If you are willing to put up with a newb (haven't played a Civil game since Civil 3, but got Civ 5 + expansions recently for almost nothing)., I'm in. If not, I understand.
Thinking about playing a game of Civ V either this evening or tomorrow evening.
Only people with the expansions (Brave New World). We should do a Google Hangout at the same time. Play at least 4ish hours, and save the game in case we want to continue it.
I'm exploring setting up a Pit Boss server, but it appears you can't run a game normally and then convert it to a pitboss game. I need to test a little.
I'd be down to a game but I am visiting family today so I can catch next game.

Oh, I am. It'll be a casual game anyway. I'm sort of testing how well this works with the idea of some time later in the year starting a long term friends only semi-serious game with pitboss.
Hmmm... I'm thinking 7:30pm. I'll start a Google Hangout and a regular (not pitboss) game. Super casual, so 100% newbs welcome. We'll hang out and play Civ. If anyone has to leave: fine - the AI will take over for you. We'll see where we get to before everyone's bored.
If ScoJo joins, don't trust him.
If anyone plays Shaka Zulu, take that person out hard and fast. ;^)

So, running a dedicated Pitboss server on Amazon is not feasible for incredibly stupid reasons. I might be able to run a dedicated one on our htpc, but I need to test that.
This week, I'll need 2-3 volunteers to help me test pitboss.
Basically, I'll start a game, you'll join it, and we'll play the first 20-30 turns or so. Then we'll see what happens if one person quits, and confirm that the turn notifications work.
If that's all good, then I'll bring the server down, then back up, and see if everyone can reconnect.
If it all goes well, then we can play a BIG game of Civ in the nearing future.
The plan for the real game is that we'd schedule a time to play the first 100-200 turns (right up until the game starts to slow down) live, and then we play per our turn notifications after that. The server would be up much of the time, but occasionally down, as I'd likely be running it on my main PC for performance reasons.
Basically, we can play live like a normal MP game if everyone's logged in. If someone isn't, then we'll get Steam notifications when it's our turn.
If it really is notification based, I can play. But I haven't played Civ anything in over a year, so I will suck balls. But maybe with tons of time to take each turn, I can unsuck.
One thing I've thought about to help with play by e-mail Civ games is a combat simulator. I have a Horseman on a plains attacking a Spearman on a Hills. Both are full health and everything. What is the most likely outcome if I attack? If I can calculate this off to the side in another program, I can make some pretty good decisions in the real game where you've got no undos.
Civ V gives you a full combat expected results for every possible combat action already. It tells you exactly how much health both units will have after the fight, and even tells you what factors mattered.
If I can take my time and hopefully not suck then I might be interested more in participating. I've only played a couple times and then trying to play real time with a buddy of mine was just kinda frustrating.

Unless there's something I don't know about it won't tell you that unless you go to war. A lot of times this would help me to decide whether to go to war.
Is there some way to watch, without playing? I don't particularly want to play civ, but I do want to see all you lot nuking the shit out of each other.
This weekend I'll assemble whoever's available, probably Saturday evening, to do a pitboss test.
Everyone who's interested in a big game, especially if you're a newbie to Civ V, just make sure you have all the expansions, and play a game or two on a Small world with continents to get the mechanics really down.

The war-ish ones aren't as fun, because I feel obligated to use their power. Like, if I'm Japan, and I have an army, why would I put it to waste?
My steam account is, if you didn't know, Rym. ;^)
If people are interested in doing this for real, We'll schedule a set of people well in advance for some other day.
