It all depends on what you can see. If I can see a better spot, I'll move. Usually the game just puts me in the best spot to begin with. Sometimes I'll move one hex and settle to get coast/not-coast.

After some issues are smoothed out, I could link a mod me and a buddy have made for this that might perk your interest for future Civ games. It enacts a very simple late-game change; Archeology is renamed "Nationalism" and, in addition to the other benefits, unlocks a National Wonder called National Anthem, which way accelerates your border growth. In other words, just as you enter the resource-intensive Industrial Age, resources nearby active civs get locked right the fuck down and neighboring civs have their borders mash right up against each other in short order, making fighting stupid wars over coal and oil more important as busting out the late game settlers is much less of an option.
