  • his parents have objections to it because of how "racy" it is
The know that it's done in mostly puppets, right? There is no on-stage sex between any actual humans, just bits of felt.
Words and themes are just as important as physical actions, at least to a conservative. Just saying.

That sucks man. My parents did the same to me, but they stopped before I turned 17. The fact that he's legally able to watch anything he wants to, short of pornography, yet the parents want to keep control is just ridiculous. Personally, I would just go anyway and not tell them about it.

...and banish the very thought that a 17 year old should be introduced to the notion of....SEX!!

In the states, the legal age is 18.

They are just those kind of people who don't like things they consider are inappropriate, and that falls under that criteria.

That statement stands, Sail; R rated movies are 17+.

MPAA ratings are not legally binding. Not being 18 is still kind of significant.

Although, I did miss the "short of pornography" when I read the post the first time. Still, though. MPAA ratings mean nothing and his parents still have legal control over him.

That's why I said I would go and just not say anything. If he were 18, then he should go, and then tell his parents later how much he loved it (assuming he does).
  • Jesus - When I would come home late and more than a little drunk from a party when I was 17, generally, the only question would be from my father, and I quote - "D'ja Get a root?" - I find it hard to imagine not being allowed to see a racy puppet show.
  • the only question would be from my father, and I quote - "D'ja Get a root?"
Hahaha, oh man. I can't imagine a question like that from my dad, but although he was always strict, I had absurd amounts of freedom as a kid. I never had a curfew (when a teacher I disliked once asked the class, I asked if dawn counted), groundings were unheard of, and my parents pretty much stopped enforcing "No M-rated games, no R-rated movies" when I just started borrowing them from friends. When I got to college, my dad gave me advice on the car ride downstate on how to dodge hangovers.

I suppose that's why insanely strict parenting has always seem totally alien to me. A lot of my friends were victims to it, but I was given a lot of trust, and I never abused it. That's how I plan on raising my kids.

Amen to that my dear brother.
  • That's so stupid. I've seen Avenue Q and either I am a libertine with no morals, or it just wasn't that risque. I mean, someone who went to high school and heard kids talk in the halls would be subjected to far racier subject matter than two puppets getting it on and singing about it. If anything, Avenue Q has some slightly bawdy humor, but nothing a teenager can't handle.

It's amazing how quickly things change. I regularly attended R rated movies as a child, as the local theater was more interested in kids' money than they were in the opinions of their parents. But, people started getting paranoid and conservative again as I was growing up, and enforcement stepped up. End result? I went to R rated movies on my own when I was 14, but needed my parents to escort me by the time I was 17.

    Awesome.
  • At 13 I discovered that I had the power to get into any movie I wanted to because I developed fully quite early and people just assumed I was older. As much as I hated having breasts back then, I can't deny that they did have their uses.

...yea. I'm pretty much the opposite. I still look 14-18(depending who you ask), unless I don't shave.

You are not alone. I am 25, and I get carded at the sex toy store.

While I personally would not have a problem with it, I can understand parents not wanting their kids to see a blatant portrayal of sex, even if puppets are used. That scene was pretty evocative. West Side Story has as much or greater content of violence as AveQ has sex though...funny how values are different like that.

Same here. I've grown about an inch in the past four years... >.> Being asked if I'm a freshman gets old. Real quick. Still, I don't mind looking young-ish, as long as I have an ID to back me up it's never a problem.

    You'll be glad when you're 30 and look 25-ish.

I know, my dad is glad to be 50 and look 35-40. But still, it's painful now.

I'm 27 and most stores have stopped checking my ID when I buy beer. You know, those stores with the signs that say "WE CARD ANYONE WHO APPEARS TO BE YOUNGER THAN 40."

The only time I get ID'ed is when I'm downtown and the clerk thinks I'm an undercover cop.

This is closer to where I'm at. I'm only 23 and I almost never get carded for booze at grocery stores or little marts anymore. Still get carded at bars cause they have to. But even when I was in high school, I started shaving at 15, so I never got asked for ID when I went to R rated movies or bought M rated games. As it is, I hang out with a lot of people in their late 20's, and everyone assumes I'm in that age group.

Oh yeah? Well I'm 10,000 years old, and I look like a 12 year old girl.

Haven't yet. I know what it's about though; I should get on that.
