Every time I've clicked on a a link to reddit, I've never worked out what to do next, or even where to start reading on the page that I land. In my life I've spent maybe 10 minutes on there, max. What's the big appeal? Do you just have a lot of time to fill?
SquadronROE pretty much hit it on the head, if I have a minute to fill, reddit is brimming with quick bites of content to keep you amused for extremely short periods. It helps that I have Reddit Enhancement Suite, which enables me to consume a vast amount of reddit content in a very short time, as well as a bunch of other useful customization.
There is also a lot of longer, denser content you can get into if you have a little more time, and for all it's faults, it is quite an excellent collection point for a vast amount of news and media - that's why I browse my local subreddits, it's often a pretty thick collection of things which I'd have to spend ten times as much effort and time to find on my own, and a lot of it happens to be local news and events.
As for what to do next, link at the very top takes you to the content, below is the discussion, with comment threads, which are often able to be safely ignored.
When Reddit first existed, I thought it was just a bad Digg copycat, so I ignored it. But then I realized that the magic of Reddit is the subreddit. You can ignore all that Ron Paul crap because it's only in /r/politics. Just subscribe to the reddits you care about, and all is well. I started with /r/programming and /r/python. Now I've added /r/mylittlepony and /r/snsd.
My superhero ponies are doing okay on DA, but they have a surprising number of naughty fans. I keep having to decline the Friendship is Erotic group and had to block my first creeper on Deviant Art. Does my stuff even look naughty?!

Spot who hasn't been on reddit for a while...
Okay, I kid, but seriously, Ron Paul spam is a problem on reddit. I've even seen it in the subreddits for other nations, my local subreddit, /r/baseball, /r/trees(they don't like him as much as you'd think), /r/comedy, it's all over the fucking place. Since Ron's reddit fan club will basically use any excuse to evangelize, and they've got their own little downvote brigade, too - doesn't matter where you say it, you've got a decent chance of getting swarmed.

The best whisky is scotch. Specifically Islay scotches. I recommend Lagavulin 16 - it tastes like you're sucking on a burning log that is also covered in peat moss.

I never told you-- I finally had this for the first time on Christmas Eve. I can verify the accuracy of this description. It's my favorite scotch. Though I wouldn't say the best whiskey is Scotch. They all have their merits, save Canadian. Fuck Canadian Whiskey.
@Anrild: If you're looking for a decently priced, good whiskey, get a bottle of Knob Creek. Use it in an Old Fashioned, or serve it over ice or with a splash of water.
I'm all about Bloody Larrys. Rim a pint glass with Old Bay seasoning. Use a good bourbon like Knob Creek in place of vodka. Make a skewer with a hunk of pickle, a chunk of excellent cheddar, and a big fuckin' olive. Dash of liquid smoke in the drink just before serving, and a can of PBR as a back.

On second thought, let's not go to Reddit. It is a silly place.

Bliss.
Also fucking amazing - instead of pickle brine in your Bloody Mary, try the brine from a jar of jalapenos. Bring spare pants.
