I've spent the past few days in a rut of "sit, browse internet all day, sleep." I picked up paints yesterday to get to work on minis, but my stripper of choice (Simple Green) failed on my resin models, so I'm stuck waiting for a fresh batch of models to arrive.
I'm probably going to start reading a ton tomorrow, maybe get out to cafes and the like. I don't want my break to end like this.
Seeing as I said I would do so many things in the past and they have either bore little to no fruit at all, I'm not promising anything. However I will keep the idea into consideration. I did however make an idea for a Tron fanmovie...
Yesterday, I began my canvassing of the campus looking for an open AM frequency so I can pick one and order a transmitter for my radiostation. I needed a lot of tech to get this done, so I shanghaied a shopping cart and built a trolley to make my life easier.
BEHOLD! The Sonic Kart!
A cart I threw together housing an AM receiver, my laptop, a portable car Jumper, power strip, extension cord, and my bag. Oh, and a banging set of speakers to play some tunes while I occasionally stop to charge my stuff. Most of the time, my laptop is running on battery, and the receiver is being powered by the car jumper though the cigarette lighter socket. The power strip has connected to it the charger for my laptop, the charger for the car jumper, and the speakers. When I stop to make a reading, I extend the extension cord and hook it up to the nearest outdoor outlet.
I use the AM radio which I use to search for frequencies in use. I then use my laptop to edit a map I made on google maps where I mark my current location and what stations I was able to receive. My receiver is knob controlled, so I can only know what frequency it is by the call letters I hear, which I correlate to a list of AM stations within receiving range on Radiolocator.com
It's a bit crude, but it'll help give me an idea of what frequency to use for my radio station. I'll be resuming my work tomorrow, but this time I'll bring a small inverter with me to keep the speakers powered even when I'm not connected to an outlet.
Also, I got a pretty good picture of me.
Oh! I just realized something! In addition to getting an AM map of the campus, the map also shows where working outdoor outlets are on campus and where Wifi access is available. Meta-data for the win!
Ahaha, I can just imagine what you looking like pushing that thing around. You're like a hi-tech homeless man The mounted speakers are a great touch.
$120 headphones + $900 Laptop + $40 speakers + $50 of everything else does not a hobo make. Still, when I asked this girl if she had seen any more outdoor outlets and she told me the library might let me charge up there, she said it the same way you would tell a hobo that the bakery down the street might give him some bread.
Well, I've become the semi-official roadie for my housemate's metal band. Semi official, because we're currently hunting for an enormous fuck-off axe for me to carry around for exactly the reason half of you are thinking.
Honestly, I think turntablism is a lost art for a reason.
Probably. I still know DJs who use digitables, CD decks, and the like...But I'm pretty sure most of my favorite artists build their material entirely digitally. I know VSnares uses Renoise a lot.
You should at least tinker with a real one, just in case your computer might be on the fritz and a party you needed to DJ for was coming up soon.
Computers are a lot easier to come by than DJ turntables.

This really reminds back to that conversation I had about the manual camera on a previous Geekchat. But I'd rather not get raped by Sonic and Luke again.

To be fair, you were asking for it, you shouldn't have been dressed like that in that part of town.

Instead of me deliberating and making excuses, I'll be frank. I enjoy doing it the old way very much so, but that does not mean I don't utilize or enjoy the modern and more common way of doing it. That would be silly and insane if such were the case.

Except turntablism is an instrumental discipline. It's like the difference between playing a bassoon and synthesizing a bassoon, except the bassoon will probably never be accurately synthesized...at least not in my lifetime. 10k point bonus for getting the reference.

Hey, I'm on your side - I still shoot, on occasion, with a Practica 35MM SLR that's twice as old as I am. Great fun, lovely camera, but I wouldn't use it day to day.

I'll raise you my Mamiya C220 that uses a format so outdated, that it's now imposible to find medium format (in my country at least) or get a lab that processes the film, I now have the option to order it thanks to the whole Olga/Lomo movement, but still have to develop it myself, and that sucks. Ain't she a beauty?

I'm not that bad, for exactly that reason - I couldn't be bothered.
I'm not that kind of DJ. I have my music and music video library on my computer and I use Virtual DJ to help me play them in an entertaining fashion. I don't do scratching.
And yes, I do own a turntable and several records.

...Promise us you will make this movie, Matt.

Catchy. Mount some tables and a mixer on there and you'll have a real party cart.
I should seriously start investing in DJ gear. I have no doubts that I could do that, even if it took a while.

2) Corrupting the souls of the pure
3) Playing dice with the fate of humanity
4) Macrame
