I am receiving a pre-bonus bonus, because my boss has been so impressed with my performance, my promotion will be official in February when I complete my fully reimbursable Paralegal program, and my new staff (MY STAFF - so cool) love me because I bend over backward to keep the place running efficiently with a positive, team oriented work model, and I take the time to explain why our procedures are necessary so that they never feel they are doing busy work. The cherry on this triple-awesome Sunday is that I have three use-it-or-lose-it days before the end of the year (thanks to a data entry error when my company switched payroll software mid-year) and five carry over days for 2015 in addition to the extra days I've earned for being with the company for five years. This job has had some low points, but perserverence, speaking up for myself, and taking every opportunity for advancement possible is really paying off.
Next fall, I hope to enroll in a Masters in Legal Studies program, which my company will reimburse as long as I attend as a part-time student.
Wow. So awesome! Congrats to you. If only all management knew if they take care of their employees, their employees will take care of them.
Thanks, Ro!!
My office royally screwed over a previous employee and allowed a crappy employee to stay on too long. My Manager is weak willed, but in the intervening years, I've taken on a lot of duties that he was unwilling/unable to do. I've learned how to gently manipulate him and, when needed, bypass him. My promiton is mostly owing to creating a relationship with my boss's boss and getting his ear when needed.
I work in construction as a quantity surveyor. I'm the guy who organises the tender process, sets up orders, manages the accounts and negotiates final settlements.
This promotional video shows the project I was finishing 9 months back. It makes me proud to see things I've done benefitting people later on. The irony here was that I had to be security vetted and instructed to never share any pictures or videos that I'd taken as part of my work. Especially if they showed police doing any training.
Normally would post something like this in the YouTube video thread, but this counts as a "boo yah!" for me because I was able to get credit for this video as the final assignment for my Film Criticism class -- which means that this video constitutes THE LAST ASSIGNMENT OF MY BACHELOR'S DEGREE, AWWW YEEEEAAAHHHH *headbangs to "School's Out"*
Aside from that, though, it is also the real beginning of a series I've been hyped to start working on in earnest for a while now. Very happy with how it turned out and can't wait to keep doing more:
Looks like we're gonna be running related shows! Being a production guy, I'm definitely more on the side against auteur-ism, but I know that's just how things work and that's okay. "Cinema is director's medium" for a reason. It just makes me all the more appreciate when directors step back and lets the production specialists do their best. For example: Ben Burtt's work on WALL-E.
Just used the $50 steam gift card my best friend gave me for Christmas. Got Bioshock Infinite, Saints Row 4 GOTY edition, Contrast, Kerbal Space Program, and The Marvellous Miss Take. I think Contrast and Miss Take should run on my little laptop, so I might play some during down time at Anime LA. Apart from that, I think I'll have to wait until I can get any real time into those.
What felt great about this is that I wrote the 2000 word article within 2 hours and immediately got edited/approved the next day. My passion for writing has really come back in full force.
Ditching my $1300 year colocation plan in favor of a $50 shared hosting plan because I really only use email these days. Now I need to figure out what to do with a server when I have them ship it back to me.
I made it out of the first semester of first year engineering in one piece. Those exams, especially the Physics ones, were like stereotypical little girls from horror movies who just want to rip your guts.
So over the holiday my two disgruntled new coworkers/trainers left for two weeks along with my new, ineffective boss. At the same time, a former colleague of theirs relocated his office back to our area. I spent the last two weeks getting crap tons of validation "no, you're not crazy, they're all jerks" and advice and now I finally have my feet on the ground in this insane asylum.
I also got a chance to talk to some of our stakeholders, who want to talk to me about finally getting some work done in this place.
This has the potential to go very well. And in any case it's always better to have a job while looking for one... :P
Ran my game "Quest to Castle Raunchausen" at Anime Los Angeles for the very first time. It went really well. The players scored 99/100. One of the staffers came up and told me how much they liked it, so I was just gonna let her have it, but she offered me a dollar.
@open_sketchbook , I'll need to talk to you about that RPG selling site you use at some point.
