  • So I now have too many devices to charge via USB and it has become unwieldy. I need some sort of USB strip with a ton of ports so I can charge all the things without a mess of wires and such.

The problem is that some devices, especially iPad, require "high-power" USB. An iPad will literally refuse to charge if it isn't getting enough juice from the USB port.

It's easy to find tons of USB power strips and hubs on Amazon or Newegg. But even the ones that have power supplies don't seem to actually provide full power on all ports. One I saw only provided power on one port when the computer is asleep. I want full power on many many ports even when my computer is completely shut down. Even those that are powered don't seem to have any guarantee that they are powered enough to charge an iPad.

I want enough power to charge an iPad on every single port simultaneously. I need at least 8 ports. Does this exist?
  • 3.1A is the highest I've seen for USB based devices but it's usually 2.1A
2.1A x 8 ports is 16.8 amps input at 5v = 84 Watts, which is more power than some laptop chargers.

Try looking for a hub with one or two designated iPad or 2.1/3.1A ports.
  • 84 watts is a fraction of a PC's PSU.

I've found some hubs that do have one designated port that is capable of charging an iPad. The problem is that none of the other ports charge at all. At this point I'll be happy with something that has 1 2.1A port and 3 or 4 regular ones. They just all have to provide sufficient power for charging simultaneously without being connected to a computer, just the wall socket.

This one seems to have mixed reviews regarding data flow but as purely a USB charger it would seem to work.

I know there are Gigabyte motherboards which have certain USB ports that charged high amp devices while the computer is off, however obviously not the best choice unless you're building a new computer.
  • Comments say it's not enough power to run 3 HDDs which doesn't bode well.

Yeah I was looking at it as more of a charge station. I don't know if Scott uses self powered USB external hard drives or drives which run directly off the port. (I personally buy the ones which have a separate power supply or connect them to my machine directly).

It seems quite expensive for a hub.
  • This seems to be the best out there as of now.

  • Can I go ahead and use my D: partition for storage if they is fuckall on it? That is literally half my HDD space I am not using for some depressingly inexplicable reason.
  • That charger is apparently 5 A, so you can use three of the ports at once (It would need 6 A to run everything.).

Isn't that what people usually put their D: partitions there for?
  • I cleaned out my computer when I installed my SSD and I now have one of my 1TB drives doing pretty much nothing.

    Yeah

I use the D: for game backups, ripping DVD's and being the receiving drive for torrents

  • Okay, since I can't say that I am a master of the english language, someone tell me: Is "of" actually correct in sentences like "Would X of won if Y" or are these people morons with a hearing problem?
  • These people are morons, though I'm not sure that I'd say that they necessarily have hearing problems.
  • That's so wrong it's painful.

It's a dialect of English, commonly referred to as illiterate.

It's a bastardization of "would've" or "could've." The "'ve" part is pronounced a lot like "of," and if people aren't used to seeing it written...

    It is egregiously incorrect.
  • I know that it's supposed to be "would've", and it also really bothers me because I am so aware of this maybe exactly because english is a language I learned, rather than being born into the assumption that I'm doing things correctly. I also find it egregious but since it isn't my first language I wanted to make sure it's them being idiots, rather than me being ignorant.
  • Definitely idiots. Correct vehemently.
  • Either "X would've..." or "would X have..." but those are different uses. One suggests being interrogative while the other is declarative.
  • There right, actually.
