendo have another Super Mario 64 in them.
  • DS fat (You fucking heard me, Internet, DS FAT)
I believe you mean DS Phat.
