Now I'm getting the "update" error. Not that I have been able to figure out much in my two to three hours of playing other than it's very hard to get around. It took me over an hour just to get to the settlement I was assigned to. A group of us had to wait for someone with a blaster to come along because it was geographically impossible to reach it otherwise. Also, my "Home" respawn button doesn't always take me back to base. In fact, it has rarely taken me back to base. Then I somehow unintentionally left my settlement and created a new one without knowing how. Not really as much fun as it's been frustrating. I guess I'm done playing for the night since I'm locked out.

Pretty much my experience too. It's a game in dire need of a tutorial.
I'm back in this morning. News: We've got swimming gear! I powered up a turret I'd placed in the middle of the base. Had to sneak around and disconnect the power after it turned out they also fire upon friendlies. Enemies have taken over the power relay I set up. Still can't work out how to manufacture power orbs.. need them to build the bigger buildings.
I finally ended up in the settlement, figured out how to join it, and then spent 15 minutes trying to find the radio monolith that I had just seen. Still haven't found it.
I like the game, I think it'll just take some getting used to.
Also, we have at least 20 of those tokens/monoliths.
If it's a bunch of disorganised monoliths with a stupidly big wall around it, you're on the right server. They seriously need to put an energy cost on modifying terrain.
Oops, I got in a teleporter back to base but it turned out, the tele at the other end was going to the first tele, I ended up in a loop.
Use the binoculars to save the location of your target then hit one of the buttons on that screen that pops up with the config tool to load it's location into the transmitter. Then just connect the dots.
Played some more just now and I'm starting to get the hang of it. Whoever said it was DF meets Tribes was right. This game has amazing potential to be one of the best multiplayer gaming experiences ever, and it's off to a pretty good start.
So, presumably when this game is post-alpha, how are we going to work out playing with eachother? Do we create an FRCF settlement? Do we create two warring FRCF settlements? Or would it just be best to set up an FRCF Love server?
Well, someone (I think accidentally.) has come up with the ultimate greifing strategy. Use the land manipulate tool to put the monolith up high, and keep doing so if people try to stop you, then wait until the server crashes/goes offline. When everyone logs back in, they can't get to the monolith as it's too high up and we can't find a way to make a new settlement yet. Though, the release notes state that more than one settlement token does get spawned.
Does anyone know if blasters work against monoliths? I know other weapons might but we can't pick any up as we can't join.
One awesome thing that Love realises much better than DF did is the familiar but different places feeling. I went back through places I'd explored yesterday and thing were still persistent but had changed. An AI settlement had become devoid of life, a pass had begun to decay, a familiar mountain here, a river there, and then finally returning to see the settlement across the lake and feeling I had returned to where was safe.
It has been too long since a game evoked such feelings.
We've come up against a pretty major problem in that people seem to pick the worst places for bases (Not helped by the fact that there are at least 20 buildings before you've even got the basics.). I tested the rocket on the monolith of the first base (I now know, it only takes one hit to kill them.) as it was up on a tiny platau and way overcrowded. Someone then found a nice place on a plain. I then learned that you should not click to join a settlement while holding the rocket launcher.
Finally, someone found a tiny place by a river.. right outside a fully functional AI fortress..
While there is the sense of wonder about discovering things for the first time.. there is something to be said for not experiencing this while choosing where the base is going to stay.

I don't think that settlements are meant to always be stable or long-lasting. Part of the fun for me has been participating in a lot of different settlements with a lot of different people in a lot of different places, building them up, watching them crumble, etc. Very much a "losing is fun" mentality.
I found the rocket launcher monolith again.. I put it some way away from the base so people wouldn't accidentally destroy the settlement. Now I'm off to blow up some AI bases that've been giving me sass.
Edit: Well, that didn't work. While sneaking up in the darkness then shooting from a far island, about five enemies locked onto me the moment I fired and returned fire directly at me. I hope they fix this to allow for stealthy midnight rocket raids.
Well, in this early alpha stage, it seems trying to build is much like lego. Unfortunately it's lego with what amounts to a large group of young children who are all high on caffeine. Probably the most needed change at the moment is imposing restrictions on how close buildings can be to each other.

I'd rather they just make the landscape easier to edit than to impose any restrictions on how you can build. Perhaps a top-down editor or something of the like.
I've played every now and then. After the initial launch, there's not a lot to do until the alpha gets further along and the more of the PvP features are added.

EDIT:
*Sigh* Only $3? Fine. Now I just gotta wait for my new bank information to finish setting up with paypal.

Also: Wind turbines are so nice to look at.

It should all be ok when this comes out of alpha.
