  • 24-Hour LeMons
My friend and I were going to do LeMons for a while, and we had a team, but our schedules conflicted with the Chicago dates too much.

Generally, I like the idea of the 2904 more, just because it is bigger, badder, faster, and extremely fucking illegal.
  • So the WRX I wanted to drive was on an extended test drive for the evening. I ended up test driving a new VW GTI instead and damn is that a nice car.
  • I've heard nice things about the GTI.
  • My buddy chipped his and put some huge fucking sway bars on it. That car is a monster. I'd love to have one.
  • updated list:
    VW GTI *really like
    FIAT 500
    Subaru WRX
    Ford Focus
    Ford Fiesta
    VW Beetle
    Hyundai Genesis Coupe
    Chevy Cruze
    Honda Fit
    Honda CRZ
    Mini Cooper
    Mazdaspeed 3
    Mazda 2?
So there's the list as it stands, I'm gonna test drive the Mazdas tonight.
  • VWs? WRXs? For Sissies. This is how a real man gets about.

  • Man, the only other car I'm really interested in after the GTI is the WRX, but fuck me on finding one of those.

  • Does the girl come with the truck?
  • So I was sure about getting rid of my miata a few days ago. Now, I'm very unsure. Logically I makes no sense to keep it. But when it's dry out it's so much fun.

Can you swap tires to get a bit more grip without compromising how it handles otherwise?

Also, what year is it? If you do decide to get rid of it, and you're not trading it, could you let me know? As I've mentioned earlier, I've got a friend in the market for a Miata, and I don't think he'd have an issue flying out to get it.
  • Without tearing the engine open is there any wat to find out when a used vehicle last had it's timing belt replaced? An online database? Carfax?

I plan on getting it done asap for the used car I bought but I lack the funds to do it right now.

Just give it an eyeball, they're on the outside, and we can propably tell you where if we know what car. If it looks super shitty, missing teeth, all busted up, change it. Otherwise, you should be fine - you only have to do them every hundred and a half thousand kilometers or so.

Edit- About 80 thousand miles or so.

    It's a 2010 GT.

OK so the cases for both cars.

    Miata

    Cons

    • hard ride
    • I don't fit well
    • worthless trunk
    • noisy interior, especially at highway speed
    • can't put it's power down in the wet

    Pros

    • fantastic to drive in the dry on a nice back road
    • convertible

    GTI

    Cons

    • Not quite as good a drive on a curvy back road as the miata

    Pros

    • good ride
    • I fit well
    • useful trunk and even a back seat for extra people or folds flat for extra storage
    • quiet interior, except for awesome engine noise when you step on it
    • can put it's power down in the wet and doesn't try to kill you
  • Telling you, man, throw some massive sway bars on a GTI and you'll eliminate that con. That car can definitely handle corners at high speeds after some light tuning.

Also, your cons to the Miata, as it stands, far outstrip the cons of a stock GTI.

Logically yes, but the thrill and excitement and driving a race car at a clip are an adrenaline rush I can't ignore.
  • It's a 98 Neon. I just fixed he instrument cluster so I know the mileage is off by a bit. (early Neons are known for a bad solder on the circuit board behind the instrument cluster that causes he speedometer to malfunction and stop working.)

Well, in that case, if it's over a hundred grand, keep an eye on it, but you don't need to worry TOO much, just plan ahead to get it done and start squirreling cash away for that time. If it isn't broke or causing trouble, no need to fix it immediately, just prepare to fix it when you can.
  • I put money down on a GTI. They have to source the car I want from another dealership.
  • Ok guys, I need your help. My car club is doing a white elephant gift exchange this Wednesday and I need to get something. $10-$20 range. Suggestions?
  • The both of you are horrible.

A Haynes manual of their car? Maybe a good coffee table book of classic cars?

    That's a really good idea. ^_^
  • Serpentine belt just slipped off my explorer while I was driving on the highway. Lost power steering but I was able to pull off. Any suggestions? I just called AAA and a local truck shop is taking a look.

Put the belt back on if it isn't ruined. Make sure the tensioner isn't screwed.
