Tried to repair my work headphones. Failed. The wires inside the headphone cables are just too damn thin. Maybe if they weren't so thin, this shit wouldn't break in the first place.

It is incredibly frustrating just how many perfectly good headphones break because the cables are shit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the important part of these things.
The ones I really hate are the braided cable, where the copper is all braided and woven around a central non-conductive core. They're really easy to fuck up, and you can't repair them, because to repair the cable you essentially have to braid in a new section of hair-thin wire, by hand, without making any mistakes. Cable dies on those, you either replace the cable entirely, or buy a new pair.

  • Then go to the electronics store, buy some better cable and go to town.
I tried that. The problem is soldering the new cable. When you strip the cable that is part of the headphones inside there are like 5 super fragile strands of copper covered by insulation. Even if you manage to remove the insulation without breaking the wires, good luck attaching them. Even worse, they seem to repel solder like nothing else I've ever seen before.

That's the ones! Why do they even make those? The extension cord I got for $2 is super strong, thick, etc. Why not have cable like that be built into the headphones?

I don't know, man - but I think you're thinking like both an engineer and an end user, not a manufacturer. I suspect it's because it's easy for them to produce, the copper they buy makes more cable(by weight, anyway - they buy it in spools like thread, funnily enough), and because you end up with more flexible, pliable cable.

My Senn headphones have lasted since 2008, the cable is rock solid, it's like a fucking extension cord. But, it's also stiff as shit and about 5mm thick - if you had earphones with cables like this, they'd fucking suck, it'd be like wearing a soft wire coathanger. You could hang someone with this cable, or damn near.

The other good thing that I genuinely can't think why they don't do for more headphones, I can actually unplug the cable at both ends, and it's essentially just a cable with two 3.5 jacks on it. If the cable ever goes to shit, I can cut the plugs - or even just the small headphone-end plug - splice them onto a new cable, and I'm good to go.

But small touches like this are super uncommon. And frankly, I don't know why, because it's simple touches like this that only aid your rep as a reliable, popular brand.

Sorry. I actually know how to do that properly in Photoshop now. I just only have MS Paint at work. Also, I should have put a Rym hologram there instead.

Fix-ed. Would have turned out better if I had a fine sharpie but pretty good nonetheless.

  • How the hell did your Jimi last six years? When I was using them I went through a new one every 1.5 years until I got sick of having to always fold my money and never having enough space for cards.
  • Due care and attention.

I have plenty of space for cards (4 credit cards, plus a handful of IDs and other things). Money folds into the external clip.

Jimi lasted many years without issue.

I'm looking at the JimiX and can't work out if the old money clip is still on the inside as well.

  • It's not on the inside. Just the outside.

But, ordering them on Amazon, you'll usually get the wrong Jimi anyway.
  • I'm watching this amazing documentary about the old Sukhothai Kingdom and the festivals in that region today on NHK World and all I can think of is Rym and Scott saying "Fuck You, Sukhothai!"
  • Stop giving Fred Gallagher money.

    Ughuuuuuuu.
  • Even though I no longer care for MegaTokyo or understand what I ever saw in it, I'd rather see his Kickstarter go through than that guide on how to be a sexual predator on women.

If people still enjoy his stuff, who are we to hate?

Indeed. He's at least a decent human being (to the best of my knowledge) and even if we don't like his stuff, it's not like it's evil or anything like that.
  • Cooling fluid line on my car spring a leak. Fucking fantastic. Particularly on the 35°C (that's a 95 in that other, stupid temperature scale) heatwave we are currently experiencing.
  • Better than it bursting, that's what happened to me.
  • I've never really understood the dislike for the guy. I mean Gabe and Tycho said it best, not matter how much we dislike him he dislikes himself more. I mean hes no Tim Buckly thats for sure.

The comic has so far covered 71 days, 488 different scenes and roughly 144 different locations.
Oh jesus the comic is 13 years old and they've been in Japan for two and a bit months.

Which, coincidentally, is also roughly how often it updates.
